Calls Also Show Scope of Search in the First Days Maura Was Missing

According to the list of roaming calls, Bill Rausch passed through the following location while searching for Maura, beginning February 11: Burlington, Vermont; Streaked Mountain, Maine, Lebanon, New Hampshire; Concord, New Hampshire; Rutland, Vermont.

Also, there are no roaming calls before the 11th, lending further credence to Bill being far away at Fort Sill when Maura disappeared.

  1. Observation of what an almost certainly not important coincidence... the shortest route to Greene, ME from Haverhill goes right through Hebron, ME, where Streaked Mountain is located.

But, looking at a map, it seems highly plausible that Billy went north on 116, then on Route 3, up to Route 2 and follow it west into Maine. In such situations, I think people feel a need to do something. This was a not unlikely way to go if you were wanting to check hotels in various towns and/or put up posters.

  2. Was Maura heading to Maine? Maura had directions to Vermont, disappeared in New Hampshire but haven't seen anything about Maine.
Is any of these areas near Pittsburgh, NH, where the Backlake sighting was?
IMO I think its possible Maura's directions was a red herring. If she was running, she wouldnt want to lead people straight to her.
You would want them looking in the opposite direction of where you really were heading.

    1. Bartlett/Conway NH area (where Maura had researched accommodations) is very close to the Maine border.

  3. With the relationship troubles, car crashes and such there is no doubt we have stress and turmoil in her life and a reason to leave, at least for a few days.

The big piece of the puzzle that is still missing is if her vanishing is a direct or non direct result of her leaving...for instance a suicide or perhaps encountering a stranger.

I'd like to think that if we can figure why and where went off to, we might be onto something. However, those random and indirect variables (ie a stranger) might be the big problem we face with solving this.

    1. My gut says this is the case. Yes, there's gossip to be had, but I feel that whatever her plans were, she was the victim of an abduction either by someone placing the rag in the tailpipe to cause her to breakdown (then follow and pick her up), or just a crime of opportunity after picking her up after the breakdown.

      Delete
    2. The rag does point to a third party taking advantage of a (allegedly) single person on the road.

BUT - why would her father mention he told her to put it there for whatever reason?
Why would he want to put it out there that he thought SHE put it there?
Why would he have assumed he knew that for SURE?

It was likely just a random statement but still a little odd.

It was dark, in NH, on a road with flaws.

It's VERY likely someone hit her.

      Then there's the truck.

      Delete
    3. I thought that was covered in a podcast. The rag was not supposed to be made public - the police seized the exhaust. I guess it leaked and then Fred made up that the rag was somehow normal and he told her to do it. I think initially it was a clue that got leaked. That's how I interpret the podcast anyway.

    4. AnonymousNovember 12, 2015 at 10:23 AM, my theory about the rag is that the police were thinking its presence suggested that Maura was suicidal. Fred was worried that if police thought she was on a suicide mission they wouldn't try very hard to locate her. Therefore he gave the story about telling her to use the rag to stop the car from smoking.

Another possibility is that police have a theory about the rag but asked Fred to proide a cover story to make a (possible) person of interest think that the police don;t know anything when in fact, they do.

  4. I'm confused. Was Billy calling these areas specifically or were these locations where her phone pinged when he was trying to call her?

    1. I don't think he was actually making calls to these locations. Instead, I think these were the areas/cell towers that the roaming calls he was making were picked up.

  5. How do we know MM was actually the driver of her car? Bus driver the only witness, and has passed away...
May have been a decoy to steer from Burlington or other areas, and ended up off the road. Just a thought...

    1. Butch at first said the girl he saw didn't look like the picture of Maura. Then later he identified the driver as Maura.
So yeah I think its a possibility the driver wasn't Maura

      Delete
    2. I think that is an interesting concept and worth thinking about. If, for instance, Kathleen had been driving the car, how would Butch know the difference. If (even) Kate was driving the car, would be necessarily know?

A related idea that is worth thinking about in my view is this: how do we know that it was Maura that packed up her room. Some with her dorm room key could have packed it up ... after Monday the 9th. Kathleen at that time strongly resembled Maura at that time. She could have walked into Kennedy with Maura's ID. Kate could have either walked in or been signed in by someone else she knew at Kennedy.

I'm not trying to suggest that either of these specific scenarios happened in fact. But it is worth considering that we don't specifically know that Maura was driving the car and we don't specifically know that she packed up the room. We are inferring them from a logical narrative around the five strange days. But that logical narrative is problematic as, we all know.

      Delete
    3. Similarly we arent really certain it was Maura emailing the professors either.Whoever packed up the dorm room may have composed the email to the buy some time or distract from the fact an event actually ocurred in Amherst.

