Open Question

What, to you, are the most frustrating still-unresolved questions about this case?

Perhaps we can put some of these to rest - like the Red Cross call to Billy that people erroneously believed came from Maura Murray.

  1. - Why won't Kate and Sara talk?

    - Why did Fred come to Amherst that weekend?

    - Where was Maura headed when she crashed in NH?

    - What actually happened at the "party" the night before Maura left?

    - What actually happened immediately after Maura wrecked Fred's car?

    - What was the real purpose of the $4,000?

    1. I think this covers most of the key questions. I think Kate and Sara not talking is one of the biggest. I re-watched the Disappeared episode recently, and the biggest thing that jumps out at me is that all of the friends of Maura that were interviewed are high school friends. None of them were with her at either UMass or West Point.

    2. I picked one that is probably answerable:

Why did the Maura Murray blog mention a sighting of MM and her UMass buddies in Woodsville, NH, and then suddenly drop it without any comment after stating that Fred knew all about it from the start?

A corollary: If true, why wasn't this sighting in the top 5 discoveries?

    3. I completely agree and noticed the same thing. Where were her college friends from Amherst?

    9. I think what was over looked was two issues: (1) There is no doubt that from the time the bus driver stopped and spoke to Maura he estimates that it was 7-9minutes before he made the call to police at 7:43pm, the police arrived at 7:46pm. That means approximately 15mins are unaccounted for between being seen by bus driver and police showing and finding nothing. (2) She bought four items at the liquor store and only the box of wine was found. I believe she was snatched up during those 15minutes and just maybe the alcohol was grabbed also. If they could have found the bottles of liquor then maybe you find the killer !!

Kate Markopoulous is a huge lync pin IMO. James, Have you tried to contact her or go directly to her and placate her for her story?

A detailed examination of her computer search history compared to the semester course syllabi. This would show some train of thought and possibly point in a direction.

A full accounting of the items she packed up and how it was all arranged. Pictures if they are available.

A complete accounting of items in her car (as there is some conflicting info). James can you say you thoughts on where the other alcohol went?

    1. How much is an abortion?

CANADA: Provincial and territorial health care covers the cost of an abortion in hospital. In some regions, both medical and surgical abortions are available and some even cover the costs of getting an abortion in another province. In New Brunswick, women need the permission of two doctors to have an abortion.

      Delete
    2. But, as far as I know, Maura was not a Canadian citizen, temporary worker, etc. I find it hard to believe she would have been eligible for any type of low-cost healthcare in Canada. If she was looking for an abortion, surely there would've been an easier, yet still sufficiently discrete, means nearer campus. She might've been trying to end a pregnancy by drinking, but I don't think her trip north was related to obtaining an abortion from some type of medical provider.

  28. At her room in Kennedy Hall, why were Maura's belongings packed in boxes, with the art taken off of the walls? Had she not fully unpacked upon returning from winter break? Or did she pack up because she intended to leave? If she did repack, was the intent to make it easier for family to empty her room because she never intended to return from her trip on Feb. 9? Or was she planning on dropping out of UMass as soon as she returned from New Hampshire, and she was beginning the packing process before leaving for her trip?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If she didn't unpack, why was the art taken down, it indicates the art was once up. Also wasn't it said somewhere her packed boxes were on her bed, how did she sleep on her bed then? Would someone pack up there dorm because they needed a couple of days away, why even bother?

      Delete
    2. Just a reply to living in a college dorm here - we had to remove all of our valuables and our rooms were checked by security and inspected when we had to go home for Christmas break. Walls and everything were inspected for damage and anyone that left all their shit or broke codes for that particular dorm were given a fine.
How could Maura really have completely disappeared without a trace? She couldnt even go through life without troubles in her young age. What if misinformation is being spread and passed along as fact? Regarding her dorm room condition, recollection of others accounts from her last days, and Fred's questionable statements.

      Delete
    3. That is odd. I went to UMass, not the Amherst campus, and we did not have to take anything down or pack things up for winter break. Just took what we needed home and the dorms were lock on a certain date before Xmas and opened the weekend before classes started in January. Just packed important stufd and clothes, left everything else. I do not think UMass has dorms for students to use over winter break unless you pay extra and sign up. No one would have stayed in her room over winter break.

