Happy Hunting

Here are the coordinates and the email I received a while ago. The police have had this since April 2014, though I do not know if it was ever checked out.

I'm republishing now because it went up on Reddit last night and I'd rather a reader of this blog get there before some person who is unfamiliar with the ins and outs of this case does.

I should say, if you take this trip, please be careful. That is unforgiving wilderness and it is possible this is a bait for me. Please don't fall in a murder hole or something. And don't go alone.

Also, pictures, please.

  1. That is just off Bear notch road and that road is closed for the winter. There are gates at each end of the road.

    1. When I put the coordinates into Google maps, I get a location north of Mt. Carrigan, which is a few miles from Bear Notch road. The location seems inaccessible from any direction. Maybe Google has it wrong...?

    2. True, there are gates, but they are quite away in from the main roads. There is plenty of open maintained road to the gates.

    3. I am not sure where the Bear Notch Road comments come from because the given coordinates (degrees, minutes, seconds) gives the Desolation Trail site.
The trail doesn't appear on Google maps but does on topo maps available at Landmarkhunter.com-- the site is right along the Desolation Trail which runs from Stillwater Junction on the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River south to the summit of Mount Carrigain. Since the trail is listed as a Cross Country skiing and snowshoe trail, I presume it is never closed. So it is accessible as we shall see when people start sending in their trek pictures. If I lived in NE still, I'd be up there on the next weekend. Those podcast guys should go up there and film it (to finally have video on their YouTube).
The thing about this site is you'd think a hoaxer would pick a more obvious or more easily accessible site. This site is obscure enough but along a trail so that it lends it some authenticity. It also meshes well with the backpack sighting at the Pemigewasset Overlook. From there a person could hike up the Wilderness Trail to Stillwater Jct then turn right onto the Desolation Trail. In fact I'd recommend any hikers to follow that route if they are seeking out the site.

also hoaxing the internet is of several degrees of magnitude less than murdering someone

  2. That road would have been closed in February so I find it hard to believe that Maura is there unless she was moved there after May 0f 2004

Oh come on... How could she walk this far from where she crashed her car?? Even if someone gave her a ride to the Signal Ridge nature trail, it's an awful long way to walk in the cold... Even if she ran track.... I don't see this happening...

  12. Of course it isn't anywerhe near Bear Notch road. Anyone who can read a map knows that isn't how someone would approach that area. I use to hike all around that area including doing Mt Carrigain. Didn't do it from the north approach. The easiest, though not shortest route is to approach from the kanc and use ceder brook trail access from the hairpin turn area. There are camping areas that you can camp at along the way. It should also be mentioned that those "gps coordinates" could be off by up to 100 meters because most maps are NAD27 and its likely the GPS coordinates are in WGS83/NAD83 so it isn't a question necessarily of just going to the area and looking around. There may be some ground work to do if you want to be thorough. Of course, you'd have to believe that this isn't baloney.

I have a concealed weapon permit with reciprocity in most states and grew up in NH and familiar with the terrain. I would love to lend my services in situations like this but I only typically travel there once every few years.

Hopefully Renner, the Podcast guys and everyone else says safe when exploring tips like this.

    1. I still maintain that they shouldn't be the ones who have to do it. If law enforcement hasn't already looked into it, they should. I mean, Renner and the Podcast guys obviously are doing all that they can to solve this case. But they shouldn't be put at extremes like this. After all, they're just trying to help, while it's what we pay law enforcement specifically to do.

  20. I don't see this as anything, but who can know for sure.

Has anyone ever 'Google Street Viewed' the site and then progressed in the direction she would have ran or in the opposite for that matter?

There's not much there really unless you know where you're going, although it is beautiful. If I put myself there and think about running off into the woods or just around the bend to avoid cops, I would not go very far and I don't think she would have either. The foothills are steep and if there was snow you would make a very noticeable track, maybe more than footprints, more like a trudging path. Someone had to have picked her up or accidentally hit her miles down the road and decided to hide her body to cover their @$$.

