Paging Maura Murray...

I was contacted the other day by a woman who went to UMass with Maura Murray, who I suspect may have some information about the case. Here's part of the first message:

If you had some sort of proof Maura was alive and well, and needed a life "do over" would you expose her?

We've been going back-and-forth a bit on the particulars, but the simple answer is, no, I would not expose Maura or her whereabouts.

So, Maura, if you're out there and following along, let me again say for the record, if you have reason to hide, I have no interest in exposing your location or current name. I think what everyone wants here is to know you're alive and well. Until then, this disappearance looks like a crime, or even a possible murder.

But how do you go about proving someone is alive and well?

I suppose one could email me a photograph with a current newspaper, some sort of explanation for running away and staying hidden, and details only Maura would know.

I don't think she would contact you directly.
Have you ever made it clear that her safety matters to you?

Of course, Maura's safety is paramount and should be. If we knew she was alive and well, there really would be no more reason for this blog, right?

I can always be reached at jameswrenner@gmail.com

  1. Very interesting. This case has taken a whole new direction in the last couple of weeks. It feels like the pot is beginning to boil.

  2. James Renner is very good at creating uncertainty, suspense, interest etc. I hope it's not all a game and he is really on to something soon. None the less, he's given us hours and hours of entertainment. I think he might really be getting closer to resolving. I don't think he is in this for the money or some big pay off. There are a lot more efficient ways to make money then writing a blog for 10 years and publishing a book.

    1. Hey Jabroni.

As everyone knows, I have a lot respect for Renner. But I don't always agree with him. I think James has to be accountable for what I suspect were at least one ruse in the past, designed to gather more information (the "I'm weeks from solving the case, I know who you left with" thing in late 2013, which smelled to me like a ruse to flush Maura out if his then-being-investigated theories were correct.) As I said to James then, the cost of doing something like that - if indeed it was a ruse - is that it creates a distrust around the people who follow his work on the case most closely, which presumably propagates out into more of a general reputation at large, which in the end is not good for him or anyone.

    3. after reading back over the last few pgs. it looks like there is lots of good info coming over the passed couple months. maybe renner is on to something. is 2015 the year to solve thie case?

    4. If she is alive and reading all the scrutiny about her dad , family and friends has to be getting to her. And if NH cold case really is or possibly re interviewing her friends all now living private lives a decade away from UMASS. And the 11th anniversary is next month. Its not going to take long for Local media and Chronicle to pickup on the case again . When they start runnng down leads on new witness from Butsons and hounding NH cold case detectives , I have a feeling some kind of transparency is coming.

    5. Feel there is more happening than meets the eye behind the scenes. not necessarily what renner has even dug up. this truly is getting more interesting by the day.

    6. My server has pretty sophisticated Anti Virus on it. And a few times i have logged onto the site this week: my Anti Virus is prompting me not to trust the securitys certificate of blogger. More interestingly when i click on properties it does seem like reverse IP signatures have been applied. Im not an expert by any means but it seems like someone is watching and tracking IP address on this blog. I hope its LE.

    7. Wow JJholy, that is an interesting observation you were able to discern. That would be pretty cool if LE were tracking. Would be interesting to see who disappears all of a sudden.

    12. I am really interested what John R. Flower might think about the possibility of LE monitoring this site. I know he knows a lot about the case. John?

      Delete
    13. Two things--
One, don't forget Renner himself was culling IPs at one point (with his fake announcement trap), so it could just be James himself collecting them and perhaps sending them on to LE.
Two, John, due respect, your instigation of Will/John/flower is getting as annoying as his posts. Please consider taking the high road, here.

      Delete
    14. Yuri Ville, yes you're correct. I remember when Renner was tracking IP addresses. I think it's Renner and not LE.

      Delete
    15. Point taken Yuri. John started registering me, using my email, which I put here several times for people to contact me with - for a bunch of subscriptions and newsletters. So I started tweaking him more. He stopped when he realized that by contacting those organizations and notifying them of the abuse of my personal information, I could easily get unmasked IP addresses, and basically prepare the case for the DA in my home county, a far way away from his, to prosecute him for harassment and privacy law violations. Still, you are right, I need to let John (columbo, flower, wolfman, incognito) have his weird fun and ignore him. I will try to do that here out.

    16. Building substantively on Yuri's comment, JJHoly, I wonder if your friend can distinguish between a common site monitoring service (like the one offered by google), which the blog owner would put in place, and some kind of external monitoring scheme that LE might use?