      Delete
  29. I would like to know everything there is to know about the state in which Maura left her dorm room. It's the most overlooked insight into Maura's motivations in this whole case. If I remember correctly, Maura packed up all of her belongings and left them in a box on her bed with a printout of an upsetting email from Billy laid atop. To me, that seems like a clear statement that she wasn't coming back with an extra F-you on top (literally.)

The reason I bring this up as an unresolved question is that I recently read/heard somewhere that a Maura insider denies any "message" to Billy was left behind. If an aspect of this part of the case was indeed embellished, I would like someone to sort out the facts.

  31. Why did Fred go to so many ATMS to withdraw the $4000? It makes me think that they had a shared bank account and Maura had gone to withdraw the money all of those times. Was Fred covering for her for stealing the money from him (to run away or for whatever reason)? All of the older people I know always insist on going into the bank to get a big withdrawal and want to get the money all at once. I don't know of anyone who would go around getting that much money from various ATM visits. Was there any proof that he actually withdrew that money in the first place?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've observed that people develop a different attitude toward banks as they age. When we're young and broke, the bank is this scary entity doing us a favor. Young people put up with overdraft fees and do things like drive around to several ATMs to withdraw money. Once we have a stable source of income and more life experience under the belt, people realize that the bank needs us as customers to make money.

Fred had financial problems, but he also had a good career and had already crossed the aforementioned threshold. I can't imagine any established adult lowering themselves to the level of driving around to ATMs all day to take out $4,000 unless there were no other option. In my opinion, it was either a shady emergency or a young person like Maura took the money out without consulting Fred.

$4,000 is what you would need if you lost a couple pounds of weed someone fronted you. Hell, maybe Maura got shook down for 2 lbs. by the cop who let her off after her first drunk crash. I've personally known outwardly normal and successful college students who were engaging in five-figure drug transactions where guns were involved. If one of them had disappeared, I realistically wouldn't say a peep to law enforcement or James Renner. Whatever happened is done and doing the right thing would involve a lot of risk.

Now I'm wondering, has anyone ever considered the possibility that Maura was being chased when she crashed her car? Even cartel enforcers would get the hell out of there when they saw a school bus driving up. Once Butch Atwood left the scene, they would come back and take her away. Maybe Fred initially thought it was a suicide, but Maura's friends later told him about the drug debt. All of the sudden, a dirtbag snatching her up means something that we had never considered.

      Delete
    2. If Maura was being chased, then why didn't she run to the houses across the street; or accept Atwood's offer of a ride? Even if one assumes that she was in possession of something which could get her in trouble with the law, if someone had just purposefully run her off the road and fled due to the approaching traffic, it seems like the last thing she would have done is continue to hang out by the car alone.

Like so many theories, it's impossible to rule it out, but there are aspects of it which are tough to explain.

  33. In no particular order:

    1) Was Maura's car really in as bad a shape as we've been told?
    2) Why won't Maura's friends talk?
    3) Why won't the police release more information about what, if anything, their investigation uncovered? I've got a couple ideas on this (see comments to 9/20/15 post), but they are just educated guesses.
    4) Why does Maura's family consistently maintain that her reasons for travelling north are unrelated to her disappearance? Granted, my favored theories do not contradict this line of thinking, but the family could end a lot of speculation if they would just be a little more transparent.

    ReplyDelete

    1. 1. Obviously not.
      2. Maura's friends know something about the last weekend that could possibly be incriminating either legally or publically.
      3. The police have stated that the MM investigation has led to tangential criminal activities that could lead to charges in the future.
      4. Whatever happened in that last weekend was either criminal or publically damning to the point of possibly tarnishing or even incriminating the family.

      Delete
    2. John, I'm pretty much in agreement w/ your line of thinking on these, especially no. 3 given Renner's 7/11/13 post which mentions the affidavit excerpt discussing other related crimes. I've mentioned that post before, and it still seems odd to me that we know so little about the investigation. After all, we're now over a decade removed and I'm not aware of any indictments occurring as a result of the investigation.

