*** UPDATED *** Did Alden Olson's videos inspire Vester Lee Flanagan?

*** UPDATE ***

It appears the Google profile purporting to be Vester Lee Flanagan was either hacked today or it was a troll who switched his profile after the shootings last week to make it appear that he was Flanagan.

Everybody lies.

***************

For years, I have been trying to motivate Massachusetts D.A. Steve Gagne to do something about Alden Olson, the man who continues to taunt the Murray family with YouTube videos suggesting that he killed her in 2004. Olson posted video of my son on YouTube and has threatened me directly. Gagne knew Olson had a history of threatening violence in Mass -- Olson threatened to murder members of his own family a few years ago in Chatham.

But Gagne would not press charges. Olson had deleted the YouTube video of my son (though Gagne could easily have retrieved it from the service). When I asked him what would happen if he did nothing, and Olson showed up on my doorstep with a gun, he sarcastically told me that then they would have a pretty good case. He suggested Olson was harmless. Now we know that isn't true.

Take a look at this screen shot from Olson's famous "Anniversary" video, the first video he used to taunt investigators and suggest he killed Maura Murray. One of the top comments is from Vester Lee Flanagan, the man who murdered news reporter Alison Parker and photojournalist Adam Ward on live TV last week.

Flanagan filmed the murders and uploaded it to the Internet to taunt the world before committing suicide.

I wonder where he got that idea?

This is the exact video where Olsen is laughing maniacally. Vester Lee comments midway down.

  2. James,

Is the account confirmed to have belonged to Flanagan? I can't check right now, but my initial reaction is that this is a troll. I believe it's relatively simple to change your account name and picture on Google/YouTube and I think that appears retroactively.

There are a number of people who comment on this case who like to invoke the names and situations of other criminals. Until the account is confirmed as Flanagain, I'm inclined to believe we're being trolled.

    1. Tyler- You're exactly right. I just viewed a cached version of it, and it was under a different name / photo before the murder of the anchor's. Also, "Vester"'s account is still active- it just posted a comment on a video several minutes ago. 100% a troll.

  3. Wow. What an amazing find, James. I don't remember the last time I was as sickened and mortified as I was by the events last week. As an aspiring journalist, and of course you as a very well established one, it's impossible to even comprehend that you're going to see what we saw watching a morning show in a small town in Virginia. That said, I think that while his comment makes him seem like he's trying to side with you, there's no way he wasn't thinking back to what the creep did when he decided to post his horrific video online. I completely agree that he got some of the idea from Olson's video. Continuing to pray for the families and friends of those two beautiful journalists who were taken from the world way too soon.

  5. Very creepy. Could you get in touch with the FBI as now two states are involved?

  6. Does Alden Olson have an alibi for the night Maura disappeared? It was over ten years ago, but... we still have no answers so it's worth asking.

... May seem like an obvious question.. but... after all he's bringing suspicion on himself here.

  7. Vester Flanagan is actually defending James Renner is this comment as he is referencing the dislikes given to the video noting that the poster, Renner, is not the author of the video.

  9. Furthermore, Vester Flanagan was a journalist and would likely be drawn to cases such as this one. It is not uncharacteristic for him to have viewed and commented on this case in various places. How is this in any way "creepy" or odd?

  12. James- This gave me goosebumps. However, I just did a little digging-- rest assured this is NOT Vester. He changed his account name, photo, and picture to Vester's shortly after the murder made news. If you view a cached version it's something completely different. Also, check out his YouTube profile- he just commented and posted on a video 5 minutes ago.

  14. I find it odd that a witness at a gas station say Maura with an older man and she mouthed "help me." Now we have an older man (Olson) who knows alot about this case posting videos and blogging about it. He seems to be trying to put people on the scent of other game. I think he did it. He may even have her hostage in that basement!