  5. I hope this person who has contacted you has the knowledge she suggests she has. While this is a rather tasty morsel, I suppose you also have to be cautious. Hopefully this person will recognize that you have resource constraints and lots of people contacting you, and offer something to confirm or validate that she has real knowledge that might lead to something. As intriguing as this is, it also smacks of a someone who needs attention and wants to put themselves in the middle without adding any value, like some of our friend/trolls here.

Think about it next month is the aniversary , all the media that kicks up every year. The anxiety she must live with knowing in 30 days multiple media sources little computer tablets prompt them to revisit and follow up on her case. Its possible it could be her. If you believe she is alive.

Just take the potential homicide out of the equation. Im alive i ran away dont need to.give you anymore. I know thats not juicy enough for some people but what do you do at that point ? continue to torcher her dad ? nobody with any kind of class would do that.

    4. Obviously I don't know the man, but Fred comes across as very stoic to me. Whether it's just one of his personality traits or another factor (ie alcoholism). I feel he could handle the scrutiny and remind Maura of his ability, to do so, if she is alive. So....if she is alive and she herself or someone on her behalf, is reaching out, I would conclude it's due to the public announcement of the sighting by the cashier and the need to take the pressure off of her friends. I was beginning to feel that this case would go unsolved. This sounds hopeful. Thanks for keeping it going Mr. Renner.

    5. In 2 to 3 weeks as aniversary approaches multiple media sources will be chasing down NH cold case to give a statement. They will be looking for any family member to clarify Helena Murrays flip flop. They are going to chase Fred to ask him questions on his rememberance of Butstons. Kate and Sara should just go on spring break. I just feel like the timing of Renner revealing there was a sighting and her anniversary is going to kick up a media frenzy.

  6. "Maura Murray is NOT a Missing Person
Maura Murray has the right as every independent adult does to leave with her new boyfriend and start a new life. Maura is living a content and satisfying life in the Province of Quebec. Maura's father Fred Murray never quite forgave her for being asked to leave West Point. It was his personal bragging point that he had two daughters at West Point. Maura's dismissal damaged Fred's ego and he never completely forgave her.
Maura's being asked to leave West Point and all the ensuing criticism by her father was the beginning of a certain line of thought for Maura, culminating in her leaving on Feb 9, 2004 to start a new life unencumbered by the constant criticism of her father. Maura's relationship with William Rausch was near its end. Ac- cording to Maura's sister Kathleen, they were having 'serious problems.' Maura had met someone new, who unlike William Rausch had no West Point connections and therefore was not a constant reminder to her of her failure at West Point.
On the night of February 5 2004 Maura took a break from her job at the security desk at a UMass dormitory to go and briefly get coffee and some food.
Sometime between 12 MN and 1 AM Maura driving her Saturn struck and critically injured the UMass student Petrit Vasi leav- ing him for dead.
Around 1 AM - 1:20 AM Feb 6 Maura had a complete emotional breakdown brought on by this hit and run accident. Maura's breakdown was witnessed by a student who reported this to Maura's supervisor, who then came and saw that Maura needed physical help to get back to her dormitory. The supervisor then physically helped Maura back to her dorm and recommended counseling.
Between 2 and 3 AM on the morning of Sunday Feb 8 Maura had a second motor vehicle accident wrecking her father's new car.
Fred Murray's new car was towed around 3 AM to his Hadley motel room. Maura arrived at Fred's motel at the same time as a passenger in the tow truck. Fred was not happy with Maura to put it mildly. What happened in this motel room we'll never know but I do know for a fact that there was some physical violence on the part of Fred Murray. Fred Murray has a history of domestic violence. The next day Maura left for good.
Maura needed to disguise the evidence of the Petrit Vasi hit and run by staging another accident for the purpose of covering up the damage to her car from the Vasi hit and run. She and her new boyfriend travelled in tandem to Route 112 in NH (He was already in Southern NH). The accident was staged, she left her Saturn, walked down the road to where her boyfriend was waiting for her in his car. She disappeared, her only wish is that she be left alone to live her life in peace. She is happy and contented and just wants to be left alone"

This was posted awhile back, from what was probably a more reliable source than credit has been given too.

I've often wondered if Maura was ever on any dating sites, like a Match.com was pretty popular at the time. If there is a possibility that she met someone there, hence the need for mapquest directions. I'm guessing there may have been an invite to a party out there, an initial meeting of this new love interest, hence probably being accompanied by her girlfriends, and the excessive alcohol that was purchased.

