The big reveal: Maura might have been pregnant.

***Exclusive***

I can now report that forensics on Maura Murray's computer at UMass revealed searches for websites related to pregnancy which were conducted just prior to her searches for lodging in the Stowe, Vermont area. She was specifically searching for material relating to the effects of excessive drinking on an unborn fetus, according to those familiar with the investigation.

In Feb, 2004, Maura was not in a good place. She'd been shown the door at West Point. Had reason to believe her boyfriend was unfaithful. Had just wrecked her father's car. And apparently suspected she could be pregnant. She sent an email to professors, in which she lied and said she would be missing classes due to a death in the family. Then, she packed her things and headed into the mountains.

Regardless of what happened next, there is no doubt in my mind Maura was running away. Even if it was only long enough to think through her troubles.

**UPDATE**
I may have been unclear in the post above. There were several searches about pregnancy conducted from Maura's computer that strongly suggested to investigators that Maura was either pregnant or thought she could be. The searches did not relate to any possible homework.

  1. Maura was with Billy in the fall of 2003. Otherwise the next time she saw him was over the Christmas holiday. If you do the math, she'd have been close to 5 months along or else closer to 2 full months. Guessing. There is a video we've all likely seen where Maura is kind of snickering as Billy lays on the floor or couch right by her. She looks a bit heavier there than the early photos in NY. It makes sense now why she would say there was a death in the family. She may have been trying to tell Billy this the night she just had to go see her dad. Oh boy.

  2. Also, I cannot see her running very far on her own in such condition. She'd suffered a ham string injury and that held her back too. There was a person running down the road about 5 miles away. I'll bet a nickle it wasn't Maura. There was some guy in town, wherever that was who matched that discription too, hooded sweatshirt, acting suspicious....but he had a goatee.
Either way, somebody saw a red truck up the road, and some kind of noises or movement in the bushes. I'm guessing that if Maura bought all that booze, it was going to help her get through any proceedure. Or, maybe she bought it as a distaraction so if it ever came out, people would not think she kept the baby. I think she could have ran away too with the one from her school who had moved on. Why would he move on mid course? Now people might want to be looking for a family, or at least Maura and a child.

  3. Also, can you elaborate a tiny bit on Maura being shown the door at West Point?

    1. Apparently she got caught for credit card fraud. I believe she stole numbers off somebody's credit card and used it. I believe that is what I read.

  4. She could very easily be a stay at home mom?

  5. Maybe she was leaving to get an abortion? Or hoping excessive drinking may cause a miscarriage? Or hoping that it wouldn't and leaving before she started "showing," worried what others may think?

  6. Oh for Christ's sake. Maura was a NURSING STUDENT. There's more than a very good chance those searches were academic in nature. One of my closest friends spends more than 40 hours a week researching the effects of excessive alcohol on fetuses--that's what she studies for a living. A current search of my computer would reveal exactly the same results as Maura's, because I was helping this friend update her CV and we were proofing publication dates on research articles.

This is not only sloppy journalism, it's ugly sensationalism. Computer searches for fetal alcohol syndrome by a nursing student DO NOT indicate a likely pregnancy.

    1. THANK YOU!! I am amazed at the number of people who make these gigantic leaps to conclusion without even looking for an obvious reason.

  7. omg! wow! so the big question is :WHO WAS THE FATHER OF THE POSSIBLE CHILD? do you know if Fred knew about this or Billy know?

  8. I'm sure it would be easy enough for someone to determine if the searches were schol related or not and from the sounds of it they were not. T.

  9. I am so glad you are doing this blog. I have followed Maura's case for years and have always been very puzzled/uncomfortable with the "family machine" surrounding any and all conversations about Maura and the case. There is a story there, I don't know what it is, but there is something not right about it. Some people are VERY invested in Maura's image as an "All-American girl" that they shut down any conversations suggesting that she fell short of being a saint. In reality, what was going on in Maura's life is the key to solving this case.

Keep on it, Mr. Renner. This story, the whole story, deserves to be told.

  10. They found her birth control pills in the car...why would she even bring them if she was already pregnant?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I've thought about that too. There's a lot we don't know about Maura, still. Could she have brought it along out of habit? Was she no longer pregnant?

    1. So I'm REALLY late to this (I just started researching Maura's case this weekend) and heard about the suspected pregnancy and wanted to find out where those claims came from. Thanks for the info. As far as birth control pills in her car, I have a couple theories---

      a) They were previously in there and she just never removed them. Maybe she had not been taking them in quite some time, but still had them. Also, birth control is not 100% effective (though close), and if not taken correctly pregnancy can happen. Even if she was on BC, when you have a lot of stress in your life you're more likely to accidentally skip pills, causing an accidental pregnancy.

      b) Maura either knew she was pregnant or suspected she was pregnant. We don't know the last time she had sex. Say it was 2 days prior, and she had unprotected sex. Obviously you wouldn't know if you were pregnant yet, as the sperm and egg may not have even implanted yet. Often, women will take higher does of birth control in the day following unprotected sex. All the PlanB pill is (which is the pill you can take after unprotected sex) is a heavy dose of birth control. As a nursing student she may have known this, and brought birth control pills with her to double up on the dose in the coming days to try to prevent implantation. The searches could be curiosity-searches...(ie: "If I *am* pregnant would the alcohol I've been drinking cause an issue this early on if I decide to keep the baby). Maybe she was planning on doing some soul-searching and decision making in the upcoming days as to what to do.

      c) Using high-doses of alcohol to attempt an early abortion, though the chances of that being successful wouldn't be too great...

