Murray Family Threatens Violence After Chronicle Episode Airs

Last night, WCVB's Chronicle devoted a half hour to the disappearance of Maura Murray. I was interviewed on camera for this, sharing reasons Maura had to run away, things like credit card fraud. Some uncomfortable questions were put to Fred, finally.

The extended Murray clan took to Facebook immediately following the airing of the program in the Greater Boston area to hurl insults, which eventually escalated to out-right threats.

From Jerry Thomes:

he should keep his fuckin mouth shut and off of fb. god forbid this idiots son goes missing.

Followed by this, from Maureen Gillis Fantasia:

he dont like it?how does it feel

From Tammy Abbott:

the people who know her know the truth... like you would hopefully know if something happened to your family or someone you know inside and out...

Most relatives simply settled on name calling.

Mike Abbott:

you're nothing but a fame seeking a hole

Vicky Antonowicz

you sick sad fucker !

Matt Casey:

Renner is just a bottom feeder looking to line his pockets by writing a book

Mark Manuel:

has the police looked in to this James Renner Journalist from Akron Ohio?

No wonder Maura wanted to run away.

As soon as the Chronicle episode is posted on YouTube, I'll share it here.

  1. Wow the family really dont want people to know the truth of her disappearance. Anytime someone tries to shed light on the case they just attack. Well anytime someone is saying anything that isnt exactly what they want to be said. Does Tammy Abbott indicate that if you knew Maura you know what happend to her or did renner attack Mauras personality in the segment that is what she is reffering to? (I have not seen the segment yet.)

  2. Tammy Abbott: "The people that know her know the truth."

Just throwing it out there... that is a really, really interesting statement. And even more so that it is in the present tense.

    1. That was what I was thinking aswell. But I am not sure if she is talking about how Maura was as a person or her disappearance. Is there a way to find the original posts?

    2. She's probably insinuating that Renner doesn't have a clue what happened to her, but the family knows/believes she was abducted by a local "dirt bag"

    3. I'm sure that's more or less what she is insinuating. But as far as the dirt bag is concerned, there is a big difference between "knows" and "believes".

If they "believe" that, that's fine. But it's hard to conceive of a scenario in which they "know" that for a fact and would still continue to sweep the realities of Maura's life under the rug. I'm taking Tammy's words at face value, not as being indicative of something absolute (such as knowledge of Maura's whereabouts etc.), but just as something worth considering.

Sort of along the same lines, I've done a lot of bad things in my life, as well as (at least I like to think) a lot of good. If I disappeared, and something legitimately bad befell me, I would hope that my family would focus on those negative aspects of my life, because in all likelihood those negative aspects would be related to whatever my fate was. Because at that point, who gives a shit about what I may have done? I just need to be found.

On the other hand, if I disappeared intentionally, it would ALSO probably be related to the negatives in my life, and if my family was attempting to shield me from being located, the obvious course of action for them would be to steer the discussion away from those negatives.

This line of logic is not exactly groundbreaking, but it is at the core of the reason that I personally think Maura could still be alive. If not for the family's actions, I would consider it next to impossible.

    4. I get what you’re saying and agree to some degree.

If my daughter went missing I would do whatever it took to find her even if it meant unveiling some family secrets that might tarnish my daughter’s or my image. I would arrange an interview with James Renner as he has such a large following and so many people interested in the case. I would want him looking in the right direction instead of wasting time on dead ends. So why wouldn’t Fred have an interview with James? 1) Fred must think James is a complete idiot, is off course, and not worth the time 2) Fred knows what happened and is protecting himself 3) Fred doesn’t know what happened but is holding back key information that might shed light on what happened to protect his image or family’s image.
If I had to guess, I think it’s likely #3. I’ve always thought she committed suicide or was reckless and it led to her death.

    5. I saw the whole exchange and I don't think Tammy was being precise enough with her statements to read anything into the tense.

      Delete
    6. I think TheTruth is right, she clearly (at least to me) meant the "local dirt bag" theory.

      Delete
    7. I saw the whole thing unveil, what I know is that what Tammy meant was "if you knew her, you'd know this was not likely", you would know the things that James are insinuating are so far beyond her norm. If he wanted to help the family, he would start from the beginning. (not 5yrs in) start with the last person who saw her. Raise money to excavate the area of the last person to see her.... (those supposed 3-7 minutes) neighbors should have been aware (we won't even get into what the police "couldn't" do). Maybe civilly we could ask or court ask for a way to search the neighbors (esp. Last to have seen her alive...before they paved their driveway and moved away) Raise money to search and replace anything thing that may get disturbed. THAT is what would help the family!!!! NOT looking into mostly untrue or not significant past allegations that if it was your family, you'd know it was not even a possibility of running away. Someone that REALLY wanted to help and not just get paid for interviews and a book, that REALLY cared would start at the beginning (and not where the cops came in (they were too late)) If you want to help Renner, please help, don't make false allegations that aren't your fault, they just make a good story. Help find answers!