    4. I don't think it is that weird to not recognize someone from a photo, especially if it is a photo of someone nondescript-looking who you only ever saw for two minutes in the dark anyway.

I just got a school photo of my own niece (who I see all the time) and it doesn't look like her at all!

  6. Really love the blog (been following since day 1) and you have busted this care right open, but you still fail to see key relationships. You do have it right she's in Canada, but you don't fully understand why. I think the police have cracked it as well, they are just keeping a tight lid on things until they have the opportunity to make three arrests. Yes three. The case is filled with red herrings for a reason and so many individuals have been played by FM and MM including the police and Billy Rausch. If you really had a solid idea what happened you wouldn't question his character. He was simply in the wrong place in the wrong time. You seem to have gotten caught up in pieces of evidence that don't really matter in this case. Go back and look at the most simple pieces of evidence again. The car, spatial relationships of the crash site, etc. It'll all begin to add up if you don't jump to conclusions too quickly which you have done in years past. :-)

    3. Hi LOBO.

I have been watching this blog from day 1 as well. What is the basis of your implied inside knowledge of what really happened? Are you a family member? Are you a member of LE close to the case? I ask this because you clearly are saying that you already have the answers James has yet to get to, in a kind of deep throat online persona. It is not immediately evident why you would not simply email James and tell him this stuff. It is also not immediately evident why you would hint at it in a public post. Ultimately, if you have such information, I know that I and others would hope James would get it. Too often, people have claimed such inside knowledge and were thus the sources of the red herrings. In that context, I ask you to put out what you know, publically or to James. What point asserting that you know without saying?

      Delete
    4. 3 arrests? Can you explain your theory further? I don't think Maura was running to Canada.I think it has something to do with the party...

      Or it was suicide...

    6. Even though I am ignoring most of what anonymous has said in this thread, he did make one good point. I don't feel digging through Maura's personal life will help us answer this mystery. I am currently rethinking the Connecticut river valley angle. I know it's been a long time since that group of murders but times have changed and it's more difficult now for serial killers to find opportunities to kill. Perhaps this was one?

    7. 7:27- Faith Westman calls 911 saying there's a car in the ditch, sees a man smoking a ciggarrette
Mr. Westman- says it was a female and thought the glow was from cellphone charger or cellphone
Wouldn't Maura's phone need to be turned on for there to be a light on?
Was the cellphone charger plugged in? If it wasn't, then the Glow couldn't of been from that..
The Marriott's - believed the car backed up parallel to the rd, indicated by the backlights- also I believe it was said they saw the Saturn with flashers on
7:43- Hanover dispatched Haverhill to advise there was a call for them..from Butch Atwood's house-
Didn't Barbara say To the 911 dispatcher husband saw the crash, came home to call but had no idea where crash victim was? If so, didn't Butch just leave from the Saturn, so how would he not know where crash victim was?
Butch said he told driver they should turn flashers on so they wouldnt be hit by another driver coming around the curve
On the podcast, Mr. Westman said the car hit a tree. He said that's your first problem because I'm telling you the car hit a tree. But not the one with a blue ribbon on it, but several trees up from it.
After Butch left, the Marriott's said they saw the interior light go on and off, and then a flurry of activity around the trunk area.
Butch originally said the driver didn't look like Maura, but later on identified the driver as Maura.
Why did Butch back his bus up this particular night? According to neighbors he always parked in front of the house by the flood light. Supposedly, if he would of parked in his normal spot he would of had an unobstructed view of the crash site. Does anyone know if this is true?
Then you have a lady named Anne, that said around 7 she heard on the police scanner a car in ditch, and then person left in personal vehicle.
If Anne heard this could she be wrong on the time because Faith described the Saturn as being in ditch.
Could the timing of the 911 calls be off, since the call from Butchs house originally couldn't get through to 911 because of busy circuits?
Why would the circuits be busy if the only call on log was Faiths at 7:27? And then Butch's?
Didn't Maura's scent stop right before Butch's driveway?
Did Maura or someone she knew, know someone in that vicinity?
IMO, odd that witnesses know the car hit a tree, saw activity at car, but didn't see where the driver went.
If Maura had passed the Stage Shop, why wouldn't she head back that way, where there would most likely be a payphone she could use? She had calling cards.
Did the calling cards have minutes left on them?
Here's a quote from Billy, " it seems apparent that she most certainly jumped in a vehicle", Raush said.
In the early days of her disappearance, it was believed she got into a vehicle. Who's vehicle??? The red truck.
IMO, the person in the red truck, could be the key, or they could of saw something.
Perhaps the witnesses original statements could hold a clue that has been overlooked..

  7. I'm making a lot of jumps and assumptions here but I think there may be some logic behind her behaviour before leaving.

