**UPDATED** So This Is Weird

One of the women that Maura had clinicals with was an Asian-American student named Martha Nagle aka Martha Park aka Martha Vivar.

Here's the message I got from Martha today:

I'd like to help but I'm also related to Maura and I don't feel comfortable talking about this with you. Only out of respect for Maura's family. Thank you anyway. Good luck with your research.

On follow-up, she explained that she was related through marriage. And then she blocked me on Facebook.

Can't figure this one out. How exactly does that work? Did Maura make the introductions before she disappeared? It didn't seem like they were close, according to classmates. So, did it happen after the fact? Or is it a lie?

Could use some help figuring this one out.

**UPDATE**
One location that appears in Martha's history is in the town of Taunton.

Taunton, as you know, is where the person who posted the Geocities letter (the one that explains that some family members know that Maura is living in Canada) was from. As several people have pointed out, that letter appeared to have been written by someone who was trained as a nurse. Like Martha. And was somehow related to Maura. Like Martha. And was in Taunton. Like Martha.

When asked to comment, Martha wrote: Fuck you. How's that for a comment?

  1. My first instinct is that this is just a coincidence.

Doesn't seem that unusual that they might have known some of the same people, even if they weren't close.

    I don't see why she'd lie.

I think the complexity and weirdness of this case make it tempting to over-read into stuff. I've certainly fallen prey to that temptation many times. Sometimes it's the right impulse; sometimes it isn't. I just think there's so little information here that, unless more comes in, we might as well just apply Occam's Razor and call it a day.

  2. Pretty sure if you run one of those $50 complete background checks on her it will tell you when she lived in Taunton - if you can match that up with the email, chances are very high she's the one. That would be an interesting development indeed.

Such a report also might give better insight as to how she's related to Maura because it will include names of relatives, spouses, etc.

  3. The fact that she said "good luck with your research" as opposed to "goox luck with your search" speaks volumes. Think about it.

  4. Wow, I missed the "good luck with your research" instead of search bit. It'd be interesting to see how she is related and when she married a family member. Do they have marriage licenses on file as public record in Massachusetts? Seems like if she is the writer of that geocities comment, maybe that was her way of helping in what way she could.

  5. Looks like she the relative who acts as the spokesperson for the family and another Dwyer as her friends, so maybe she is related through them? It doesn't look like it is through her husband, he seems to be from Washington State.

  6. So we no longer think it's Patti Davis/citigirl?

    1. Who is she anyways? Do you have a photo?

  7. I think she doth protest too much. My gut says she's your Deep Throat who wrote about the family knowing Maura is alive.

  8. If she is alive and living in Canada (which I believe), why is the family going to such extremes to keep her hidden? Even if she were convicted of credit card fraud she wouldn't serve more than a year or two, right? All of this cloak and dagger stuff makes the whole family look cracked.

    1. Vicki I would hide out to avoid three days in prison. Who wouldn't want to avoid potential imprisonment if that option were possible? The majority of people face the music, but a certain few feel that hiding out, with all the rigors of having to live a life in the shadows, is a notch above the alternative.

  9. I just love the coincidence that Butch Atwood also used to be a bus driver in Taunton. So strange.

  10. I thought Butch Atwood worked for the police department in Taunton- did he also drive a bus there?