    8. There is a lot to be said about the tense people speak in because it's part of our stream of conciousness, or in other words, we dont give much thought to it when we speak. She said "know her" not "knew her." I find that interesting.

    2. Speaking firmly and unabashedly candidly through the words flowing directly and unquestionably gracefully from my thoughts to the computer screen, I say unhesitatedingly and boldly that lurking beneath the trollerly of John Wolfman Smith is a dastardly desire to underhandedly and irreparably sway the simple minds of the masses to carry tenderly in their hearts a compassion for the unquestionably vile and corrupt Murray clan.

  4. I truely feel for Mr. Murray and his family. To suffer a loss of a child under any circumstance would be horiffying to anybody.
For a total stranger to call him out(Mr. Renner),short of accussing him of having something to do with Maura's being missing is F'd up.
It seems to me that you Mr. Renner have taken the role of Judge and Jury at the expense of the Murray family to sell a few books.

    1. I agree that its wrong to point the finger (or allmost as in this case) at Fred without having any evidence at all. What i dont understand is why Fred wont just answear some simple questions about the case. If he dont want to talk to Renner I could understand this but then atleast write an open letter adressing some of the concerns. When people donated money for full page ads about Maura in the paper it was not because they wanted to "bust" Fred but because they want to find Maura. In the end this case would not have near the attention still today if it wasent for Renner. That is what makes it so strange when the family want to "silence" him.

      Delete
    2. Viktor, ask yourself why Renner spends his own money to search for Maura.Out of all the missing persons cases why this one?
What might be his angle?Maybe, just maybe its to cash in on a book.
He's got plenty of follower's that give there ideas of what could have happened.Hell, there practiclly writing the book for him. He's been stirring the $hit pot up by Brutely hammering the family.Why?..Its all about the $$$$ in the end.
If he came out and said..All profit from my Book about Maura will be donated back to find her, thats one thing. But he won't.
In the end he'll make a ton off his book & it will be Maura who after that.

    3. But... It's not "just this one". He has investigated the Amy Mihaljevic case for years with his own money and written a book about that, and he's making a push to get the Lisa Pruett case reopened.

Not to mention, I've seen people on the Maura Murray Facebook page actively bait him with "open letter" posts appealing to him directly and obviously trying to get a response. That's entirely counterproductive if they just want him to go away and shut up. I can't imagine him writing the book, publishing it, and then setting the case aside because he has absolutely not done that with Amy Mihaljevic. Not to mention he writes fiction as well, and his first novel got picked up by a studio... so why would he need to "get rich" off this particular case anyway?

  5. Questions asked to Fred Murray by LE will never be known. Fred has only REFUSED to answer questions to those who will cloud the waters. Reporters, writers, sleuths, and ONLINE UNKNOWN IDENTITIES.

You people have NO CLUE what Fred has been asked and what he has answered.

    2. So people wanting to spend their time/money to help find a missing woman who the police have not been able to find for the last 10 years is bad? When there could be a killer out there who will or has done this again?

      Delete
    3. We may not have a "clue" to what LE asked Fred, but rest assured they asked him questions that, in his mind, took two years to answer, right? Didn't it take him that long to actually sit down with LE and do an interview? 24 months your daughter is missing and his is dodging the detectives.....why? Because he is paranoid? He's afraid they are trying to frame him? Lame. The only people who don't cooperate with LE in the beginning stages of an investigation are those people who have things to hide, and sometimes the guilty do cooperate because they have such massive egos. Does it make him a killer? Nope. Does it make him seem suspicious of something? Yes. I do believe many people who follow this case are hoodwinked by the tiny amount of media coverage they've seen. Fred has not answered tough questions. Julie has not answered tough questions. Katerline has not answered tough questions. The only one as far as I know that let it all hang out it Katerline's ex-boyfriend, Tim. And I will promise you he will labeled unreliable by the Fred supporters and "dirtbag" promoters when the book is released. His interview is going to be the one I look forward to the most; he was right in the mix and shoulder to shoulder with Fred during the searches.