  12. Regular birth control pills can be used as emergency contraception (aka Plan B)--you have to take many at once depending on the brand, something like 10 pills. This is something you use after you have a birth control failure, and I believe the ideal time is within 72 hours. Emergency contraception can cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, etc.

I do not think bc pills can be used as an abortion pill, so if she was already pregnant and not merely worried she might me after a very recent birth control failure, then she would know they wouldn't work like that.

Also, many women take birth control pills for non-bc reasons, or as a adjunct to the contraceptive purpose, like remaining regular or for acne. I think you are supposed to stop taking them once you are pregnant, although I don't think they work to induce a miscarriage.

I would like to know if the pills were the most recent month's prescription, and where were they found.

  13. I see Maura as having guilt over something which was causing her to use alcohol to numb herself. If indeed she was promiscuous, could she have been sexually abused as a child? Using drugs and having an unhealthy number of sexual partners,is often a sign that someone suffered abuse as a child, and is suffering greatly from that trauma. It could also explain the family's reluctance to uncover the secrets of Maura's life.
It's also possible Maura had already had an abortion, and felt tremendous guilt over it. Perhaps her computer search was a way to alleviate some of the that guilt by reassuring herself that the baby would not have been healthy. That could also explain why she took her birth control pills with her. Or maybe she was on her way to have the abortion, and she took her pills with her because a person facing surgery is supposed to bring all prescribed medication to show the DR. Maybe that's why she took that money out of her bank account.
I also believe it's possible that Maura was modeling some of her mother's behavior, and she could have felt guilt about that as well. She surely would have recognized where she was headed with her alcohol consumption, and she would probably have felt a great deal of pain over her actions. Maybe she needed to ask her father for help, but didn't know how. Maybe she went to see him in the middle of the night when she had been drinking as a way to let him see the problem she may have with alcohol without having to voice it herself.
These are all just possibilities, and in no way is it my intention to hurt Maura's family, or harm her reputation. Clearly Maura was having a crisis over something in her life. That does not make her a bad person, or tarnish her accomplishments. It just makes her human. She seems like a wonderful young woman who just became confused for a brief period in her life, which happens a lot at her age. I don't think anyone should make judgments about her character based on any mistakes she might have made at a young age while in college. It's just tragic that she may have lost her life while trying to figure it all out.

  14. This conjecture is ridiculous....Maura died somewhere in the woods. Her body will eventually be found.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If that were the case wouldn't her body be found by now?

      Delete
    2. Just Google Earth around that area, the woods go on and on,I believe she is out there too,but it would take alot more searching or just plain ol'good luck to find her body.

      Delete
    3. No. It's not as easy to find a body in a dense forest like that as people like to think. Especially after animals scatter the remains. I agree that the most like scenario is that she wandered into the woods and froze to death.

  15. She was abducted, it's pretty much common sense . Has anyone looked at that bus driver who was the last person to speak to her?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm fairly certain the police would have looked at the bus driver. They don't usually hire morons.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I find this idea very plausible. She became pregnant from another man at UMass, and would not have wanted Billy and/or her family to find out. She heads out of town so hastily to find an abortion clinic... All speculation of course.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Personally the fact that the bus driver appears to be in his 60's and placed himself into the investigation seems relevant to me. Also, I do think it's possible on the whole "Maura might have been pregnant situation", but I don't imagine it would have been a big upset the way you people on here are presenting it. I bet she rented the cabins, and wanted her boyfriend to come up and stay with her once she was there, so that she could tell him the big news, but she never made it. That's my speculation. I don't think her father or the boyfriend would ever have failed to support her regardless.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The fact that she kept drinking after presumably finding out she was pregnant--and researching the risks to the fetus of drinking--indicates that she intended to abort the baby. Maybe she took the trip in order to have an abortion more secretly. She might not have wanted to go to a local clinic or hospital because of the risk of encountering someone she knew. Obviously she knew a lot of people in the local medical community.

Or maybe she took the trip in order to be with her boyfriend while she had the abortion...abortion can be emotionally rough for women and she might have wanted his support. Also, if she planned to stay with him a few days after she had the abortion, that might explain why she brought birth control pills.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Most abortion clinics dont let you go alone. She would have had to bring someone with her to drive her home. This is what I think happened. I live in Maine and there are plenty of weirdos here who would have their way with someone and dispose of them if they thought they could get away with it. Someone saw her when she was leaving the scene of the accident and she took the first ride she could find to get away to avoid being caught for drunk driving. She called Billy with her calling card to try to get him to call someone to help her but he didn't answer and her captor must have walked into wherever she was being held so she couldn't say anything. This is a tragic mystery and I hope for the family she is found so she can have a proper burial. Birth control takes one month to kick in after having an abortion so I believe she wasn't pregnant and just troubled and struggling with drinking. When we are her age we tend to think the world revloves around us and when things go wrong we have a rough time coping. If she had some mysterious boyfriend he would have come forward after her dissapearance. Its hard to say why she was up there but I don't believe it was for an abortion I think it was just to get away.