    2. With regard to the planned crash theory, there are a couple things I have never been able to wrap my head around.

When viewed against the facts, the first aspect of the theory which bothers me is the presence of an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. If you were going to ditch a vehicle on a pubic way--which I'm sure must be a criminal offense, albeit a misdemeanor of some sort--then why would you incriminate yourself even further by leaving a cup of wine in the vehicle? If there was some plan to ditch the car, then wouldn't she have hedged her bets a little bit in case something went wrong (e.g., a police officer happened to be passing through and saw her before she could get to the tandem car) and at least not increased the odds of her being investigated for DUI?

Further, if one was to drive up to rural Northern NH to stage an accident and ditch a car, it would seem odd that he or she would do so on a fairly well traveled road. Why not drive it off a dirt road out in the middle of nowhere? Dirt roads to the middle of nowhere are very easy to find in Northern NH.

In a larger context, the car could have sat for days in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart or similar store in Massachusetts of Southern N.H. before being noticed. True, just leaving the car somewhere would not do anything to disguise evidence of a prior crash. But, doing something like that would have bought Maura even more time to "escape" before her car was found.

Again, I try to keep my mind open to irrational behavior. However, if she headed up to Northern N.H. as the first step in escaping her life, she had to have put at least a little forethought into what she was doing. The location of the accident and presence of an open container of alcohol inside it just don't seem indicative of a staged crash.

    3. Seriously, seriously doubt that someone like Maura would've been on Match at that time. There was still a stigma around using the Internet to meet people in 2004 and someone Maura's age would have likely only turned to it out of desperation if they had no luck meeting anyone of the opposite sex, which was clearly not an issue for her.

      Delete
    4. Assuming Renner's posts about her sexual propensities are accurate (my spidey senses somewhat doubt them for some reason), I think Match.com would not be a place you would find her. But she might have been online a lot around sexuality, as she clearly was leading some kind of double life with the haloed student athlete harboring a confused and troubled bulimic young woman, abuser of alcohol, who'd had legal problems, and who might have had issues with sex addiction.

      ~ John Green

      Delete
    5. I don't disagree about her supposed "propensities," John, but I do know that college kids experiment. You can be a rather vanilla person and still get caught up in a moment/series of encounters without that informing your entire sexuality. I don't think she'd have been on Match, either. There were plenty of handsome single men around Amherst, and being on a team, she had social access to many other teams' athletes, as well.

As for the person in this entry, I also "went to school" with Maura, technically, hence why I continue to read about it and follow the case. That doesn't mean I know anything at all about what happened to her. Unless this person can be verified as a friend, I think we should take what she says with several large grains of salt.

    6. Ms. Hathaway--

      Well said.

I think it is always a little bit dicey to place too much value on things like her personality in general, and sexuality in particular. None of us really know her. From reading about the case, the most I can say is that she had a reputation for being intelligent, but it appears she also had her share of troubles. The same is true for a good many young people.

It is certainly not wrong or a waste of time to consider what role, if any, her personality played in what happened. All I am saying is that it is easy to get pretty far afield when trying to draw a connection between her disappearance and a rumored orgy, etc.

    8. In fairness, I should note that I have made posts in the past where I discussed my impression of Maura as a person who struck me as being a little bit on the unpredictable side.

But, as I recall, I only relied on this to the extent that I thought it indirectly supported the argument that the explanation for Maura's trip North might not be the simplest one possible, e.g., the trip was an attempt to get away from what appeared to be a rather chaotic life for few days.

Basically, though, I don't have the slightest idea what the trip was about. I think something bad happened to her, but I have no idea what brought her up to the North Country. To meet someone? To pick something up? To make an escape to a new life? Or, was it really just an attempt to get away for a little while and collect her thoughts? Among all of those possible reasons, there is not one which I think stands out to me as being a clear favorite.

The only other reason which has been discussed which I tend to slightly disfavor is the idea that she was headed to a party or social gathering of some sort. It would have had to have been one heck of a party to warrant driving from Amherst to the North Country on a Monday night in February, especially if her car was running poorly.

Anyways, I just don't want to sound like a hypocrite when I say it is best to be careful when discussing her personality.

