Who lived in New City, NY *2 UPDATES*

What you see here is a screen cap from the episode of Disappeared that showcases Maura's case. It's a quick shot of Maura's cell phone bill (which was paid by Bill Rausch's family). Some late calls to a number in New City, NY in the days leading up to her disappearance.

Anyone have a clue?

**UPDATE**
Several readers have pointed out that New City, NY is not far from West Point. So, it's possible it could be a classmate, her sister, Julie, or even Billy. Though if they're on the same plan, I'm assuming that would be apparent.

**UPDATE 2**
Some readers have pointed out the 3:40 am phone call Maura made the day she broke down at work. That appears to be a call to the Domino's in Hadley, which is open till 4 a.m.

  1. No clue, but why not get the exchange(s) for New City and then you already have the last four digits. couldn't you find out who the number was listed to? New City is not far from where I grew up, it's a nice surburb, wealthy, I wonder if the person she might have been meeting was from there, and they were going to start a life somewhere else. That area is not exactly rural and far different than anywhere in New Hampshire or Massachusetts where she was used to living. She'd still be running if she were alive, we know that. I wonder...

  2. I think it maybe boyfriend BR, not sure but notice the little black phone icon next to the number possibly indicating another cell phone, or a cell phone on the same plan . Just a guess that they possibly got the phones/plan while attending WP.

  3. Doubtful it was Billy or her sister @ West Point, I think they had already graduated. Billy was @ Ft. Sill, I think.

  4. Notice she called someone from Amherst at 340 pm on friday night? Isnt that the night she broke down in tears? 340ams late to be calling someone

  5. I am a service member and I live in Florida but have a number tied to California. I would say that is BR's number she is calling.

  6. She really wanted to talk to the person in New York. It looks like the first 2 calls were where she got voicemail probably (only 1 minute long) 9:09 and 9:55. Then she finally talked to them for 7 minutes at 12:07 AM.

  7. 10956 New City NY is over 30 minutes away from West Point....

  8. I am not certain how cell phone billing works, but I am reasonably certain that a USMA student would not list out in New City.

New City is a dozen miles away and in a different town and different county than West Point.

Of course, in one's comings and going from the West Point area , one could strike up an acquaintance with someone from New City.

  9. Was anyone else dismissed from West Point (even maybe an instructor) at the same time Maura was?

  10. Also, the call that upset her appears to be the 7 minute call to New City at 12:07 AM

  11. people keep their cellphones and it's no big wonder if someone with a NY cellphone coulsd be linivg in Texas for example.

  12. If I recall the numbers correctly, in addition to Domino's Pizza being:

    413-256-8911

and seeming a likely phone call, there is also a personal injury/criminal law attorney with this number in Amherst:

    413-253-8911

  13. Arrow Pharmacy & Nutrition Ctr
    (413)568-8911

I haven't found out if this was a 24-hour pharmacy, but it's not toooo far south of Amherst. Another possibility, altho I still think pizza for a college student makes more sense.

  14. Ludlow Auto Body
    (413) 547-8911
    121 West Ave
    Ludlow, Massachusetts 01056

Again, same partial phone number and Ludlow isn't too far east/southeast of Hadley.

The thing is... what could you get other than an answering machine at most of these businesses at around 4AM?

  15. Also there's a therapist in Amherst (and also VT) with another similar partial phone #:

    KATHRYN A. STANNARD, LICSW, CAS
Solar Hill Mansion at 229 Western Ave , Brattleboro, VT , 05301 * 26 South Prospect Street, Amherst, MA, 01002

  17. I also picked out of episode 2/5 calls to springfield Mass (6927) Albany (NY) (7147) and Lawton (1261) which is Ok and same town as fort sill. I can't piece together the dates and times.

  18. People, get a grip. That town is a stone's throw away from West Point. Service members cannot change their phone plans everytime they move. It is not unthinkable to get a phone plan from a place outside of your own town. West Point is a small town and who knows, they may not have a cell phone outlet to even get a phone there. I would say 100% that is BR's number.

  19. I can't imagine she would order a pizza, to be delivered, I assume, twenty minutes before close time. I agree with Anonymous@4:47 a.m. that knowing who was working there at that time may be beneficial.

  20. About the lateness of calls, it was stated on the old maura site that Maura was by no means an-early-to-bed-early-to-rise person. She was(one hopes is) a night owl and she and her friends/family would often call each other at what to many of us would be an ungodly hour.