You really can't preclude an opportunistic predator. Think about cases like John Walsh's kid. Totally a one in a million chance of it happening. The kid got shewed out of a store, separated from his mom and once outside the store a freak nabbed him and decapitated him. Its too much to think about as a parent, but it was nothing more than opportunistic predation.

Interestingly though, if you follow the road (112) you eventually get to Jigger Johnson campground. Not likely she was headed there, but she certainly knew the area.

Has anyone thought of Conway as her destination? Cabins seem more like a getaway or romantic rendezvous if you can afford it, but a hotel room is so much cheaper and she certainly knew this. If I failed to get a cabin I would think about my budget and the area and go for the cheapest options.

I really hope she has defied the odds and is living a new life under the radar somewhere. However the there is a greater chance of that not being true.

James, since you have not been barred from sharing the info you have learned, would you consider sharing it now?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Speculation:

If she pleaded the bud driver not to call the cops, was it because she herself didn't want to deal with it because she expected to be picked up. Or because she was trying to escape. Or because she just wanted to go away peacefully and never have to face legal problems?

That plea makes no sense to me when I try to think of why she took the trip. If it were a short vacay or shorts, she'd eventually have to face her problems when she returned.

Maybe this was supposed to be a nice multi day retreat to alleviate stress. I've been there. I think most people have.

  23. Dont get the big deal or paranoia on this one. You can be damn sure LE probably got w NH Fish and Game and probably other search and rescue types and checked out those coordinates. We or anyone that goes ate not finding anything new. The "danger", at least from a criminal standpoint, is overplayed and pure paranoia here. The podcast guys canceling their hike to this location due to threats is asinine. Let me ask this: Is this case a bigger deal on the internet or in the minds of the people in Rural NH??? The first one for sure! Somebody is messing with them who is probably sitting at home in Georgia or something. When you put all your intentions online prior, you get the idiots in their basements who get a rise out of saying they screwed up a podcast.

Now, are there dangerous people up there? Yes! Has there been some history of random violence in rural New England? Yes! But find me a place where there has not been! I hike up there all the time and i always carry a firearm but not because im afraid somebody connected to mauras case will jump out from behind a tree and kill me, its just good practice in the rurals where the police might be hours as opposed to minutes away.

If people up there were seeking to do harm to people working on this case, don't you think un 11 years they would have already done it? Get a grip people! If you go there, enjoy the hike, forget the paranoia and take normal precautions you would take in any wilderness area, for me personally that includes a handgun, it should for you too but not because of anything to do w Mauras case

  24. After listening to all the podcasts, reading this entire blog, post by post, and skimming older forums on Yuku, I'm convinced Maura did not run away. I'm hoping she did, but going by James' tone on the podcast concerning his new info, I think she met with foul play.

    But....

We all assume it's a male perp. What if it's a female? Or females? Little tidbits in the info we do have like the spotting of 3 girls in a store an hour before the NH crash, and Kate and Sara's flat refusal to talk about the so-called party and who was there. Maybe there was a get together, but something nefarious went down that caused a drunken Maura to flee back to her dad and wreck his car? Maybe, just maybe, Kate and Sara worked with Maura or drove tandem with her to NH in support, then something went down? There was a PI James spoke to who had worked the case who claimed Maura may have been raped in that dorm. Maybe that is why she fled back to daddy? Maybe Kate and Sara knew the guy or guys who did it, and chose to protect them instead of Maura? Maybe they coherced her to go to NH for a getaway, then did something....it's possible. Likely? Who knows. James believes it was someone close to her--not a family member.

The big flaw in this theory is dealing with Fred's actions with the 4k and why he happened to be up there that weekend; the exact weekend something happened.

The other theory that works is the Petri Vasi angle. It explains the 4k and the need to get out of UMASS.

i always see a couple people here who will vehemently deny that Maura could've possibly hit Petri. i'm not exactly sure why. damage to her car doesn't fit hitting a human being? i don't know. but it puzzles and annoys me that they are so adamant about it when we really don't know for sure.

    3. They cannot allow any reason to be propagated that could be seen as giving Maura a reason to have left school other than the reason the family, and their allies the ducks, propagate which is that Maura simply wanted to go away for a few days for some much needed rest and some terrible fate befell her at the hands of some "dirtbag."