    1. I respectively disagree. She was described as an atttractive girl a slightly older wealthier man could be taking care of her. She was known to use credit cards that were not hers. She was resourcefull. She has friends and family.possibly helping her. Her dad was once quoted he truly believes somebody grabbed her and she is no longer with us. If thats the case why not be transparent about 5 strange days leading to her disappearance? As the 11th aniversary approaches i too feel new developments will comeout. Every media outlet and investigator reporter is going to pick up the story again. if she is alive what shes about to do again via media to her.friends and family has to be gut wrenching. Im reserving my opinions if she is alive or dead till after this years media circus frenzie.

  10. I still go back to the thought process...if Maura was planning on returning to UMASS whether to leave school, just move out of the dorm, move back home or move somewhere to change her clinical site(nursing student) than she would have asked for help at the crash site I.E. Butch Atwood, the neighbors or walk back to the Swiftwater store to use a phone since there was no cell phone coverage. If Sara and Kate where with her, she would have had to call them to come get her, if they somehow got separated. So if they did not pick her up than who did " the local Dirt Bag" or was there a fourth person with them or at least with Maura who picked her up. Sara or Kate may have not know about it

  15. Sorry, Miss Understood. I should have let it lie. His screen name on Topix had been Detective Columbo. Here he initially went by "Will I am Incognito." His real name is John. Some over the years have speculated that he was somehow involved in Maura's case, but I seriously doubt that. He was the guy polluting any online discussion of the Maura Murray case with attacks on Renner and others. Recently he invented another screen name "Flower Child" who was a big fan of Will. I was simply poking fun at him for this. I thought it was funny that both his screen names disappeared from the discussion (and Will's blogger profile disappeared) right after JJHoly observed through technological means the not-all-that-surprising fact that LE is likely monitoring this site. Really though, he is just some dude who lives in NH who has fallen on some hard times. I watched a few videos he made and a fund raising campaign he went on using Twitter, and I felt bad about how I have been going at him. But then he attempted something outside of this forum to annoy me, which is illegal though really not that harmful, so I am kicking a dead horse a bit, with hopes that horse never comes back for more.

    2. You are right. But if you knew what he did to me - outside this forum - after I at least tried to show him some respect - you'd see my perspective. But you are right. He's already made a fool of himself and I don't need to say anything else about him. Hopefully he either stays gone or comes back with the intention, which widely defines the group here, to participate in meaningful discussion. In that case, I know I would be positive toward him and I suspect others would too.

As for what he has against Renner, he claims it has to do with a post Renner did about him. But really, he has been doing it for years, long before Renner made that post. In fact, John brought that on himself, as his behavior aroused a lot of speculation about him. Moreover, he once angrily denied that he was columbo and that the "wolf man" (a gig he had at a tourist spot in NH) was the same person. He has since admitted that in the course of conversation, even though he remains angry at Renner. (Frankly, I am not sure if I have that sage entirely correct ... I welcome anyone correcting me... I did not follow that event that closely).

I myself believe he might be a part of a mysterious disinformation machine that seems to include at least some of the Murrrays. He has posted lots of obnoxious comments over the years under literally dozens of screen names.

"Here's a bit from the Seventeen article, the only time Sara spoke to the media:

"About an hour later, Maura arrived at her friend Sara Alfieri's dorm to hang out. For the next three hours, Maura, Sara, and a couple of friends sat around talking and listening to music while drinking Skyy Blue malt mixed with a little bit of wine..."

I'm not a big drinker, so I Googled Skyy Blue malt, and they are blue wine coolers. What a coinkydink.

    4. The sighting by the cashier was supposedly reported to her supervisor at Butstons. Fred also investigated it himself . Reported he got upset when they did not have video footage. This was all way before the Seventeen Article was written. It was early on. It definetly was reported now whether details were added over the years afterwards who knows. But it appears it was reported early on in the investigation.

Once I have the posting IP addresses/unmasked (which is going to require a subpoena for some companies but not others), I will be able to put a practically completed case with my citizen complaint in front of the DA. John will be very sorry when he receives a criminal summons from a King County, Washington court for harassment and privacy law violations. 1. Interesting question JJHoly. During Fred's case to get investigative materials, the DA opposing it stated that Maura was suspected of involvement various crimes. The one I remember was arson. The documents are among the one's in Renner's library, I believe, or the subject of post. In a way, that does mean anything, though, because that was simply the officials making the legal case that they did not have to release the materials. By stating as much as they could make out about crimes potentially being involved, they put their best case out as to why they did not have to turn the materials over. Still though, it raises the question of whether - if the CCU knew she was alive and well and voluntarily gone - that would be the end of their case.

