  1. Do you have a date for this photo?

    1. It's Linda here, a.k.a Paris. I think this photo was taken in the year 2003. But in the photograph I mentioned back on topix, Maura

is seen wearing a red sweater. There are Christmas decorations on the table too, and like I said, she Also seems to. Shy away there too, seems not to want her picture in the same frame with this guy. when I have time I'll look for the photo and send it to you James.

  3. I have a guess.....

  4. Oh, and if there's reason the cops should be interested in this guy, you might want to give them the photo, as they can do facial recognition searches across a national mugshot database as of last summer.

    1. Good suggestion, although I'm sure the cops already are aware of this guy.

  5. Can you do a google search for similar images or upload the photo to a reverse image matching site like TinEye?

    1. I spent hours trying all of those. It's completely useless. They match this picture with others with similar colors and layout; they don't match the face. Facial-recognition reverse searches are illegal for civilian use here.

I agree he looks a lot like a relative of Maura's. BUT I wouldn't say it is necessarily the case that he is.

Your recent findings are extremely interesting, James. I think we all feel like you're getting really close to cracking this.

    2. Contact Verizon and they will tell you which one of their phones used that video format and how long that format was used. That will give you a time line and possibly help you track the owner of that phone.

  6. I would check what type of phone that picture was taken from. Obviously it's Verizon. Could be an Iphone or Android, both of which only came out recently.

    1. Really? I think you've cracked the case here!

Ever heard of a screen shot on an iPhone? A video was likely sent to James and an image has been posted here as a screen shot. It's a quick, easy way to pull a still shot from a video.

    2. I thought that, too, when I saw it. It looks like a video...did Verizon carry fancy phones like that back in 2004?

    3. Not sure who the guy is, however I see what is almost definitely a disposable camera in the middle of the table. I don't think anyone has those much anymore, especially in social settings like it looks like they are in this picture. So, I think it's a safe bet to say this picture was taken in early 2004 or before that.

    4. It is hard to tell...did this phone take the picture, or did it take a picture of the picture? When I take a picture with my phone, the pictures takes up the whole screen. This looks like it could be a picture of a picture (like a 4x 6 or something).

    5. The picture could have been on someone's computer and they just emailed it to themselves. Possibly, they scanned it or used a digital camera of some sort. I had a digital camera back then. Not as high resolution as the ones today.

  7. Do you have any leads or connections at all as to who this dude is?

    Good luck James!

  8. Based on those distinctive, highly rounded cheek bones and how precisely they match both Maura and Kathleen's - vividly alongside Kathleen in this photo - I'd say this is Kurt or a cousin. (It is easier to see it with the image expanded.)

    1. Kathleen? Surely that is Maura in the photo. I found it interesting that he's got a can of coke in front of him and she's got a half-empty bottle of vodka.

    2. I thought that about the cheeks, too. Is this a photo of Kathleen? Or is this Maura?

      Delete
    3. LOL, definitely NOT Kurt, and I don't think he looks anything like Maura.

      Delete
    4. That's not Kathleen. That's Maura.

    5. Thats a smirnoff ice not a bottle of vodka-its a malt beverage with the same alcohol content of a beer

    6. Yeah, looking again, I can see that it is Maura. What threw me is how heavy she looks in that coat she is wearing, as if she has the shoulders of someone who is somewhat over weight. That made me think it was Kathleen.

  9. To me it looks like a relative.

  10. I could be wrong, but he looks a little Hispanic to me, so probably not a relative.

    1. He looks both (part?-)Hispanic *and* like a relative. Those two possibilities are not mutually exclusive.

      Delete
    2. yes, I think you're right In that he's Hispanic. No big deal, but I get the impression that she's attracted to him. I could be wrong I'm not Gossiping, or being mean, its my impression only and just my humble opinion.

    3. With you Paris ... I see at least the possibility of an expression in Maura that implies she might be attracted to this guy. Of course, as stated below, the picture was apparently cropped out of one that appeared on a television show about Maura's case and more people were present in the photo. Thus seeing the whole photo could alter that impression. Still though - at least the possibility, in the subtleties of her expression - lurks, I agree.