  7. I would not mind hearing from family supportes; the top 5 lies or fales truths ; Mr.Renner has uncovered or reported .
    1)
    2)
    3)
    4)
    5)

And honestly i do not wish this on any family. And especially have to re live it every aniversary. But Fred said he will never stop quitting on his daughter. At this point positive or negative theories keep her name in the limelight. So putting it out there what are the top 5 most disturbing false truths told by Mr Renner, that most bother the family that have been said stated or incinuated?

  8. Im confused as to where any violence is here?? I see none? The Murrays are not the first family that James Renner has "picked" on. Please see link below what he said about 10 year old Amy Mihaljevics family. This poor girl was abducted and murdered at age 10. And Renner does this to them. JAMES WHEN DO YOU THINK A FAMILY HAS DEALT WITH ENOUGH???? just curious James if you have ever really solved ANY cases? Or are you just always just making insulting accusations ?

    1. that is because victims of fould play almost always know their perpetrators. It is customary to look at family first. Mr. Renner looking at family is nothing unusual or to be scorned. It woudl be reproachable of he was proven wrong and he clung to his accusations despite proof. But suspecting a family member and exploring the possibility of their guilt does not make someone a witch hunter. It makes them an experienced investigator.

Tell us about Maura or tell us about Fred in a way that you want. Your actions now only make you look worse. People on this forum donated money to help find her and not one thank you from any of you,

Are you saying just leave it the hands of LE? yea the LE that Fred ripped as being inadequate. I think you are lucky that Renner came along to spark more interest because even if his theory is wrong he is still keeping interest high and pressure on Le to find the answers.

  11. I find it odd that FM family keeps making threats to make JRs son disappear. If I had a missing family member and my family was as dysfunctional and coo coo as these people as well as being looked at as suspects in a missing persons case, the very last thing I would do is threaten to make someone else disappear. Makes me wander if they're so certain they can accomplish this because they have done it before?

    1. This group of family and friends screwed up when they listened to the cry to shut up about the case, If they were truly interested in finding Maura then they could have represented in a much classier way.

Let me say this' many people here have given many many hours to help dig and solve to help bring closure ( it is called support).

Yea' there are some strange ones out of the wood work but there are also some very caring people that actually live near where Maura went missing that might be able to help with some detail in some way.

I feel that Mauras family and friends make a mockery of these people and yes I am one of those .

I understand that it is very uncomfortable to have bad light shed on people you know but if you could only just come out and tell people the truth and how you feel then I think this case would be further ahead.

    2. digging real DEEP for the "uncomfortable bad light" to make a name or book for yourself is unfair....I'm not going to say don't "follow" his beliefs, like a cult. But if you were ever on the opposite end you might see that some ppl just want to make a buck and make things up to make a good story. please don't fall for everything you read. The family could use some real investigative work...not just someone's story or theories!

    3. Yea I get that but why did they tell John Healy that they no longer wanted him to Help?
Also= I know it must hurt for family info to come out but mauras prob;ems could have stemmed from some of it ? yea nea? Did she run for a new life? was there a reason? Renner has shown a pretty good reason.

Maura was quiet so it has been said right? Kept stuff inside as we all do

    4. I think you misunderstood my post. What I'm saying is MM family shouldn't be threatening to make JRs son dissapear when suspicions lead to the family for helping/making/knowing of MM disappearance. If your family is a suspect in a suspicious missing persons case the last thing you should do is threaten to make anyone else dissapear. That makes people wander if they have experience/ways/contacts that can make a disappearance truely happen.

  12. Response to just sayin:

Does anyone know what was really going on in Mauras mind? Maura was said to be very reserved and it is very obvious that there was some under current. Does family know what this was? Something caused her to take her crappy car and drive 3 plus hours.

Thank you for responding as it is a good start

  15. With all due respect, this doesn't read like threats of violence. They know what it's like to have someone go missing and therefore said god forbid you ever do. Imagine having someone like you getting involved in the case thinking he's "helping."

    ReplyDelete
  16. oh my goodness..... these are not threats in anyway, they are just making a point on James should think about how this family feels before saying things that there is no proof of. simple as that!
Also, on the Mauras mom issue, the title you put out there is not a true statement it seems, if you had any morals you would at the least re-word it to show the truth, twisting of issues once again.
JAMES- I saw it asked if you have ever "picked" a man/woman that was ever actually found guilty of one of these crimes you have written about? Has any of the people you have dragged thru the mud actually ever been convicted of what you are accusing them of? I would think you would answer this? I would probably have more faith in you if you had some proof of your credibility? Could you please let us know what murder/ missing cases you have solved in the past?