    2. If LE knows that Maura is alive, then she is cleared (or at least no evidence linking) of the Vasi hit. Otherwise LE would've gone after her. Do you know any details of a suspected arson case? A vehicle, home, storefront, other structure, etc?

      Delete
    3. ARSON. that is a new one, where did this info come from. did this happen at umass or in nh? this case totally baffles me every day.

    4. Miss Understood. As mentioned in my comment, there was either a Renner post discussing the documents and hearing around Fred's attempt to get the documents related to her investigation. Please be sure to understand the context within my comment: at that hearing, given the legal standard at hand, LE had incentive to cite as many possible "open" investigatory lines as possible to resist turning over their records and as such probably threw out everything they could think of.

My point is simply this: IF there is any legitimate and active investigatory line related to Maura's disappearance that involves some other crime, they may not close her case or acknowledge that she is alive, even if they know it or at some point discover it.

      ~ John Green

      Delete
    5. Shannon,

Good point about the fact that if LE knew she was alive (and where she was) and they had some case against her for something, they would have gone after her. Buttressing that, if they had an important case against her, it is possible that - to toll the statute of limitations, and depending on the specifics of the law of the state of New Hampshire - they would have sought an indictment or filed charges in abentia.

I don't know anything about an arson case. I just know that it was one of the words that appeared in the supporting evidence against Fred's request for the release of the investigative documents. Again, the prosecutor's office had legal incentive to make the case involve as many open investigations as possible to avoid releasing the documents.

I will see if I can find the link and post it here.

    7. John,

Maura was not suspected of being involved in arson. The DA stated that in the course of the investigation into the disappearance of Maura, they uncovered evidence of other crimes. Arson was one of them, but at no point did they attribute those crimes to Maura. They didn't exclude it either, but the transcripts always read to me like these were crimes unrelated to the disappearance. The integrity of these other investigations were specifically what the DA wished to keep out of Fred's hands, as in regards to "other" crimes, he was just another guy on the street. They could not separate the uncovered evidence from the Maura investigation, so Fred was refused access.

In the past John, you made it a stated goal of yours to stop the spread of rumor and outright falsifications. I only bring this up since this arson issue seems to be an incredible breach of that vow. I am curious if that is not important to you any more or was it simply an oversight? You fought very hard to establish your credibility here and elsewhere in the past. I would hate to see you mess it up by making flip comments that sound like fact.

      Yours truly,

  19. Yes but it would rule out foul play , take homicide off the table , leave her family and friends alone finally. Any other crimes , statute of limitations to charge her must apply. Plus i think living 11 years turning her life around not getting into trouble would work in her favor as leinancy. However i dont think shes obligated to say anything but i am alive here is proof. Im no longer missing or victim of homicide. leave my friends and family alone. The state would need to re classify her case reissue investigation on other crimes , check statute of limitations, then try to find her and prosecute her. Where she probablly would get leniancy for turning her life around in 11 years. Nevermind counter lawsuits by the family for initial botched investigation not releasing records etc. And if she really did hit Vasi at this point it would be hard to prove and im sure he would welcome any proceeds from book deals and publicity from a go fund me page publicity would bring. Seems like a lot of tax payers dollars already wasted i dont see NH re classifing other crimes and prosecuting her. Forget about text book law. Go back to just right vs wrong. If she proves she is alive and well no other explanation of who what why and how ? would that be good enough? Its the right thing to do for her Friends and Family who have been through hell. To pursue more answers in my opinion is a witch hunt to satisfy a human nature need for a good story. The window of opportunity for her to come out is good now. Its before the 11th aniversary and it would be undershadowed in local media with the case of AAron Hernandez ( NE Football TE murder trial ). I just think a lot of you would have trouble with an ending like : Thats it????????

    ReplyDelete

    1. JJholy,

I agree. I think many people here would have a problem with that ending. This is a weird missing person case, because it seems like many supporters have crossed over from wanting to help her to wanting to punish her. If I were Maura (and alive) I wouldn't be scared of the law or media whatsoever, but I'd be terrified of some of the people here! (generally speaking) I could see some banning together to confront her unexpectedly - a surprise group ambush! I can hear it now... "I donated $50 to put your picture in the newspaper in Canada, the least you can do is give me an explaination!" And "I have spent so much time searching for you that I can never get back!"

