Search for Maura Involved Multiple Cities & Investigators

In Lt. Landry's affidavit to the court in 2006, he lists all the detectives and agencies that have investigated Maura's disappearance. There are some surprises here:

- Haverhill PD
- New Hampshire State Police
- New Hampshire Fish & Game
- Exeter Police
- Oxford County Sheriff's Dept.
- FBI
- Grafton County Sheriff's Dept.
- Vermont State Police
- UMass PD
- Amherst PD
- Hadley PD
- Rochester PD
- Sullivan County Department of Corrections

  1. I really think there's a chance that the crash gave her the chance to do a spur of the moment vanishing act like a movie plot

    1. I hope you're right. But if she were drinking, this would have greatly impaired any efforts to escape the oncoming authorities. Wasn't the nearest city or town 17 or so miles away? Even for a fantastic runner being tipsy and running in the moonlight on roads that were not ideal to say the least, make for a poor chance that she got away completely on her own steam.

    2. I think I remember reading this, but I could be wrong..

Didn't someone say that Maura had a bad hamstring injury at the time of her disappearance?

I could be wrong, but if true wouldn't is hasten her getting away so fast?

    3. Richard, if her injury hastened her escape, she'd have been faster. I think what you mean is hinder.

  2. James,

I'd be interested to know how many of these agencies were involved in an actual investigation, as opposed to their being on the list due to a sighting that turned out not to be Maura.

I remember reading about a reported Maura sighting in a Rochester bar, which police investigated in July or August 2004, that turned out not to be Maura.

    1. I think Scarinza mentioned this in an earlier Renner post here when he interviewed Scarinza.

    2. I love how it's being called "Renner" posts. Not "blog posts" or "the new entry." RENNER posts. That's how I can tell you're from Topix and ignore you.

  3. So here's a couple observations.

First, I wonder what the Exeter Police Department was looking at? I note that Exeter is within the 20 mile radius of the Londonderry Tower.

Second, I wonder what the Sullivan Department of Corrections was looking at? Sullivan County lies in the space between I-91 and I-89, extending about 35 miles north-south and 20-25 east-west, with its western border running along I-91. Its north-south midpoint along I-91 is about 90 miles from the crash site. I would point out that, in general, people in county jails committed their crime in that county, unlike the Federal system which routinely moves prisoners all over the country independent of their crime. The only exceptions that I can think of would have to do with long incarcerations where the judge orders that the inmate be close to family, or something like that. So does this suggest that someone in jail in Sullivan County at some point - and who thus has a record in Sullivan County - knows about Maura? Is a suspect? Does this suggest that the slack time in Maura's trip from Amherst to the crash was spent in Sullivan County somewhere?

  4. Grafton County (where the accident occurred) occupies the western half of NH, about half way up, north. Carroll County is its counterpart in the eastern half of NH, at roughly the same range of latitudes. 112 and 302 run across these counties and extend east into Oxford County, Maine. So three counties in a row, west to east: Grafton, Carroll and Oxford, with 112 going across them (it is actually 113 that goes the short distance east of Conway into Maine). Interestingly, Bartlett - where is that condo she is known to have called - is in Carroll County. But Carroll County is the one of these three counties whose Sheriff was NOT involved in the investigation.

Does the involvement of Oxford County and non-involvement of Carroll County suggest that LE had or has some evidence or suspicion that Maura was headed into Maine, perhaps to Shawnee or other ski resorts in southern Oxford County where her easterly path on 112, straight ahead, would have taken her? Google Maps gives two routes from Amherst, MA to Shawnee that differ only by 1 mile in travel distance and 6 travel time. One of them is I-91 to 112 and east across NH. Could Maura have had a reservation in that area of Maine, possibly made by someone else or by her with someone else's credit card and/or maybe using another cell phone which one other poster suggested as a possibility? Does LE perhaps know this and already know where she was going?

    1. Perhaps there were sightings of Maura look-alikes in those areas that had to be investigated and reported on by local LE. In one of the New England papers it was reported that Maura was seen in bar in Rochester, NH in Summer, 2004 and Rochester PD is on the list. Probably as simple as all that.

  5. Very curious about the Sullivan County Department of Corrections entry. I wonder if a prisoner may have claimed to have some information about what happened to Maura.

    1. ooooh... I am the dude who made that post about Sullivan. Not only do I think you could be right, but that is ringing a faint bell ... feel like I heard, read, saw somewhere that exactly that happened. I think you might be right, but the details are not coming back to me. Not 100% sure, but I think there was something. ~ John Green

  6. I don't know how involved each of these agencies were, but information like this mitigates against the bizarre and desperate theory that law enforcement know Maura to be alive and simply refuse to divulge such information to her father. True, they would be under no obligation to tell Fred of her whereabouts if they found her alive and well, but it is clear that this is an open missing persons case that is clearly being worked as such.