As I've also stated before, I wonder whether the police are still looking for additional evidence concerning a person (or persons) of interest and fear that they will tip their hand by releasing additional info.

My best guess (key word) about what this all boils down to is as follows:

      (1) As you say, Maura's friends and family know a lot more about her final weekend. They most likely have a good idea why she travelled north. However, for some compelling reason (criminal activity, embarrassment, monetary incentive, some combination thereof) they are never going to discuss what they know. They realize that they cannot talk about her disappearance generally without facing scrutiny concerning her specific reasons for the trip and activities in the days leading up to it. They've long since decided that the best thing for them to do is keep as quiet as possible. Perhaps, as the years have gone by, they wonder if finding Maura alive might be a double-edged sword, because she too has knowledge which would somehow be damaging to all of them. There are innumerable factors at play, but her friends and family might believe that a long-term separation would change her previous loyalties, whatever those were.

      (2) Maura's friends and family do not, however, know exactly what, or who, caused her disappearance. Nor do they know whether she is alive or dead.

      Delete
  34. 1. Where were her friends that are unaccounted for on the day of her disappearance and why wont they speak about Maura?
    2. If the family knows that she is alive... why not just say so without giving away her location?

    ReplyDelete
  35. What ended up coming of the NH cashier who thinks she saw Maura and two friends shortly before her disappearance?

    Something else I was considering...

    I normally don't like to speculate, but you mentioned before that Maura had participated in "track orgies". I'm skeptical that that actually happened (no disrespect to you or your reporting, it just sounds like something from a soap opera). If it is true, is it possible that the party Maura attended Saturday was one those track orgies? It would explain;
    - Why Sara and Kate won't talk (given the attention this case has gotten, their participation would be pretty sensationalized).
    - Why they can't/won't name anyone else at the party
    - Why Sara would "only tell Fred" the truth
    - Why Fred would ask her to never repeat the story
    - Why Fred would insist that details that might help police find Maura are "not important"

Again, this is 100% pure speculation, and not even something I'm sure I believe. However, it does help explain the bizarre behavior of several key people.

    2. Another interesting note I made, when Fred was showing the audience where her car had crashed, he indicated it as if he's looking at it, there was no photos of the incident, also the car was towed away long before he got there, yet so descriptive, its like he was there, no one else could describe it better. Also I agree with the tow truck driver who towed her car from Haverhill, it appears she stalled and tried to control the vehicle. Surely she would know the rag was going to stall the vehicle.

  39. Good questions guys.

Similarly to the red cross call there is a confusion around the letter/printout Maura had on the top of her boxes in her room.

I've seen reports of Billy and his mother saying there was no letter. But then there is the common belief that it was a printout of an email Billy had sent Maura.

In an attempt to put this confusion to rest.... how do we know what was or wasn't on top of the box? Who is the source that stated it was an email? Where is this email now?

  40. This some of these have already been said, but I'll repeat it to bring more attention to it:

Why won't the ATM footage be released? (Biggest question imo)

Is Fred responsible for this? Is this why friends and family won't talk?

Who was at that party? Did the person responsible for this attend, and is that why
Kate and others are scared to speak (because scared is the impression I get from some of these witnesses, not dodgy)?

If Maura didn't hit Vasi, who did? Does she know that person?

Why did she make plans with who friends to go to an event on a date after she disappeared if she know she wasn't coming back (if that was her plan)? Was this a ruse created with her friends?

Is there any bitter blood between Maura and her mother? Why didn't her mother make an effort to look for her even though she was sick? If Maura is alive an disappeared, why was she comfortable with staying in hiding even after her mother died?

Although they might not like that negative aspects of Maura's life are being brought to the fore in this investigation, why are family/friends so hostile?

Was the person at the accident indeed Maura? Or was it someone her looked similar (her sister)?

Why the confusion regarding when Maura came to the hotel room and what she and Fred were doing on that day?

Why isn't Fred talking to you? If my daughter was missing, I'd do everything in my power to find her - I wouldn't care about the cost. Heck, I'd give a thousand interviews for a thousand different books if it would help find her.