I don't believe for a second that Maura started a new life, but if she did, she must have had a REALLY good reason. I don't think she owes us any answers. Some here would argue "Maura took time away that we could have spent searching for women who were actually abducted!" ... But the same people who believe Maura is alive and in hiding wake up everyday, and choose to put more time and energy into Maura's case because they find it more fascinating than the others... not because they are actually trying to rescue a woman from harm.

I just hope that if poor Maura was murdered her body is found before the book comes out with all kinds of theories that ruin her name and memory. There seems to be a little "evidence" supporting every single theory and possibility that puts Maura in a bad light, but a lot of these theories contradict each other, and they can't possibly ALL be true. A lot of the "evidence" must just be meaningless coincidences. There are stories tying suspicion to practically every person Maura ever crossed paths with. Again, they can't ALL be involved!

I truly believe that if Maura came home tomorrow, the media would see Maura as the VICTIM she was, and not the villain she's become here.

      Delete
    2. Good post Kel P. We here are not owed any answers. My only hang up is that if she is responsible for Vasi's hit and run, it be known. Of course if she was murdered, the perp(s) be brought to justice, which can go without saying.

I would of said anything too to help my kid. With everything going on in the media the window of opportunity , all the atmospheric conditions are right for this kind of closure on this 11th aniversary. As stated before it would be 2nd to the Aron Hernandez trial. She also would be helping families like Brianna Maitlands and Abigal Hernandez , it helps rule out possibilities in other cold cases. I feel its possible shes alive. But if she doesnt take advantage of this window time frame . Im probablly going to change my mind she is no longer with us. 3. Lots of people wait for high profile cases to distract media attention. In the 60s a swindler named Tino DeAngelis practically took down Wall Street and the American Exoress Company. The only reason why its not more commonly known because JFK was shot in Dallas. Since then smart attorneys know when media attention is unavoidable and they try to time it right so it is a secondary story. Maura is from New England, Aron Hernandez played for the NE patriots , the media is going to swarm coverage of his story over hers.

      Delete
    4. What media?! Last year was the 10 year anniversary, and there were only a few articles! It was shockingly understated. Most people have never even heard of Maura. The last thing she would have to worry about is an angry media frenzy. If anything, the local news would do a short little heart felt segment like "Missing Woman Reunites With Family" and roll footage of them hugging and crying. They'd say Maura is still too traumatized to talk about what happened. Then we'd probably never hear about it again. Maura may be famous on this blog, but in the real world she is practically unmentionable. There's just so much built up hype about her small and fixable problems.

      Delete
    5. Miss Understood-- With due respect to your viewpoint, I think classifying Maura's re-appearance (for lack of a better term) as "world news" is a bit of an overstatement.

The case has a fair amount of interest on a regional basis, and there would probably be a few items on local television and print mediums if Maura were to emerge. If news was slow at the time she reappeared, then it might even warrant 20 seconds on a national morning TV show, but nothing more.

Might a television or nationally syndicated print journalist want to interview her? Sure, but she would be under no obligation to accept the invitation and interest would die out after too long.

Beyond that, though, I don't think there would be a good deal of publicity.

Of course, none of the foregoing would apply if Maura emerged and simultaneously had a tale to tell which was comparable to what happened to the 3 ladies who were held in a Cleveland basement. But things like that are the exception, not the rule.

In other words, if all Maura did was run off with a boyfriend, it really will not be all that juicy to anyone besides locals and those of us involved in the blogsphere.

  22. I'm also curious about how James would announce if she were found. And how it would affect sales of his book if he made an announcement before it was published, or if it had a “that's it?!” ending as jjholy mentioned above. I'd still want to read it because this case has confounded me for years. But lots of people might lose interest.

One aspect of the case that has been bugging me lately is the link to Beauharnois, Quebec. It was one of the places James visited last year to post flyers, along with Montreal, Sherbrooke and Quebec City. Does anyone know specifically why Beauharnois was included? The only thing I've found from my digging was an old Wikipedia entry for Beauharnois that said it was rumored to be where Maura was living, but I read that last year and it's been deleted. I can't find anything else on it.

Did Maura speak French? I can see how she'd blend into a larger city in the province, since there would be more people who spoke both French and English. But Beauharnois is predominantly Francophone. Wouldn't she stick out like a sore thumb if she didn't speak French fluently?