Lots of "emotionally vulnerable" can cheat for attention purposes, to satisfy an immediate needy crave for physical attention. Perhaps Maura suffered from this. However, it's also possible that in spite of this, she needed the "comfort" of a "proper/emotions" relationship with Billy, and finding out that this may no longer the case, could badly effect her.

Billy may have been shocked, upset, remorseful about how he had effected her and would do the logical thing of "I'm leaving right now to come and see you and make everything better".

It's possible that Maura may have not wanted to see him, and/or be struggling to deal with a combination of events surrounding her so felt the need to "get away for a while" so when an "insistent Billy" wouldn't take no for an answer she knew that she couldn't stay in Amherst.

So, how does she do that. She creates a scene in her room that once found an initial reaction might be "she's gone, everything's packed up, she's left so quickly she didn't even have time to take everything" type thing.

Add to that, if you're an insistent Billy and won't take no for an answer, you eventually get in to her room somehow and think "why would she leave like this?" And then, voila, right on the top is his answer: "because you cheated on me and I lost the emotional crutch I needed".

Obviously all complete speculation, but, perhaps it does create an "innocent" back story to why the sudden take off. She was very emotionally upset, she had been thrust into a situation that she didn't want to be in or deal with (Billy coming to Amherst) so now she has to remove herself from it which is running away whilst making it clear to her boyfriend that he's the reason she's gone so leave her alone knowing her other alibi is safe with the university as he will probably not want to admit publicly about his cheating and the fact he was the trigger for her being pushed over the edge and to running away?

Anyway, I'm just saying that it's possible that it might not have been as calculated and pre planned or planned as a long term thing as some may think. It fills be a semi-knee jerk reaction to an unexpected situation that she felt Ina le to deal with given her emotional state.

  12. Perhaps what was going on with Maura started weeks prior to her disappearance and not on that Thursday, the day of her breakdown.
Something that has always interested me is that when Fred tried to get police records, the police said they shouldn't/ couldn't release them because they found evidence of criminal activity not directly related to Maura's disappearance. One of the crimes they said was Arson. Why would they put arson? Was it just another criminal activity to name or did something happen involving arson??

  14. I recently discovered this case, despite being around Maura's age and attending college in that area at the time. I relate to her and I feel very very sorry for her and her family. The circumstances of her disappearance are indeed curious, but I think the conclusion is pretty straightforward. I have been through pretty severe emotional distress, like Maura, and you don't act rationally. I could have seen myself doing exactly what she did, down to drinking some red wine on a long drive, just to escape myself/my thoughts/ and just go on a trip. I am also a private person. I think she was planning to leave school, and in an emotional fit she printed out that email... maybe to act where she couldn't talk (she was a private person). I think her trip was supposed to be temporary, and the accident in NH threw a wrench into things. She was obviously scared and trying to avoid a drunk driving charge (again). Her father probably told her to stick the rag in the tailpipe to throw off the cops - he may have even told her that just the night before when she wrecked the Corolla. She likely placed it there right before she fled. She didn't take many of her belongings with her it seems, probably just the alcohol in her backpack. She was buzzed, pressed for time, and didn't get a chance to clean the wine out of the car and probably forgot it was there. Her mind must have been racing. She probably wanted to sober up or maybe find somewhere to sleep it off, and return to the car or the cops later. What happened next is a mystery, but I think she likely ended up venturing into the woods to hide, especially after some witnesses saw her and she was said to have tried to avoid them by turning down side streets. She probably drank too much, passed out, and succumbed to hypothermia. That area is incredibly dark, cold and windy. Even if she woke up in the woods or somehow remained conscious, she may never have found her way out.

    A real tragedy.

    1. IMO to be scared of getting a DUI, 16 minutes is a long time to sit at a car.
The only person that said they saw Maura was Rick Forcier who didn't come forward with this until months later.
He said when he was reviewing his work records he realized that the night he saw a person running was the night of Maura's disappearance.
He lived close to the scene but apparently wasn't home when the crash happened.
The other witnesses said they heard the crash, looked out the window to see someone at the car, but didn't see where the person went.

    2. dying the woods has always seemed to me to be the most likely/obvious scenario. but then i would think "well why hasn't her body been found then?" the woods were searched and even if animals scattered her bones, something surely would've been found after all this time?

BUT. If you look up the Jamison family that went missing in Oklahoma in 2009 their remains were only just found in November of 2013, 2.5 miles from where their truck was located. And that area had been searched heavily/thoroughly at the time of their disappearance. It took 4 years to find 3 bodies less than 3 miles from where they disappeared. So, I don't think it's unlikely Maura is still somewhere in those woods.

