Last Chance to Contribute to the Book

We've begun the editing process for the book and soon there will be a final draft and this will be set it stone. It looks like it will be in bookstores sometime next Spring/Summer (I'll have a date, soon).

If you have something important that you would like to share, some piece you've been keeping that might help the investigation if shared with readers, now's kind of the last chance to come forward.

  1. An appendix with color photos of the car, crash site, dorm, crash reports, affidavits, arrest records, maps, phone records, a list of unanswered questions that are relevant, etc. would make a great addition and help any potential sleuths help in the search and maybe jog some memories.

  2. I was looking at some of the photos of Maura's car and it looks like it's red wine thrown on the windshield and not a crack? Or was it an outline of the cracks so the public could see it? To me it looks like red wine thrown on it.

    1. Check out paragraph three on the third page of the accident report. It strongly implies that red wine was splattered on the inside of the windshield, and I don't think I'm stretching things when I say that a good many posters on this site think that is exactly what happened. The accident report is available under the "Documents" link on the left side of the blog.

  3. I came across an article that said Maura's friend Sara worked at the UMASS security office to. I wonder if she is the one that called or came by and informed maura of something that made her very upset at her job.
Has anyone went and talked with other students that lived near Maura in the dorms or lived in the dorms where the party supposedly was? Not her best friends but just students that lived there during the time frame? Because people do talk among themselves even if they don't know you we'll.
Also I read an article about UMASS and how they were turning students that got in trouble on campus into confidential informants. Could this of been Maura. She seems like a perfect candidate.

    1. The possibility that Maura was a confidential informant (CI) was discussed in a post on 10/1/14. I'm not aware of any evidence which directly supports the idea that Maura was a CI. Thus, I have not spent a great deal of time thinking about the case from the CI angle. That said, everyone (including me) has theories which rely on inferences and educated guesses . . . so no offense intended if your thoughts are to the contrary.

  4. I find the phone call really strange... one would think that as high profile as this case has been, that whoever called her has to know that people are looking for her. How come no one has ever come forward and said, "I am the one who called Maura that night before she disappeared, and the phone call was about...". I can only speculate as to why no one has come forward, but I have to believe that the person must have some inside details about her fate, otherwise, why not come forward and clear the air?

And didn't the police thing to look up phone records to see who it was that called? I just feel like this mysterious phone call, that many have speculated about, is the key to all of this. And the fact that no one has ever come forward with any info about it leads me to believe that the caller knows something.

  5. I learned about this case when I was Maura's age, also in school. The only reason I would be this upset/this ready to up and leave my life would be if I were pregnant. Has anyone explored this angle?

    1. Honestly after reading this stuff I thought about the pregnancy possibility and I wondered if there where any of those "controversial" clinics in the town she was headed to. Heck the money her dad gave her might have been intended for, let's call it, a "minor procedure." Also she had packed a lot of wine, just saying.

    2. The pregnancy thing has been a big part of this story.

-Some goofy boards have wondered if she was taking a fertility drug
-Maura's computer had been used to search for terms related to 'drinking while pregnant' presumably indicating that Maura had been drinking without realizing she was pregnant.

    3. The possibility that Maura was pregnant is definitely an interesting one. But, if she was looking for an abortion clinic, it really did not make much sense for her to travel to Northern NH. I've never heard of any facilities providing abortion services in Conway or Lincoln (the two major towns in NH along Rt.112).* More broadly speaking, I am unaware of any such facilities north of the Manchester/Concord area in general.*

Regardless, I strongly suspect she could could have found an abortion clinic somewhere in southern New England which was closer to campus, but far enough away that her chances of being recognized would have been minimal.

Of course, one could always make the argument that her trip had something to do with a "back alley" abortion of some sort. But, here again, one would think that something like that would be a heck of a lot easier to procure in an urban area in Southern New England (Boston, Hartford, etc.) than the backwoods of NH.

For me, what all of the foregoing boils down to is that, if (key word) her trip was related to an attempt to abort a pregnancy, then it seems most likely that she was trying to cause a miscarriage by drinking copious amounts of booze. This might well explain why she crashed the car, but it does not necessarily explain what, or who, actually caused her disappearance.

*If any poster has info to the contrary, please let us know.

    4. Original poster here -

My thoughts were a little bit different from yours with the pregnancy thought, when I said the only reason I would want to disappear at that age would be if I were pregnant. If she were by any small chance pregnant, Maura could have planned to disappear to keep the child without the shame of being a pregnant college student to all the people she knew and loved (including her fiance). That is why I would want to disappear - to figure out what to do (even if that doesn't mean aborting the child).

I wonder if birth records in any of the cities James thinks Maura ended up in could shed any light. Mothers around Maura's age and physical description (with no health insurance) having children ~ 7 months from the disappearance with no father on the birth certificate. It is an improbable thought, but I wonder if this theory was ever explored in depth.

  7. Just a thought about one of Fred's statements. When he talks about "a dirtbag grabbed her" could this be a new boyfriend and he refers to him as a dirtbag for taking his Maura away. He's not saying anything because it could get Maura in trouble.
Also on the Montel Show he says
"what frustrates me, so much now is when the police got there she was no more than 200 yards down the street, all they had to do was drive down and around the corner , they could of grabbed her, and Maura would be here with me now. But they didn't do that and she isn't here with ME now.
Did he know she was only 200 yards down the road? Say she was seen an hour before the wreck with two friends is this part of the story they told him?
Him saying with me, why not with us? Isn't her friends and family missing her to? Just seems like you would say " with us". I don't know what you would say in the situation of a missing loved one but it just sounds odd to me.