Also, how would she have crossed into Canada? If she used her ID at a checkpoint, surely detectives would have investigated this by now. Do they keep records of travelers crossing at the border checkpoints? I'd think so. If she used a fake ID, how easy would it be to spot one by a border agent? I'm sure they are well-trained in this and see it all the time. Could she have crossed someplace other than a checkpoint? Is that even possible, without being detected?

So many questions in this case. I'd love to hear others' thoughts on this.

    8. Interesting comment TKRA. Renner merely acknowledging that she is alive and well (or that he has been persuaded of it) would possibly have two results: (1) energize others lurking around the case to keep looking for her via their internet keys, which in turn, you would think would dissuade her, if alive, from letting Renner known; and (2) put the CCU in an odd position of either announcing that the case was closed, further spurring such a danger to Maura and therefore further making her reluctant to do it, or leaving it open, which would encourage a lot more speculation, particularly given the discussions in court when Fred was trying to get the investigative records, during which the DA probably over sold that there were crimes being investigated that Maura might have been involved in.

    8. Hey JJholy and Miss Understood, enjoying the conversation with you today... It's my first day posting :)

I really feel for Fred. I think he is just a really private person. My Dad has always been exceptionally private about the most meaningless things! But for whatever reason, it matters to him. I would hate for something like this to happen to my father. It's hard enough to lose a child, but to be blamed for the rest of your life, and have people posting all kinds of embarrassing and unrelated information about you online?

My Dad would be MORTIFIED if he was losing his house, and would die if people were talking about it on the internet (Like they did with Fred here)... I could see my Dad trying everything to hide that, especially if it had nothing to do with the case. Many men feel like failures over money problems, and Fred seems like the over-achiever way-too- hard on himself type!

Heck, maybe Fred couldn't afford to take out $4000 to buy Maura a car, so he borrowed the money from a relative. He was too embarrassed to tell the police, so he made up a story about going to several ATMs. He knew the money issue had nothing to do with Maura's disappearance, so he saw no harm in lying. Maybe it's something as simple and innocent as that with Fred! Not every super private person has something to hide... I know my Dad doesn't!

I'm sure Fred did chew Maura out for driving drunk and crashing his car though. What parent wouldn't? She could have been killed! Any loving parent would have been furious, But then she disappeared before they could make up like most fathers and daughters would. He will never forgive himself for that. I don't thing he needs a guilt trip from others on top of his own, Ya know? :)

In my opinion, you have that time line wrong. Fred was offered a lot of support and help in many quarters, including by Renner. When he started doing strange things - very strange things - and equivocating, people wandered. It led to some inquiry which has led to substantive indications that he knows more than he is saying and believes that he is in charge of the investigation. Fred really brought the scrutiny on himself, in my opinion. Of course, with you knowing him personally, you may have a complete different take and exposure to facts that I do not have.

  24. Whatever proof a person could provide of Maura's existence would have to be very convincing in order for me to buy it.

I strongly suspect there are people who know details about her childhood, or the more mundane aspects of her life, which would probably be used as part of verifying her identity. In other words, I do not put it beyond someone to try playing Maura Murray. A person might do this just for the fun of it, or to purposefully decrease public interest in the case, particularly on the various internet blogs devoted to it.

Some of the most effective information for verifying her existence must be in the investigative files which have thus far not been released. Until there is a substantial, publicized change in the way the police view the investigation--e.g., something comes forward strongly indicating they no longer view her as a missing person--I'd tend to be skeptical.

Thinking the cold case people are concentrating the investigation more on her being deceased than alive and hiding some place. and also chatter going on in Woodville area tends to point toward that as well. recent happenings up there have begun to rattle the cages of some of those involved with Maura's disappearance. should be interesting what comes out in the next couple months.

    1. Could you elaborate on what you mean when you say cages have been rattled? What recent happenings? What involved persons are you referring to?

    2. Yes Miss Understood, I am very curious about this too. I would be grateful if you would elaborate on this as well as my questions just above.

    3. i can only say that certain people were arrested who may hold the clues to the disappearance of maura. these are locals who lived in the area at the time and were of shady character to say the least.

    4. I do not believe there is any substance to Miss Understood's cryptic postings. I live here too and have heard no such rumblings. I know there was and is a certain group of people who from the start had their eye on some locals for no reason other than how they lived and how they looked. This is just more of the same, from what I can tell.