    4. I'm a girl roughly Maura's age and her expression does not say "attraction" to me (not that it isn't possible, of course). Most girls like to smile for photos and it happens that Maura had a naturally lovely smile. That's all I see.

That said, I think it is reaching too far for us to look at the photos and try to fish for conclusions based on her facial expression. It's that kind of thing that makes people cry "random speculation" about this blog, and in this case I think they'd be right.

  11. Those of you asking about what type of phone...I'm assuming that it's a photo that someone sent to Renner's phone, so the technology is irrelevant.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 99% sure that's an old picture pasted into a generic template of a newer phone screen.

The labels on the beer are dated, and if any more confirmation is necessary I'm pretty sure that yellow thing on the table is a disposable camera.

Also look at the way the picture is situated on the "screen". I've never seen a cell phone picture that didn't take up the full screen (imagine how tiny that picture would be on an actual phone), plus its not even centered.

    1. Wonderful observations. Could change the equation some ... if James would tell us what the equation is!

    2. I think if the phone were turned landscape rather than portrait, the image (rather, the 1-minute-24-second-long video) would take the whole screen. This seems to be to have been a screenshot taken with an iPhone 4 or 4s. Aspect ratio isn't right for iPhone 5. (Which I see was already discussed. Ha ha.)

Disposable camera and decorations definitely suggest some kind of landmark party (graduation? surely not wedding, clothing is not fancy enough)... and yeah, I'd agree it's older.

  13. My first reaction was that he was a blood relative too!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't think he's a relative - given his black hair, thick black eyebrows, and olive toned skin he's clearly either part Latin, part Asian, or some mix thereof.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Why is this picture on an IPhone? They were not around back in 2004.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That's definitely Maura......

  17. Can I ask the importance of this photo? Or the reason behind why you'd like to speak to him?

    ReplyDelete
  18. People...this is photo was included in the "Disappeared" episode that featured Maura and the shot above is probably just that video, on an iPhone, paused. Or a screen shot of the original picture cropped, there are more family members present and shown on "Disappeared". Quit focusing on the media and focus on the picture. And btw it's not Kurt, but IS Maura. Mr. Renner spoke to Kurt in 2011, I would think he would recognize him.

    1. I got curious after I read your comment. It's definitely from the show, and he also appears in another photo later on in the episode. Good eye!

    2. Geez ... stop beating up on me about the Kurt comment. : ) I wan't trying to piss everyone off. I was just saying that it looked like a relative maybe because of the distinct cheekbones. Also, the reason I was thinking Kathleen and not Maura was because in the pic the woman looks very heavy around her shoulders, unlike Maura. But I get it ... that is Maura. I already said that. Good catch though on where the photo came from. Good job. Just kidding in my diction here, no offense was taken. Again, great catch.

    3. Now I want to watch the Disappeared episode again this weekend! Although, I think my husband will go crazy if he sees this episode again since I've watched it so many times. He is very logical and said it sounds like she hated someone so much that she wanted to get away from them, and never talk to them again. Probably someone in her family. He isn't a crime buff like me and is only going from the few details from the show and some things I've told him about the case.

  19. Is he the French-Canadian "hunk"?

  20. well, the picture is clearly from the screen shot option of an iPhone. But, depending on the way the picture was recieved, its possible to go into the file data of it,recover some exif data potentially narrow done what kind of camera took the picture, time and date, and even what ip addy was used to initally upload the photo.

    1. See imgops.com for tools to get that data. However, it won't work on the picture on this site, only on the picture from its original source.

    1. Very correct. Its a disposable camera on the table. Those cameras are relics and very rarely used now a days if ever. Theres also out dates soda cans on the table. This is a very old picture.

  23. The hair reminds me of styles that guys in the military would keep, although it looks like he has some facial hair and longer sideburns. When I was in the Army a lot of my friends would let their facial hair grow while on leave.