    1. Good point. Fred seems like he's hiding something for sure. A lot of people seem to be hiding info, actually.

  8. Did Fred still have his rental car? If so, did anyone check the mileage on it to see if there was extra mileage? Don't the rental company's keep records of the mileage of where it's at when you leave and where it is when you bring it back.
I know rental places have gps on there vehicles in case something happens, did Fred's have GPS on it?
I wonder if Maura purposely left the accident papers so they could be given to her dad. If not, then I think they were left behind on accident.
I also wonder if Fred knew she was running away and was ok with it at the time but then realized Maura wasn't going to call him either. When she left, she didn't look back.
I do believe this is how maura and who ever wanted it to look like. Many clues and no answers.
I don't understand why her friends and family wouldn't talk ( at least clear up some things) unless what there hiding could hurt them or maura.
Was maura still on probation at the time of her disappearance? If so, could she get in trouble 11 years later for skipping out?

  9. My husband worked for many years in management related to collision repair. He has an MBA and has worked with a local attorney as an expert concerning auto accidents. I showed him the photo of Maura's car and what was reported in terms of the accident. None of what I showed him added up.

As for the comments I have read about Maura being a nursing student and possibly taking opiods from the hospital, I find this difficult to occur in most hospitals. As an RN in critical care for years, all meds, but especially pain medications are strictly monitored.

  11. There's s a reason Kate and Sara won't talk and can't remember anything. What is it?
Could Fred been of been driving in the first wreck and maura covered for him? Is that why she had to leave so suddenly or is it all just a lie? Was there a party they attended or was the party Maura, Kate, Sara, and Fred discussing a plan? Im sure there was a party in someone's dorm room but did they attend? Other partygoers would be able to confirm it unless its a lie. Why did Fred pick Kate up in the back parking lot and not the two spots that were normally dropoff/ pickup. Maybe so he wouldn't be seen picking her up? Was she the tadem driver? Was that night/ early morning a first attempt? What couldn't wait that Maura had to leave and go to her dads room at 2:30/3:00 in morning. Could it be Fred was there to and couldn't stay the night at the dorms? Miracously she left her phone in someone else's dorm room. How did she call triple a or the police. Who made the call to police on first accident?
Boxes packed, note on top from bf about infidelity, having to please everyone around her, 2 car wrecks, friends that don't remember, dad that has lied about what he knows, credit card fraud, leaving West Point, possible pegnant , living near the person she stole from ( most of been uncomfortable) maura probably felt like the "walls were closing in" and needed a fresh start. Maybe she thought she would go to jail. Whether she became someone else we don't know.
Something happened that was the final straw.
Why can the witnesses remember seeing her walk around the car but didn't see her leave. Could it be everyone looked away at the right moment, they saw but are scared to say or have told police but kept quite so no harm to them, or they were paid to keep quite.
Did they see a red truck too?
I think the three most likely scenarios are 1. Started new life 2. Succumbed to the elements or 3. Committed suicide somewhere.
Was Maura's breakdown just because life was being very tough for her and Was having a mental breakdown. Maybe there was no phone call that upset her.

  12. I am perplexed about the fact that Maura was searching the internet about drinking and the effects on a fetus.....Then I think about the email she sent to her professor about a death in the family......Do you suppose if she was pregnant that she was trying to drink herself into a miscarriage? Or like others have mentioned maybe was heading to get an abortion? It would make sense her claiming a death in the family that being the unborn child? Sounds like Maura was severely depressed possibly even Bi-Polar. Then I think about the A-Frame and the blood that was found I thought it was sent out to be tested......it is my understanding that never was done and the police no longer have that evidence?

  13. Could the phone call she received while at her post been about Petrit Vasi? He was found unconscious in the road an hour before she got the call.....could she have been the one that hit him with her car maybe? Do we know what time she started her shift? That would be the last straw to set her over the edge? So much about this case is mysterious!

  14. Another Question : Why Wasn't Maura's Missing Persons Case ever on "Unsolved Mysteries" ???? The one show that may bring answers.......I heard the Police feel that she met with Foul Play......so can anyone tell me WHY one of the most perplexed Missing Person's case in History has not been on this show???

  15. It has been said that Maura called a fellow nursing student the day she left campus and disappeared. The family has said that Maura was all the time borrowing scrubs and most likely was trying to return them to this person on the day she disappeared. Is this nursing student Martha Nagle? I read on one of your blogs that she was in nursing school with Maura and when you contacted her she said she couldn't speak about it because she's related through marriage. Could she know what happened to Maura and where she is or at least what happened Feb. 4, 2004 and what lead Maura to leave?
If Maura was catching rides with classmates to her clinicals, which classmates were they? Has anyone spoke with who she was riding with?
I wonder if Maura talked about what was going on in her life and how she was feeling on some of those rides to clinicals.

Did the police go through her belongings at her dorm room before they released it to the family and before they retrieved some of the stuff back?

    1. A nursing student who had the same classes with Maura said that Maura was very quiet and did not hang out with any of the people in her nursing classes. She kept to herself. I think I read that in the UMass newspaper.

  16. Didn't either Sara or Kate say that the night of the party Kate and a male walked Maura back to her room? If so, who was this male and was he spoken to?

  17. Maura had been on winter break and hadn't been back at school to long. How did Maura travel back home for winter break? How did she get from where she stayed on Winter break back to school? Did she drive her car back and forth?
Also, has the angle of Maura being in a credit card ring been fully investigated? Could she of been involved in one and something happened where she needed to disappear and disappear fast.
I wonder if Maura could of been using Adderall. I know it's popular with college kids. Some say it helps them stay up late so they can study. From Maura's phone records it seems like she was up late quite a bit.