    ReplyDelete
  51. James, I think you have seriously overlooked the Petrit Vasi link. A job like the one Maura had would have been very nonchalant and the supervisors would have rarely checked up on the kids working, especially that late at night. The fact you are overlooking is that the supervisors are going to claim there was no way she could have left to cover their own behinds. My question would be, did Maura hit that man with her car that night. It only makes sense with the followup accidents to cover up the evidence. If she did hit that man, that to me is the cherry on top that she is hiding in Canada.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree with you 100% that she might have hit him, but I'm not so sure that's she's in Canada (could be anywhere/unfortunately deceased). Vasi could be the big "secret" among friends and family. She thought she hit and killed him, then ran away. But maybe the family lost contact with her and doesn't know where she is now, worst of all, she's not in as much trouble as she thought because Vasi lived. They aren't talking because Maura might turn into a fugitive, like how the Michelle McMullan case went. Stealing got her kicked out of Westpoint but she did it again at UMass. Getting an abortion is pretty easy. She had to have done something more serious than those two things to make her run away.

      Delete
    2. I've been thinking about what the "Secret" could be, and I'm really curious if it was a pregnancy admission. I remember having an experience in college myself, where mid-party, a friend got extremely upset (alcohol can really intensify emotions) and after pulling her into the bathroom she started balling her eyes out saying she had just found out she was pregnant, and was a mess. I remember walking her back to her room, completely inconsolable, and promising I wouldn't tell anyone. She obviously had it terminated. :(

  52. 1. When was the last confirmed sighting of Maura from someone who actually knew her (not counting a possibly fuzzy ATM shot, a liquor store video, Butsons or Butch Atwood)? Was it the person that Maura gave the nursing uniform to before she left (if she actually left it with her)? If not her, then was it Fred who last saw Maura?

    2. Was Maura's car involved with hitting Petrit Vasi?

    3. Was Fred told that there was a rag in the tailpipe or did he offer that information?

    4. Who made the multiple ATM withdrawals of $4,000? What happened to that money?

    5. Who made the ATM withdrawal that almost emptied Maura's account?

    6. Why did it take so long for Fred to drive to Haverhill after he found out that Maura was missing? According to Wikipedia, he spoke with his oldest daughter at 5pm on February 10. He did not arrive into Haverhill until the next morning on February 11? Whey didn't he drive down there immediately?

    7. Where were Kate and Sara during the time that Maura went missing?

    8. What was the real relationship between Maura and Billy? They had just seen each other for Christmas break. If it is confirmed that Maura had a relationship with her coach, why would she care if Billy had an affair? Why would she place the email on top of her packed boxes (if there really was such an email)?

    9. I am still not convinced with the Red Cross voicemail that Billy received. It seems such a coincidence that Maura was given a red cross calling card from Billy and his mother and then Billy happened to receive a voicemail from a Red Cross worker after Maura went missing. If the Red Cross worker needed to speak with Billy directly, why didn't they leave a message? If they are not allowed to leave a voicemail, why did they not not hang up before his voicemail beeped? Did they ever try calling him again?

    10. I find it so unlikely that Rick Forcier happened to remember seeing Maura so long after the accident. He lived right there. Surely, the whole street would have been talking about what happened. I don't know how often he sees people out and about on those streets in the winter months, but I would think that he would immediately remember seeing a person the same night of the disappearance.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Wasn't it that Forcier checked through his records of jobs (he's a self-employed man, right?) and realised that it had been the night of the disappearance that he saw a figure on Rte.116?

Perhaps too much was made of that - he can only have had a fleeting glimpse of someone. It could have been anyone, really.

    2. Now that I think about it, I should've added the RF sighting to my list. How is it possible that he only made a connection months later while looking at his records when Maura's disappearance was widely publicized in all forms of North Country media--print, radio, TV, internet, not to mention plain old word of mouth--in the days following the accident? To me, it is inconceivable that he did not hear or see something sooner which made him form a connection. Of all the strange occurrences associated with this case, the RF sighting might be the strangest.

