A new look at one of the North Country's Coldest Cases
Could it be a tribute by a friend as we approach the 10th anniversy of her disappearance? Does this woman have links to UMass or Hanson?
BoSoxFan...that might be it. Looking through her friends' list, it doesn't appear that she has any contacts from there. Nothing in her other info helps with that, either.
It's certainly an odd thing to do. Though maybe it's just another person who, like us, is baffled and captivated by this mystery.
Interesting that none of her contacts have last name of Taylor (as in relatives; I find that unusual). Also, she's a runner! Could it be this easy?
Someone complimented the photo (Maura's headshot). What if this person can confirm this being Maura?
Recall the now-solved case that once was paired with Maura's in the media, the disappearance of Brooke Wilberger. Before that case was solved, I remember seeing an article about how people were posting her picture in various places suggesting that the image was them. This could be nothing more than there are lots of strange and disturbed people out there, and we have seen in the online discussions of Maura's case that hers is one that tends to attract them.~ John Green
James, I am sort of curious as to why this is worth posting or thinking about? There is nothing to even slightly suggest that some freak posting a widely circulated picture of Maura has anything to do with the case? Meanwhile, your claim from over two months ago that you know who Maura went with and where she went and were weeks away from solving the case is not returned to. I respect you James, but what really is the value of this?~ John Green
Why did you think about it then?
Even stranger all of her friends are from/ live in westerly or within 20 miles. Which you might think is normal but westerly is tiny and you would think a friend might move further away then a quick drive.
I agree with everyone. Its a weird thing to do if you're just a concerned on-looker. Maybe Facebook can provide info on the real user...?
There is an Alexandra Ashley Taylor but her license has been expired for 8 plus years and she went to school at the Univ of Penn and not Univ of Rhode Island as the FB page indicates.
If "Alexa Taylor" just grabbed this head shot off the Internet to use as her own because she liked it (people sometimes do that on FB when they don't want to reveal what they really look like), then isn't it odd that she has also has a friend from New Hampshire (the guy who complimented her on the picture) and she also indicates in a post that she enjoys running. Also, she just happens to be a nurse, which is what Maura was studying in school. A lot of coincidences there. Hmmm...
Sorry, the guy who complimented her is not from New Hampshire, he's from Westerly, but HIS friend has a post on his wall talking about living in New Hampshire all of her life.
I'm of two minds about this.1.) Is this a photo that has circulated in the public sphere before? If not, how did 'Alexa' get this photo?2.) If this is really Maura, why on earth would she ruin her cover by using her own photo?I lean towards thinking this might have been someone Maura knew, using the picture to mark the anniversary.
The dog pic looks like it originated from a German Shepherd training sitehttp://egermanshepherdtraining.com/This is the only pic I saw in a google search of German Shepherd. My guess is all other uses where copied.
For both 1 and 2, I meant the picture of Maura, not the dog, but thanks! :D
did you message her at all, james?
I think the whole account is fake and the creator added a bunch of random people to make it look legit. The account was created in 2012 but there is a lack of personal posts on the wall. You would think that there would be one happy birthday from a friend or something. That coupled with the fake dog and internet photo of Maura. I feel like if it was a friend trying to get awareness about Maura she would have posted a message with the photo since most people probably dont know what Maura looks like. Just a thought.
I agree I think it's fake, but it's a planted fake account. Check out when "Alexa" changed her profile picture to the photo of Maura. August 26th 2013 so this has been sitting there for a while. And discovering something like this is a waiting game, you would have to be doing a photo search of Maura pictures and clicking on source photos I.e. What James did with the tiny eye application
I just checked out Alexa Taylor's facebook page. I believe she has too many friends to be fake. Typically fake profiles have only a few friends and they are rarely local friends. The friends typically would not be close to each other either...too risky that they might start talking. Also, I dont think the guy who commented on her picture was complimenting her. I think he was being sarcastic by saying "very cute", like an "I cant believe you did that." I do find it intersting that one of the photos she posted was a meme about facebook being a place for adults to have imaginary friends. Also, whoever this is likes Nutella :) I think if it was Maura it woudl be pretty ballsy considering that facebook info (including URL addresses for certain accounts) can be included in police warrants and subpoenas. Let's not forget she has commited crimes. I think at best this is a person who knows Maura. That's my two cents!