    1. I worked with the family of Tina Harmon to get that case reopened. We successfully forced the state to retest the evidence. DNA was found and they were able to close the case. I consider that a success. Dean Runkle remains the lead suspect in the abduction/murder of Amy Mihaljevic. Whether or not he is ultimately found guilty of that crime, we know that he crossed the line with several other students and in one instance was writing love letters to an eighth grader. I remain on very good terms with Amy's family.

    1. Actually, I believe the tally is: Renner: 1, Bad Guys: 12.

The answer to your other question is never.

But what you're probably referring to was the story I wrote for Scene Magazine about a state senator who was having an affair with a staffer and using campaign funds to take her to Ohio State games.

The article was approved by the editor and publisher to run but at the eleventh hour the CEO stepped in and spiked it. I called him a coward. He fired me for insubordination.

I then gave the story to the internet and it was picked up by several news websites.

I then sued Scene and the senator and won my case.

      Here's some more info: http://www.ohio.com/news/journalist-sues-cleveland-scene-over-firing-1.135046

Actually, this whole story as well as many others will be included in the book.

    2. Let me be clear for the record, the case was settled out of court to my satisfaction. One of the conditions being that the senator had to admit I'd never libeled him.

    4. C'mon. You know this. I've talked about it on here before. My younger sister was being stalked by an animal control officer. I confronted him in court and was subsequently charged w/ contempt of court and attempted resisting arrest. The guy stopped stalking my sister. But I should have handled it a little smoother. This episode will also be in the book. Be patient. You'll get your chance to pick it apart soon.

  18. Its good to see James answering peoples questions, unlike others. If everyone were a lot more open and OPEN minded to all facts and not be quick to dismiss every point that comes up we would be closer to solving this case.

  19. I think Mr. Renner is handling the critics with remarkable gentleness. As much as James and I part ways on politics and social issues, the way he runs his blog and crime research is awesome. If anyone reading the blog lately can't see what James is doing, you're missing the big picture. Fred Murray is essentially at war with Renner; it may not declared verbally, but we can see the tension. James is brilliantly posting updates that will show the ugly side of the Murray clan in small doses. I hope they get the message that he probably has tons of dirt on them that he will slowly release before the book hits if they don't cooperate.

  20. "I hope they get the message that he probably has tons of dirt on them that he will slowly release before the book hits if they don't cooperate."
I honestly do not believe that James would engage in that kind of behavior. That sounds like blackmail, and James (I would hope, and believe) has more integrity than that.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Hans, just to be clear: After reading what I wrote I realize that what I said could be offensive. I am not saying that you have no integrity for suggesting that. It is understandable given that the Murray's are so reluctant to speak and add anything that actually helps move the case forward. What I wanted to convey is that I hope James doesn't go down that road and that the act itself would seem shady to me.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Personally, as other people have remarked, there are families w. missing kids out there who would give ANYTHING to have a journalist of Renner's stature looking into the case. For the life of me, I cannot understand why the Murrays are so reticent.

I have a 16-year-old, and while I think he's the greatest kid ever, I'm sure he's gotten over a few things I don't know about and wouldn't be happy about if I did :) By the time he's 21, I'm sure there will be more. I'm pushing 50, and there are plenty of things I (and my spouse) have done that we're not proud of. And you know what?

If my son went missing under mysterious circumstances, you better believe I'd be telling LE EVERY SINGLE ONE.

I am a former public defender, and while I'm not of the "blame the victim" school, there were times when prosecutors would completely whitewash what a victim was a like (i.e., a mean, paranoid alky with severe PTSD became a "shy, retiring Vietnam veteran who liked a good time.") To them, it was just helping things along...their job was to win, and if the victim looked that much better, the defendant looked that much worse. Perhaps the Murrays are afraid that if the truth is known re: Maura's/the family's issues then people may lose interest; I hardly think that's the case, as this blog shows. FM seems to be the type who doesn't like to acknowledge ANY weakness, but most of us, I think, are more compassionate. My spouse and I both did plenty of dumb things at the age of 21, and so do a lot of people. I don't have much patience with DUIs, but who knows what was going on w. the poor girl.

The point is, Renner isn't digging up dirt for its own sake. There are, as others have pointed out, two separate mysteries here: why Maura ran in the first place, and what happened after the accident (staged, or not?) But they aren't really separate; one could very well have a bearing on the other. It's certainly true that you need to be very careful dealing w. LE--they can make bad or even outright false cases, and I don't blame FM for bringing lawyers along; I would do the same. But if he is serious about bringing his daughter home, he needs to come clean about more than he has. The whole family does. Keeping secrets hasn't done them any good so far.