      Delete
    3. 1. Presumably the last person to see MM excluding those you mentioned, would have been the fellow nursing student, to whom the police no doubt spoke, or possibly a clerk with the MA Registry of Motor Vehicles if MM stopped at an office to retrieve the accident forms found in the car.

      2. There is no evidence that MM had any involvement with the injury of Vasi. There is no evidence that Vasi was actually the victim of a vehicular collision.

      3. However FM was notified of the rag in the tailpipe, he immediately gave his explanation.

      4. Presumably it was FM alone or possibly with MM.

      5. MM withdrew the money from her own account. This was confirmed by police.

      6. FM arrived in the early morning hours of the following day. The time is consistent with a drive from southern Connecticut.

      7. Kate was missing for at least a day following the disappearance.

      8. Perhaps both had their own sexual relationships and it didn't bother either.

      9. The Red Cross call origin has been confirmed.

      10. Rick Forcier is someone I would investigate closer.

      Delete
    4. 6. The time isn't consistent. On tuesday Feb. 10 Fred found out about Maura around 5 pm. Fred didn't arrive in Haverhill until Wed. Feb. 11 around 8-9 AM.
Where fred was it should of took him about 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on if he took I-91 or I-93.

      Delete
    5. 3. There's no evidence because the police didn't investigate Vasi's hit and run, and they didn't investigate on whether Maura had done it. Just because there's no evidence doesn't mean Maura didn't hit him. Yeh there's a possibility she didn't but there's also a possibility she did.

      Delete
    6. @anonymous1 - FM was notified at 1700 on Feb 10, and he contacted the Haverhill police and was told that if she wasn't found by the next morning, a search would be initiated. It was a simple abandoned vehicle at that point.

It is likely that FM was working at that time and could not get away until later in the evening, and by the account I have FM arrived before dawn in Haverhill and the search started at 0800 Fed 11 with FM.

@anonymous2 - The police didn't investigate the Vasi incident further due to lack of evidence. There were no eyewitnesses, no damaged vehicles found, a narrative that possibly Vasi possibly fell from a moving vehicle in a drunken state, a victim in a coma that cannot provide a statement, and then thereafter cannot remember details nor chooses to pursue the matter. What would you have the police to do? The fact is that we must follow evidence and there is none that shows MM was involved in a vehicular collision with Vasi. You may speculate this point if it aids in tying pieces of other evidence together, but you will need something more to have it be deemed conclusive.

    7. "I am still not convinced with the Red Cross voicemail that Billy received."

You shouldn't get hung up on this point. As other's have said- the call from the RedCross has been 100% confirmed as being such. As for why they didn't hang up when they received voicemail- that's SO minor and there are a million explanations. Human error. have you ever worked in an office or call center? There's distractions. Someone could have been talking to her and it took an extra couple of seconds to hang up, or she could have thought the receiver was all the way down when it wasn't. I know I've received many a voice mail where the call was not hung up or there was a delay. I don't understand why people still dwell on this, when it's one of the only, solid, things in the case that can definitively be marked off as being legit.

  54. Maura made a call to a fellow nursing student the day she disappeared. Maura's family says she was trying to return scrubs because she was always borrowing them. To me, it seems if you are borrowing scrubs from someone, then you feel comfortable enough with them to ask to borrow them. You wouldn't think you'd ask to borrow scrubs from someone you barely spoke with. Did Maura speak or see this fellow nursing student on the day of her disappearance? The semester hadn't been in for that long, so how many clinicals had they gone to since the semester had started? Has this fellow nursing student been willing to speak about what they may know or how Maura had been acting?
Why did the police allow Fred to get Maura's things from her dormroom before they had gone through it? Just seems once they realized she was missing, that would of been one of the first things they would of done. Go to her dormroom and go through her belongings.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Maura returned a lab coat, not scrubs. The lab coat is likely not required during classroom sessions, but for clinical rotations only. Therefore MM could borrow the coat on days that the other student was on clinicals.

A missing person's case is not a criminal case and therefore police do not seize evidence. There was no evidence of foul play so the case was not being investigated as criminal. Generally in a missing persons case the police request access to the belongings of the missing, but cannot compel without a court order which would require evidence of a crime occurring.