  21. Anonymous.

I truly feel for mauras family, her father truly seems tormented with her absence. The police I feel dropped the ball here. Pregnant or not she was taken period, the rest is not important. Finding her and who ever took her is the focus. Also there has been a staggering number of missing women especially around 2004-2007 I think a serial killer is active and very competent at hiding his victims. All the girls I have researched have vanished, which tells me whoever took them knew exactly how and what to do. I feel Maura was a chance encounter, but by someone with knowledge of what he was doing or she would have been located most criminals are beyond stupid, and compulsive which causes huge mistakes in leaving evidence. Serial killers usually have more control even if the act is on an impulse. It's hard to say what she was researching on her computer, I'm a nurse, and during school my computer would have been packed with medical info depending on what rotation I was doing, pediatrics, obstetrics ect. The police need to treat this as if their own child has been taken, and get their heads out of their asses. I pray for Maura often, I have two daughters I can't imagine her family's pain.

  22. I've seen the episode of "Missing" about Maura again today on Netflix. What a very sad story and how very sad that this case has not been solved by finding her remains or finding her alive. Whomever is responsible for this should burn in hell for the pain and heartache caused to this young woman and her family and friends. I pray for closure for them all.

  23. I saw this case ahwile ago on an unsolved NH show or something. For some reason, maybe becasue I live in NH or I have a daughter thats going to be going to college in a couple years but it just hit me to to the core of my soul, I listened to her dad, I read all the events leading up to her disappearing, WTF was she doing? I have read everyones comments, All plossible I guess but I cant help but wanna cry everytime I think of her. She was young, beautiful and what of Ive read and seen just an amazing young lady. I worry about my daughter a lot and when I preach to her it's this kinda of thing that I worry about. As a Dad of a daughter who is aproaching her age, My heart goes out to her father, friends and family. I have seen lots of stories like this on tv but this one really hit home and broke my heart :(. I pray she is found alive and something happened where she got relocated or something. btw I have never wrote on a blog before that tells you how much this case has messed with my head and heart.

  24. as i have always said when the police said she lied about a death in her family they may have been wrong. it is my belief that her affair with u mass track coach left her pregnant . i believe contrary to her religious beleifs she was struggling with the choice of abortion which would bring her to burlington VT. after afew days of solitude and some drinking, she would make her decision, if she chose to have one then infact there would be a death in the family . then back to new hampshire to gather her thoughts. its no mystery she liked her drink . i had a friend help search the data base of womens wellness and planned parenthood for her name. my female friend said she could not by policy confirm nor deny any visits by maura much less anyone else. she did tell me that often an aka may be used, also said to look elsewhere . so i think she was telling me no dice on the search.? that infact would dismiss her as a liar as the N.H state police have portrayed her as. as running from D.W.I as scarznia suggested , he is most probably correct living 30 miles north in vermont in a glass house i wont throw any stones i will say its a vermont sportand family tradition in many cases as long as it a one car accident. i think she may have fled to the woods whenever a car would come by common tactic in police dodging . or take a ride to get gone . say to p&h truck stop . check it out Exit 17 I 91 she may have filled her gas there prior to heading to N.H which would explain her full tank i searched thousands of hours in swiftwater P7H and a lot of surrounding forrest . I also checked karme choling in barnet V.T a kinda hagout for tavelers i did see a girl that shared some physical features as maura i will keep looking as i promised. i just wish fred was alittle more receptive to help. and the police .

  25. The "death in the family" thing might be relating to an abortion. Continued use of birth control pills can cause a miscarriage. maybe thats why she brought them along, so she could keep taking them. The alleged voicemail billy got that sounded like her sobbing, could have been maura, trying to figure out what to say to him? yes the searches could have been school related, but if she was a nursing student, i'm sure they would have found other medical related searches and could have ruled it as "homework related". If she was in school specifically for pediatric nursing, neonatal, obgyn type nursing, then that would be a different story and I would assume that finding those searches would be normal for her. I am assuming she was in school for a more general type of nursing, and the only searches found were relating to pregnancy and alcohol, which leads me to believe this is somehow related to her disappearance. Maybe she ended up committing suicide. Maybe there was a botched abortion in which something went wrong and someone is covering it up.. who knows? Maybe she was abducted.

I read on wikipedia (lol..) that there was an A-frame house near the accident scene, that was searched with cadaver dogs, and a closet in the house made the dogs go crazy. does anyone know what happened with that?

  26. Point of interest, there's a late term abortion clinic in Burlington Vermont. Any pregnancy around 3 months would need to be sent there instead of a regular clinic. The only other one in that area is in NY. At 3 months she wouldn't be showing.

Could mean something, could mean nothing. I personally think she fled the scene to avoid a DUI and died from exposure.