  21. If the 12:07 (New city) call was the upsetting call and the new city number is BR then he knows more than he is saying. I don't remember hearing that he talked to her that evening.

  22. Look back that the June entry titled 'The Phone Call.' There Karen Mayotte is quoted as saying that she received a report of Maura being upset around 10:30 that night (2/5). Based on this I expect that the troubling news was given to her in the 10:10 call - assuming that the bad news was provided via her cell phone.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Guys, Gals, remember in this blog, the supervisor Karen Mayotte came back and corrected herself. She was notified by other supervisors that maura was upset and it was around 1 a.m. She went to Maura's dorm (That maura was working security desk) and signed Maura out of her shift at aprox 1:15 a.m. and walked maura back to her dorm. The 10:10 phone call to (Hanson mass) was Maura's sister kathleen. when the supervisor approached Maura at her security desk, Maura was not on any phone at the time.

  24. Thank you 11/23 2pm, I missed that post. I had read many other posts and articles that talked about a 1am call that was upsetting to Maura. Wow, Just when I thought I had a grasp on the details. Interesting that no detectives interviewed Karen Mayotte.

  25. BR was not at West Point at that time. He was stationed in Oklahoma.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Florida- if you're at the USMA (West Point,) and needed a cell phone, you would more than likely go to the PX on post to get your cell phone... They have all carriers and a large kiosk in the PX Mall. The readers are not too far off in saying that New City is too far away to get a phone... Especially if you're on restriction your first year. But who's to say thisis a student?

  27. Although BR was at Westpoint he could have had the same cellphone and number in OK, so it would show up as New City NY on the Bill.Anyone have any feedback as to if Cell Bills work that way? I did however post previous that I was able to pick out a call to Lawton OK where Billy was stationed with last digits of 1261.

Mr Renner, Any communications With His Mom? Is she willing to talk to you about the phone Bill?

    ReplyDelete
  28. That does not mean he has a number tied to New York. I have told you before. I live in Florida and my number is out of Chula Vista, CA.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Since Maura and Billy shared a cell phone plan, how are we even sure this is her portion of the bill?

    ReplyDelete
  30. The 3:56am phone call, COULD be, besides Dominos Pizza (see above posts), to a therapist, a personal injury/criminal law atty, (who has now branched out), as well as the following businesses which are out of town: a pharmacy (NOT a 24-hour open store today), an auto body shop, etc.

Although these could be investigated, they are JUST PARTIAL MATCHING PHONE NUMBERS, and possibly not associated at all with Maura. They're just there to be checked out!

Maybe, as a poster above asked, there was someone working at Domino's Pizza that Maura knew?

A poster months or years ago suggested Maura might have known someone who worked at the Fretted Instrument in Amherst.... dunno anything about that...

Hi, Just me here. I can answer this one, lol, part of my rocket scientist training.....

We think we know because Maura did call her sister Kathleen at her future husbands, parents, phone number. (yes, Kathleen was living with her boyfriend at his parents house and that's where Maura placed the call to_thehome landline. That call took place about 10 after 10 and lasted about 20 or so minutes.I had all 10 didgets on several phone numbers at one time. One of my pc's
has been borrowed out, but I'll go over and see. Naturally, I will only mail this info to you James

  32. With reference to the comment of 11/23 @ 8:00 pm, I am curious about this too, on broader terms. I really liked the sensible methodology that you laid out Mr. Renner. But posting this bill - assuming that you could not have authenticated it yourself - seems to not be consistent with your approach? Am I wrong? Not that it matters too much, but your methodology seemed like a healthy one that would avoid red herrings and wasted time, in favor of methodical accumulation of verified facts. Would be curious how this bill/screen shot from a television program fits in with that. Regards ~ John Green

  33. Mr Renner, Can Karen Mayotte specify the time that the reporting supervisor realized Maura was upset?
Mayotte was told about Maura's state while the area supervisors were meeting at an eatery. Enough time may have elapsed between the reporting supervisor realizing Maura's state and Mayotte signing her out that the upsetting news may have been given prior to the 12:07 call.

  34. Looks like there were several evening calls to a phone number ending in 9411 in Amherst. Here's one, but it seems to late for a friend to be working (7PM and 8:40PM). All these years later phone numbers have come and gone -- oh, well:

  35. John,

I'm posting the bill as a way to generate new leads.