      Delete
    2. Well then why did they retrieve her computer about 3 months later. Are you saying 3 months later they had evidence of a crime occurring.

      Delete
    3. In my opionion in order to borrow someone's labcoat, you would had to talk with them enough to feel comfortable to ask to borrow it. Most people aren't going to ask to borrow a Labcoat from someone they barely speak with. Since they hadn't been back to school that long, wonder how many clinical rotations they had gone on.

    4. @anonymous - The police received the computer upon request. Once MM was not located in a timely manner, the police expanded the investigation to include other evidence sources in an attempt to find a lead.

    2. MM did not call BR on a calling card after she left Amherst. That call was made by a Red Cross representative.

MM did not have a positive relationship with her mother. There are accounts that LM belittled MM in at least the months leading up to the disappearance. There is no evidence of LM's participation in any search for MM even after her injury recovery. There just seems to be little to compel MM out of hiding (if she is indeed alive) to attend a funeral for LM. MM would want to stay hidden after all.

    2. You mean Fred's word of car shopping on Sat. with 4,000 that he pulled out of multiple ATM's , the party Maura was supposedly at with Sara and Kate but neither can remember much of anything.
I believe the police only have what Fred, Sara, and Kate said. One of them, can't remember which one said Maura left her phone at "The Party" Sat. Night, Fred says he dropped Maura off around 1 pm on Sunday, so Maura should of had to retrieve her phone from someone if she had really left it at the " Party". No one has spoke up and said she came and retrieved her phone from them. I do believe checking to see where her phone was pinging could be relative because it could show 1. Where was Fred and Maura on Sat. 2. On Sunday and Monday when Maura made calls where they actually were being placed from.
Her phone might of pinged from Amherst but there's a possibility it wasn't and that could possibly lead in a new direction.

    2. This is all unknown. There is no evidence that MM was involved in any incident with Vasi. The time involved for MM to park her car in a hidden location or in a lot not highly visible is also inconsistent with where and when we know MM was on her desk post.

    3. Its not known if Maura was at her desk post. She could of been on a break. We know Maura was on the phone with Billy at 12:07 am on Feb. 6 for 7 minutes. Petrit Vasi was found around 12:20 am.
Maura was found in a Catonic state around 1 AM. I don't think the possibility of Maura hitting Vasi, should be just overlooked so quickly. Maura hitting Vasi, would fit into the puzzle of events that followed.

    3. Agreed; I've been saying the same thing for awhile now. Additionally, why travel all the way to Northern NH to ditch the car? Plenty of rural country nearer campus in Southern NH or VT. She also could've just left it in a parking lot. Secondly, if one is going to ditch a car, the last thing he or she should do is leave behind incriminating evidence of drunk driving. The next car around the bend might be a cop, regardless of where you ditch. Finally, even if one did intend to travel to Northern NH with the object of abandoning a car, there are innumerable dirt roads with less traffic and no nearby houses. Many of the dirt roads run next to ravines or similar geographic features which could, for a short period of time, conceal a car which had been driven off the road from what little traffic there is, provided the tire tracks into the snow bank at the roadside were shoveled in. My understanding is that Maura had hiked in the White Mountains with Fred, so I find it hard to believe she wouldn't have had at least some knowledge of the backcountry roads. There are very few things I feel strongly about with this case, but the crash not being staged is one of them.

  61. So many great questions.

For me, the biggest questions are:

    - Where did Kate go for those few days just as Maura first went missing?
    - WTF happened with the $4000?

Utter speculation but: What if someone Maura knew hit Vasi and *that* is the call Maura got that caused her to break down? Did she call any of her friends 'sister' (like sorority sister relationship)? What if the whole purpose was to get *that* person away, money and all, and it went terribly wrong when Maura was instead the one to go missing? In this case, what happened just before would have little to nothing to do with why she actually disappeared (per Fred's proclamation).

  62. I've spent the last few weeks reading up on MM disappearance. I started this blog from the first post in 2011, but decided to skip back since so much is duplicated. I don't know nearly as much about her disappearance as many of you, but I do have the basics.

