Top Commenter on Family Forum is Suspect in Another Murder

The Murray family blocked me from the official Maura Murray Facebook page about a month ago after I corrected some false statements about the case, there. However, they're totally cool giving space to Jim Vittum, who was one of the last people to see Stacey Burns alive.

Since her murder, in Wolfeboro, NH, in 2009, Vittum has been considered a suspect, according to the family.  Burns had just broken up with Vittum and he had been with her the night before her children found her dead.

The logger has had several run-ins with the law since the murder, accused of stalking Burns' children and ex-husband. NH recently denied him a concealed carry permit.

It is becoming quite a circus over there.

  1. James I must ask you, what does this have to do with Maura missing at all?

Even IF he is a killer there is nothing as far as I know connecting him to the disappearance of Maura Murray. As such the only reason for you posting this would be out of revenge(?) or spite because you feel that you have been treated wrong. I think you have been treated wrong in several cases with all the accusations and mean comments people have made against you. This however is no reason for you to sink to the same level or lower.

Take a step back. Remember that this is about finding Maura and not a fight with the Murray's. The focus is in a rapid pace going from shining the spotlight on Mauras case to your conflict with the Murray´s. (and theirs with you and web-sleuths like me) Its sad and it does not have to be this way. I really think James that you are right about asking the hard questions and confronting the family with facts but please keep it relevant.

    1. Spot on, Viktor. James, I really dislike the direction you are taking with these last few posts man.

I know you're a journalist and all, but the topic at hand is a very, very sensitive one. Do you want to lose all your lifelines AKA people previously willing to speak to you? It just fends people off from the cause.

    2. James could be saying it might be relevant cause this guy is all over that facebook page posting things relating to Maura's case. He has a criminal record of sorts, a basis of stalking and homicidal (possibly) behavior. Maura could have been running because she was being stalked (maybe). And the fact that the woman he is a suspect of murdering was killed in NH, the same state where Maura disappeared. It could be a coincidence, but I think its interesting that hes all over the fb forum saying unseal the grand jury findings of 2006. Really why would a person say that unless they know something other than what the media and LE have let the public know?

    3. I agree to some degree with LeFalautist that this is not totally irrelevant as something to consider, given the substantial evidence that at least Fred has been deceptive about this case. However, more than that, I am with Viktor and Chris. The matter is presented in a sensationalist way, as have been a few other matters lately. James, I do respect what you are doing, but you are losing just a little credibility with me, by the way because you are making sensationalist claims and suggestions. For me, this ties back to you claim, back in early November that you knew who she was with and where she went, and that you were weeks away from solving the case. You have never returned to that, even after your expedition to Canada turned up nothing credible. In that context, while I dislike saying this, what you are doing on the blog lately does not seem like legitimate journalism and smacks of sensationalist marketing. I find that disturbing.

    5. John, weren't you going to charge people to view your evidence of this case? You have no room to criticize anyone, especially on this blog. You talked to people who disagreed with you like they were dogs. You have no cred, bro. And you were never on the cover of a Science magazine..

    6. I can only speak for myself, but I find you disturbing. As do others from what I have read. You think you stalking Fred at his home is journalism? You have no right to judge.

    7. I second (or seventh?) that, Viktor.

  2. And what does this have to do with Maura's case..........

    Nothing.
If there is a connection why don't you provide some facts?

If you keep posting articles like this you are going to lose all credibility, readers, and sources of information because people think you're a loon. And I'm starting to think the same. Unbelievable. Who care's about the criminal record of someone who post's on fb or any other thread.

Is this what your book is going to be about. Wild accusations and unsubstantiated "connections". Nothing about the actual facts of the case?

  3. James, I would like to echo both Viktor and Chris's comments and appeal to you to refrain for introducing material to this blog that is irrelevant to finding Maura Murray, which ultimately is what this blog is about (at least I hope and do genuinely believe).

I have read every post you have made here. I do not agree with a lot of what you say or the direction you have taken with your investigation but I respect what you are doing because I believe you are fundamentally well-intentioned in your actions and, as far as I am concerned, anyone who is interested and invests their time in finding out what happened to Maura and, hopefully, succeeds in bringing closure and some sort of peace to her family and friends, is a good person.

That said, I have found your most recent posts and the general tone of the blog of late to particularly jarring. I do not know what is at the root of this but I appeal to you to step back and think again. Why did you start this? Maybe you have lost focus of that. Maybe you are starting to take this personally. But you can't be surprised that you are provoking people, especially those close to Maura? You said it yourself you are asking the 'hard questions'.

James, I appreciate the time that you have invested both in your investigation and in maintaining this blog. It has certainly added to my understanding of Maura's case and has introduced me to possibilities I may not otherwise have considered. Ultimately, however, I am only concerned for finding Maura and brining her home to her family one way or another.

I wish you the best of luck in your continuing endeavours.