  36. It finally occurred to me that LE has Maura's cellphone records and can obviously get a "Detail" that would show who she called. If the calls aren't relevant to her disappearance, I sure wish LE would say so! If it was a friend or an Amherst cousin, wouldn't LE have investigated the relationship and that person's whereabouts when Maura left Amherst?

  37. After much investigating, I believe the New City number is (and has been for quite some time, caching back web sites) owned by Sprint. The two phones printed on the bill means she was calling someone else who has the Sprint service, not necessarily someone on the same plan or bill. Going to try to find out who owns the number now, just in case.

  38. James, Okay, that makes sense. Thanks for replying. And keep at it! ~ John Green

  39. The dorm phone numbers also start with 413-545- followed by four digits...so the 3:40a.m. phone call could have been placed to a dorm room or a building (to record a message) on campus.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Correction regarding the dormitory phone numbers...

546-XXXX for dorms, 545-XXXX or 547-XXXX for administration/ buildings on campus. Found via UMass Amherst website.

  41. Is that as far down as the phone bill is shown? Because according to the Maribeth Conway articles in the Express, she called Billy at 4:49 the Sunday morning after she wrecked her father's car. Would be interesting to see what that number was.

  42. I live in Rockland County, NY and New City, NY is not that far from where I live..... It is about 15 minutes from my home.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The way cell phone billing works is the city listed on the bill will display the city your numbers area code is tied to. So if you purchase a cell phone in New City,NY no matter where you are when you call someone the cell phone bill will show New City,NY.

The only way to get location information on where a caller was when a call was placed is from cell towers. That information can be used to view the exact location of the cell tower that was pinged when a particular call was made. This information is not public record though and requires subpenaing the cell phone company to provide the data. So it's only available to LE to a private investigator (legally anyway).

  44. Either way 9 times out of 10 if the cell phone that was called was an NPA- NXX for New City..... That person lived in the Rockland County area. Rockland County is the suburbs and not a large county by any means. It consists of Spring Valley, Monsey, Haverstraw, Nyack, Piermont, Nanuet and Suffern to name a few areas. Unlike NYC which many people in the Rockland County have cell phones #s based out of NYC, Rockland County is not an area would choose to have a cell phone # from the area. I live in Rockland County and my area code for my cell phone is 914 and that is only because Rocklabd County's area code used to be 914 until the area code was split and Westchester County got 914 and Rovklsnd County became 845.

  45. I don't know if this NYC phone number thing has been resolved yet, but I wanted to put my 2 cents in. I'm one year older than Maura, and when I left for college in the early 2000's cell phones were common, but not yet completely the norm. The carrier that my whole family used in my home town didn't yet have coverage at my college town 90 miles away. I'm not even sure if Verizon even existed yet. So when I moved I got a cell phone that covered me, and I had no real choices to choose from. That being said I think it's very likely for that time period that Billy drove a half hour to NYC to buy a phone. At that time large cities were where all the carriers were, and you had a choice in providers. To the person that wrote that he would have simply bought his phone at the West Point PX because they have all carriers... Are you certain they did then over a decade ago? Also, I don't think he would have changed his phone number once he moved. 1) back then everything cellphone related was $expensive$ especially if you were just a college kid and i think to change your number was considered the same as breaking a contract ($$$), also 2) if you're military and you and all your buddies are being split up all over the globe it just makes sense not to change your phone number.
Now to jump around to another issue I just remembered, the use of both phone cards and cell phones. I've seen a lot of people bring up that it was odd/shady/unusual for Maura to use both. You've got to remember back then cell phones weren't like they are today. Unlimited plans (just for talking, no data!) were astronomical in price, especially to a college kid. Also at the time coverage was spotty at best outside of large cities, so even if you had enough minutes, you were either "roaming" at 4x the rate of your plan, or nowhere near a tower period. I used calling cards for all of my long distance for at least my first 2-3 years of college.

  46. This was a time that cell phones were not all there yet. There were NOT towers all over where they could find out where the last ping was and it was said that there was NO cell service in the area she disappeared. I also remember getting bills that I would question on my own bill that would be billed as one thing and were actually a different place. Even said that I would hope that someone would call up all the numbers and getting information from them such as how did they know Maura? What was the nature of the call? etc..