    5. Agreed. I'm a local as well; moved away for a few years and came back. One thing which never changes is that the police are very secretive about how they operate. They are extremely wary of tipping their hand, they are not big into engaging the public, and they do not leak information.

With most of the high profile cases in Northern NH (which are, for obvious reasons, few and far between) one moment it seems like the authorities are clueless, and then a couple hours later they've surrounded someone's house and made an arrest. Look at how things went down with Nate Kibby.

In other words, rumors in the community are usually without merit. If the community knows about something, it is something the police have already determined to be valueless.

    1. Yes, well said. From talking with a person who is involved in business dealings in Quebec, my understanding is that it is difficult to imitate how native Quebecers speak French. This is not to say that a person who learned French in an American school and was good at it could not get by. Maybe such a person could, over time, reach the point where they sounded like a native. But I don't think that process would happen overnight, and it might not happen at all.

    2. I read somewhere that Maura knew a bit of German, probably high school level. I think it was on one of the first posters put out about her disappearance. I doubt that she could speak French, too, especially with a Canadian-French accent. If she happened to be in Quebec, which I doubt, she would have to try to blend in as a U.S.expat.

  27. Depending on where in Quebec we are discussin, she may not even need much French. One could easily get by in Montreal with very little to none. Just some food for thought from a Canadian :)

    1. True. Further, it would be much easier for someone in Maura's shoes-e.g., a person classified as missing in the USA but by no means subject to an international manhunt--to blend-in in an urban area.

Although my longtime preferred theory (abduction resulting in her death) remains unchanged, I think the least likely possibility is that she is alive in a rural area in Quebec.

    2. Can you guys please tell me about the proof she went to Quebec? That blog comment about it in the beginning was clearly a troll having fun.

I know one woman shown a poster thought she recognized her, but that happens in every missing person case. False sightings are so common! People think back of other random people they've seen, and the image gets meshed with the missing person picture.

So aside from that, was there any other "evidence" before Renner ran to Canada?

And what did the poker player, Dave, have to do with it?

    3. I was the victim of a violent crime once, and I couldn't properly identify the man to save my life! I thought every single Mexican, Asian, Hawaiian, and Mixed Black man was him everywhere I went! My mind would morph the memory I had of him with the new person I was looking at. Thankfully I had enough common sense to realize what was happening and never accused any of them! Memory is such a subjective thing...

    4. Angsellis,

I am with you. While I was intrigued by the Quebec possibilities, it always seemed like its basis was, ultimately, Topix chatter.

  28. So, Miss Understood, a couple questions for you. I think I posted these elsewhere but things get lost in these in these complex post and comment threads.

    (1) You noted you were on the searches with Fred early on. Could you talk more about that and what some of your observations were? I am sure you must have some interesting observations about Fred and the searches. And, actually, you must have met John Wolfman Flower Columbo Smith because he was hanging around the searches at first, before - from what I heard - he was asked to leave for some reason. (I don't know that that is true, but that is what I heard).

    (2) I am surprised by something - and I ask this respectively - with knowledge of the case going way back to being involved in the searches, what after all this time inspired you to begin posting here now, eleven years? Given your polite and collegial manner, I am doubting that you are a troll who posts under a lot of screen names. So, why have you spoken up now after all these years?

Interested to hear your thoughts. Many thanks in advance.

    1. i was there during several searches and noticed a very professional team of dogs and their handlers. they checked several areas over those times and were very thorough. i met columbo as he was there everytime and totally involved with the private investigators and working with them because he knew the area. think he is from Franconia. not sure about any issues with him but he sure seemed very capable and had knowledge of the area and the locals. think he stated at one time he worked for the police in Littleton.

i am here because a friend told me that things were happening in Woodville and that the blog was getting lots of activity. used to come here in the beginning and read but never made a peep. just seeing what was going on. started reading and then the next thing i knew was posting. so here i am.

cannot go into things to deep though.....sorry.

    1. Thanks Miss Understood. I got your email and responded. I appreciated your response above. I was not looking for anything beyond that.

One follow up: to your knowledge, given that there was a belief at the time (based on what I later learned was deceptive evidence - the dog track) that Maura went east upon exiting the car, was the search thorough in the areas immediately south of the accident scene; that is, along Old Peters Road?

    1. And thanks again for answering my questions. I hope, at least, that you can answer my follow up (above) about whether the region south of the scene (along Old Peters) was checked as carefully as the region east (along 112), given the then belief that the dogs indicated she went east, which we now know was not a valid piece of evidence.