    1. Very well said, Alan. I can't add to this; you've said it perfectly in my opinion.

    2. Yes, well said, Alan. James is a remarkably talented reporter and writer, and big-picture, he is doing a public service by highlighting cold cases. But, as even he has said, this has developed into an addiction, and addiction is a beast that needs to be fed, more and more over time, until it takes over. In fairness, his commitment to this investigation is apparent, and this case is unusually all-consuming; to do it right, he has to immerse himself - which is exactly what causes journalism to morph into editorializing. (And so the title/angle of his book is spot-on, I will say. James may be polarizing at times, but he's also, rather refreshingly, self-aware.)

  4. I Agree totally with you guys...James,you really are out of line with your most recent posts...Its easy to Bully a family thru cyber...Like I said before...keep poking the bear..
Finding Maura for her family is what you should be doing..not Bullying..this makes no sence/

    1. I don't think the blog is becoming pointless, I believe this blog serves a very important purpose. James has detailed a lot of very important information here, and I think it would be fair to say it's one of the best resources we have for understanding Maura Murray's disappearance. I think the truth is definitely out there :)

That said, I am concerned by James' conduct of late. Let me be clear that I do understand that this is his blog and I support his right to run it as he wishes, but it's clear that there are some issues that I believe need to be addressed. I've made my thoughts on comment moderation/community rules known in previous comments, but in recent months I also have noticed a lot of conflict/confusion between James and his readers. It appears James may be alienating some of the community here, albeit inadvertently. The fact that James is almost entirely absent from the comments (apart from moderating some for reasons that are unclear) is a worry, the fact that questions get repeatedly asked and remain unanswered is also a concern to me.

James, I support your work and applaud your dedication, really I do. I have so much respect for your efforts. I simply ask that you consider engaging openly with the community and be as clear and communicative as possible.

    2. Renner is trying to elicit a credible death threat or actual physical confrontation against either him or his family so he can call in the FBI. The only problem with that strategy is that all of the characters in this drama are white. If only Maura Murray had lived in a state that respected the 2nd Amendment, she'd probably be alive today.

    3. That's a pretty racist comment..... Black people are raped/murdered/kidnapped/stalked as much as a white person or anyone else.

  9. It has other value too-creepy in relation to Mrs. Burns's brutal slaying-he admitted his blood was under her nails--says she picked out a sliver that day for him. He made statements on MM missing page that echo statements LE have said about him during the Burns case ("This Case Is Solved"). He washes Fred Murrays balls on that wall. It's all very creepy. I think he's also single and trying to flirt with girls on there. Always good to know who the POIs are on the FB Missing Girl pages. Plus I'm sure LE has noticed his alignment with FM while railing against The Same NH LE investigating both cases. Great post and Thanks for sharing James

  10. Renner should absolutely be reporting when any top suspects in recent murders suddenly interject themselves into Maura's case.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Especially when they're from the area.

His participation on the MM Facebook page is in bad taste at best.

And if you want to swing for the fences you might consider this the ultimate "returning to the scene of the crime" 21st century style.

That tendency is real and more common in what criminologists call "disorganized serial killers". Disorganized killers are opportunistic. If Maura was picked up and killed that night because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time then it was a disorganized serial killer that did it.

"He may also have an inappropriate interest in the crime, for example, by frequently engaging in conversation about it. Disorganized behavior may be evident in victim selection, crime scene, and forensics due to youthfulness, drug or alcohol impairment, external stressors (for example, fear of discovery), or lack of criminal sophistication."

  12. I totally agree that the most recent posts on this blog focus on rumourish, irrelevant events and it is pretty understandable that FM and other members of Maura's family won't talk to James. Why? The recent posts including this one (and especially those bashing Fred with no solid proof whatsoever) are simply offensive and do NOT help get any new important facts, not to mention solve the case AT ALL. In my opinion, by posting such things, JR is kind of a bridge burner, which prevents him from getting access to facts and statements from Maura's friends and family that may actually be relevant to the investigation. The recent posts are just placeholders posted while awaiting something relevant, most likely from the news. Because nobody who was involved in Maura's last days before the disappearance will talk to James. MM's family and friends are obviously people who are sensitive when it comes to their and Maura's image. If you deal with such people, you are more likely to get any information by approaching them in a respectful way, not by posting things James has posted. Once they (I mean the crucial characters) have all shut down on James, I believe it impaired his investigation to such extent that he really has few credible leads to go on with. I'm not saying if it's okay or not to be SO sensitive when it comes to one's image in situations like this, all I'm trying to point out is that when you realize you deal with such people (which was fairly clear from the beginning), you adjust your methods or don't expect them to work with you. It's sad because I strongly believe James is a talented investigator, but you cannot get water out of a stone: I mean you don't get plausible theories out of the sources James has been sporting lately. The recent posts seem to be a product of a dead end in the investigation and the will to keep the blog running.

    1. Great post and spot on. I think JR has hit a dead end and has already burned so many bridges and this is the result we get and can expect to get from here on out IMO, unless a major lead comes out from another source.