The one question I have is why doesn't FM want as much publicity as possible? I have experience working with families of missing persons, my sole focus is to get them as much print and airtime as possible. Getting a 30 second segment on the news or a few lines in the print media reaches more people than knocking on doors. Because of the amount of people missing in the US, I have to make a compelling case for why the family I'm working with deserves the airtime. I'm dumbfounded why Maura's father is giving up what thousands of families are begging and praying for. I don't think he's involved in Maura's disappearance, but like many others, I think he's withholding information. Why? To protect her reputation? After 11 years? Makes no sense.

IMO, sadly I think Maura was a victim of foul play. View the video of Hannah Graham to see how fast someone can disappear, especially in a compromised condition. Think of the odds of Hannah being picked up by a serial killer. Remote, but she was. The fact is, most serial killers choose strangers so that they aren't caught. Remember Ted Bundy? How many young girls who look like Maura did he kill before he was caught in FL? Truth is, we'll never know. I'm not saying Maura was killed by a serial killer, but I do believe she was killed. I would love to believe she's living a new life, happy and free, but odds are against it.

  63. I would like LE confirmation about which side Maura's windshield was cracked. Everyone online says it was from the inside and people take it as fact, but I was looking into it and don't think so. Windshields have multiple layers, so the side that is jagged/sharp/chipped is often the side that had impact. The Saturn's windshield is jagged on the outside. A spiderweb crack is usually from the impact of a small object, like a rock or ice, which could have happened when she hit the snowbank. Having a definitive answer to this question could put to sleep questions about whether or not Maura hit her head and sustained an injury.

  64. I wonder if Maura had a fear of police/le. Getting caught with the credit cards and then possibly hitting someone while driving, and then her dad having her go get the police forms. Maybe she had a fear of le, or fear that they would find out more about things she had done. She knew the cops would be called when she crashed, and she was afraid of them and ran away into the snow. Some people panic and act like that when in car crashes or stressful situations.

  73. I have lots of questions!

    If Maura was murdered:

    - *What of the red truck spotted in the area? I believe a witness stated that it had been acting suspiciously by slowing down when it passed a woman in the area? To me, this is a huge clue.
    - Is there any evidence at all that Israel Keyes might have traveled to NH around the time of Maura’s disappearance?
    - *What of the a-frame house and the blood evidence and dogs alerting to a corpse having been there? Why did this lead fizzle out without explanation?
    - I have read a claim that police believe Maura could be buried under the house of a suspect in this case. Whose house/which suspect, and why couldn’t they follow up on this lead?

If Maura started a new life:

    - What would her occupation likely be?
    - Who is the adult Canadian woman in the photo who bears a striking resemblance to Maura (accessible via Google images)?
    Accident scene:
    - *What happened to the bottles/boxes of alcohol in the car?

    Maura’s mindset:

    - If Maura hit Vasi, what did she think the punishment might be if she found out? Would it be worth starting a new life somewhere, to get away from the authorities?
    - Why did Maura get involved with a married man? What were her hopes for the relationship? No judgment here, I’m simply curious as to her mindset.
    - Was the amount that Maura was drinking around the time of her disappearance typical for her?

    Miscellaneous:

    - *What are the authorities/police theories about her disappearance? Is her case active?
    - How much evidence is there that Maura might have hit Vasi? Is it just a theory or is there any evidence?
    - Are family & friends being less forthcoming 1. in order to protect Maura’s reputation 2. Because they believe the authorities won’t take her case seriously if they believe she was troubled/mentally ill 3. Because they have something to hide?
    - People from New England can be very reserved and private. Is it possible that that’s why her family and friends come across as less than forthcoming?

    My latest theories:

    - I agree with others that the last party could have been one of the purported “track orgies.” This, or drug use, could be reasons Maura’s friends were not forthcoming about the party or who was there.
    - I agree with others that Maura might have been traveling to have an abortion (or even possibly trying to induce one). Her friends might have known about it, but are unlikely to reveal this information publicly.
    - *Rick Forcier’s comment about Maura cooking for him was strange and noteworthy. He also claimed to have spotted her running several miles from the crash scene. I believe this is unlikely. If he did not spot her, why did he say he did?

*The ones that stand out to me.