I'm familiar with the Westerly area, and I agree with chefsgirl. The RI licensing registry shows no nursing or other licenses issued to an Alexa Taylor. (The closest thing is an Alexandra Taylor, who is now a pediatrician in Delaware.) The Alexa Taylor profile simply has too many local friends, local likes to be merely a fake. If it is a fake, somebody familiar with the area had to put in a lot of work, for no obvious benefit. We should remember, posting a profile photo does not automatically mean the photo is being represented as oneself. Before putting up the Maura Murray photo, Alexa Taylor had a photo of a German Shepherd as her profile picture. Most likely, Ms Taylor is simply someone with a quirky sense of humor. On the other hand, there is something strange, on several levels, about the claim of employment at RI Hospital. Westerly is about an hour from Providence. It's much closer to Norwich or New London, Ct. There probably are people from Westerly who work in Providence, but it wouldn't be the norm. I do see an Alexandra Taylor listed in the Ct nursing license registry. She was licensed 6/30/2010, and her license expired 1/31/12 She is listed as being from Fairfield, Ct, the southwestern corner of the state, so I'd not assume that this is the same person.
Taylor could easily be her middle name. Plenty of people go by their first and middle names on facebook. I find this to be of almost no interest, EXCEPT for the "very cute" comment on the profile picture. Either that was sarcasm, or she looks a lot like Maura. I highly doubt that Maura Murray is living in Westerly and using one of her old pictures for her profile picture, though I would love that to be the case.
I believe this profile is a classic "catfish". The person found a phot of an attractive girl that has no recent activity and used it to benefit herself. It's probably a teenager/ bored person that makes fake profiles and talks to random friends. Just because those people are on her profile do not mean they know each other, also, if you look most of those are business people/news reporters. People who play catfish add individuals like that so it looks like they have friends and are legitimate people, it's all part of the plan of talking to people but not meeting them. It's so prevelant mtv has a show and a movie about it called "catfish". Sadly though, deceased soldiers photos are what is being popularly used lately. It's ad and some peoplea re just sick individuals. I think this is someone who was bored/lonely that made a fake profile, used a random pic that's easy to find (Maura's photos are all over the Internet) and added random individuals in a given area. Most photos are profile/shadows of random photos this could be an old man luring in women or a teenage girl just looking to pretend to be someone else online. I doubt there's any real relevance to the photo or the profile.
MrsForman makes a good point. A lot of Alexa Taylor's FB friends are local business/media/political types who probably accept every local friend invite. Still, most of them look like pretty random individuals. In any case, beyond the profile photo, there's nothing on the page to connect Alexa Taylor to Maura Murray. Several things about the FB page look fishy, but it's no crime to use someone else's photo or to make up a FB persona. Whoever Alexa Taylor really is, I think it would be wrong to intrude on her privacy without having evidence of a far more substantial character.
I have a bunch of friends from a message board and a few have profiles like this. It is probably fake - she probably found her photo on Google images googling "pretty nursing student" or something random, not knowing who Maura Murray is.I actually found out after a few months of talking to a girl that she was using a fake picture - her photo popped up if you googled "girl with highlights".
Also, just grasping at straws here...but I'm looking at other missing persons from 2004...Robert Todd Pierce? He was 39 when he disappeared (January 29, 2004) from NYC. Quite a bit older than her - maybe that was why she ran? Who knows. I'll continue looking. I cling to the hope that she is out there somewhere alive. It could also be someone who isn't living, and she just joined his family somewhere.
If it is just some unrelated person using a fake FB photo, then there are a lot of coincidences: a nurse (Maura was a nursing student), a runner (Maura was a runner), a reference to New Hampshire (friend of the guy who complimented her picture).I'm just saying.
Maybe it's someone who has heard of the MM case and knows people are searching and they are playing some sick game to draw attention. There are sadly some strange people online. Also, the person isn't really/no longer employed by the hospital. Kids and bored people looking to joke around or gather attention do all kind of stupid things. What proof do we have that the occupation is even a real one? The person could love in Africa and work as a veterinarian but was bored looking for conversation and made a profile.
I agree that it's a very poorly selected CatFish.