      Delete
    3. Thanks anonymous @ 8:16 pm ... that is a really informative and insightful post. I think you are correct that people who die in the backwoods are sometimes found a long time later not very far away at all from place of known last whereabouts, or areas searched. Those experienced in the back woods know how easy it can be to get swallowed up by that environment. Many scenarios exist.

  21. IMO, the Vasi angle should be looked into and not dismissed so quickly.
Thursday 40 minutes after Vasi was found, Maura was found in a catonic state. Which if Maura did hit Vasi, this could of been her ruse so she could get out of work so she could hide her car. If Maura did hit Vasi, her first thought most likely was I need to get back to work so its not noticed she was gone, once back Maura would of needed to get out of work so she could hide her car.
The phone call to Billy from 12:07-12:14, which was Never spoke of early on. The only call spoke of was the one to Kathleen around 10 pm. Why never mention the call to Billy??
When the Vasi angle was mentioned, Maura's family said it couldn't of been her because she was at work and it happened no where near where Maura was. Which in reality, it happened very close to where Maura was...
On Saturday Feb 7 Maura called Reliance Auto, which the owner just happened to own the apartment Vasi was living in.
Monday Feb. 9, the story ran in the UMASS paper, which is the day Maura disappeared.
The 4,000 Fred withdrew quickly from multiple ATMs and then came to town on Sat after a storm to go car shopping. But no one remembers seeing them car shopping and Maura's friends said Maura didn't mention anything about getting a new car. Maura didn't get a new car on Saturday.
IMO, there's a lot of quincendances that need to really be looked at to Rule this angle out.

    2. Not trying to be mean but the correct usage of could & would in that tense/scenario is followed by the word "have" not "of". "Could have", "would have" etc. The word "of" cannot follow those words really, it would make no sense. Rapid conversational speech has made us contract these 2 words to "could've" and "should've" etc so one can see how that " 've " sound at the end of those words could seem like your hearing "of" there & voice activated devices might not get it correct either. And the word is "coincidence" not with a "q". Not grammar policing, not making fun at all. Just trying to help. Your posts will be easier to read. It's not always easy for everyone & voice activated devices to get the above examples as well as: "your" vs "you're", "its" vs "it's" and "to" vs "too". But it can't hurt to improve & polish up on these things so your letters, posts, replies, resumes, memos, etc will be more legible. I do not profess to be perfect by any means. But it can't hurt to improve. Hope you do not take it the wrong way.

  22. DId the bus driver see her run east of her car, after she fled from the cops? He was parked in front of his house in view of the accident scene, allegedly keeping an eye on things and sitting in his bus. How could he not have seen her run by him? Unless she went into the woods, she had to pass his home. Or else, she didn't run east and the dog didn't actually pick up a trail at all (which is what it sounds like). In her position I would have run in the direction I came from (west), because at least it is familiar and she knew there was civilization in that direction and potentially phone service, etc. She also might have run down old peters road - that intersection is right where she crashed and would have been the quickest place to hide. I wonder how well they checked around there.

-"On Saturday Feb 7 Maura called Reliance Auto, which the owner just happened to own the apartment Vasi was living in."-

I think this is the first mention of it I've seen & would like to know if it's a proven fact because it sorta figures into something I was coming to ask. :)

Does anyone know if the Domino's Maura called was in Amherst near Melville Hall? When I lived in Amherst from 2009-2013 (right behind the central residential area), the only Domino's I knew about was in Hadley, about 1.5 miles from the area where Melville is.

    Bear with me:

Somewhere on this blog someone asked if a friend could have borrowed Maura's car & it was that person who hit Petrit. If the Domino's she called was near UMass, I wonder about the timing of that call in relation to her breakdown. Is it possible she let a friend who worked at Domino's borrow her car to deliver pizza? Could that person have hit Petrit? The other aspect to this is that if the Domino's was very near Melville & Maura's car was there, that would have left her with a shorter walk to her car--& then I wonder what that does to the timing the hit-&-run & Maura actually being seen at work, as well as the timing of her call to Domino's.

Anyway--just a possibly crazy theory. But this seems more interesting to me if the quote I posted from anonymous is true.

  25. BrunetteCoffee I've been thinking about Maura's case a ton in the last few weeks, and I must say she was either killed by the elements, taken by a stranger, or killed herself. In that order. This was not a foreward-planning girl who could orchestrate an involved getaway into a new life. By all accounts, she was impulsive and frazzled in the days leading up to the accident(s). Cold case needs to fully examine Kate and Sara. They know more than they are telling, surely. That Butson's sighting speaks volumes. One of the first things they drill into your head in AA is that all of these things you looked at as "accidents" or "bad luck" all had a common theme. I'm no militant 12-stepper...but so many accidents and problems in this time span? Maura was either abusing alcohol or had a subconscious death wish or, as is often the case, both.