  26. Random questions & thoughts (relative newbie here so please have patience):
    * What would make Maura so upset she became catatonic -- I think for someone capable of how she was acting at the time (theft, reckless, etc) it would have to be something well beyond bf issues, or even unwanted pregnancy...I think the hit-and-run.
    * Is LE taking a new look at the car....is that why it was moved recently?
    * If Maura walked 100 yds east on 112 and was picked up, wouldn't that likely be right in Butch's line of sight who was sitting outside in his bus?
    * We (public) do not know the number that called her cell in southern NH that day, correct?
    * Is it standard procedure for Red Cross employees to place official return calls from calling cards (maybe because it was outside normal biz hours??)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Don't waste your time on anything related to The Red Cross- even James says it's been verified as accurate. It WAS a RC employee calling to talk about Billy's leave of absence. That has been 100% verified via the Red Cross record's, the employee who called, etc. The number was from The Red Cross' call center.

    2. you bring up a good point about the yards and what would've been in Butch's line of sight (or even the Westmans', perhaps?). I'd like to know where exactly the dogs lost her scent on the road and if that spot was in anyone's line of vision (although even if it WAS that's not necessarily a guarantee they were looking at the moment she could've gotten into another vehicle)

  27. My mind was running overdrive in about a thousand directions with this and then I was like, wait a damn minute. Let's back way the heck up and look at this on the most basic level: it's binary.

Either these coordinates are actually meaningful to the case, or they are not.

If the coordinates *are* truly meaningful: Why are they meaningful? Who would know this? Who would send this particular, authentic information to James and why? Why send it with that e-mail address/why the apparent lack of transparency as to this person's ID? Why such vague context? Why hasn't the sender done anything about checking out those coordinates himself? Why was this shared in April 2014?

If the coordinates are *not* truly meaningful: Why that spot - is it actually random to the sender? Who is behind the e-mail + why the trolling, yo [besides the sender having all kinds of ~*~issues~*~ etc.]?

I'm inclined to think it's a bunch of rubbish, but I'm not afraid to check it out. It just looks like a pain to get to.

    Hmm.

Parting thought, leaking out from earlier brainstorm: Do these coordinates have any significance in relation to any particular content of Not Without Peril?

  28. Here are my thoughts...

One of the following scenarios must be true:

    1. Maura planned to fake her disappearance and escape to a new life
    2. Maura got lost in the woods and died
    3. Maura was murdered (chance encounter)
    4. Maura was murdered (pre-planned)

    Let's unpack each of these:

    1. I don't think, based on the evidence, that Maura intended to disappear, had enough motive to disappear or had the ability to plan and execute such an intricate escape plan. It really is difficult to just appear off the grid. All sorts of arrangements need to be made, finances, transport, accommodation etc. There are better, lower risk ways to stage your own disappearance than crashing your car on a road where cars pass you several times in a few minutes, potentially jeopardizing your plan. So this scenario is out for me personally.

    2. I don't think Maura just wandered into the woods on her own, and if she did she wouldn't have gone far. She was able to drive a long way, obey traffic signals, avoid cars, indications of someone who is cognitive / sober enough to at least have some rational thought. Now, the crash really was a soft one, I cannot fathom such a slight knock would put her in a daze where she doesn't know what is going on around her. Even if she was slightly drunk, slightly dazed, slightly embarrassed, slightly scared of a DUI, she would know not to wander off into the icy woods and hide somewhere stupid where she would succumb to the elements. She read 'Not Without Peril', her dad took her into the mountains many times, she knows enough not to be that stupid. This scenario also does not fit for me.

    3. This is what many people believe to have happened. I don't buy it. Firstly, the odds of a murderer driving by on that particular minute, that particular road, is just absolutely minuscule to the maximum. Also, Maura already declined assistance, she would hardly approach another vehicle straight after, which means that the murderer would somehow (almost in eyesight of the houses on the hill and potential passing cars) have to get out and somehow catch / subdue Maura without screaming or without a struggle. You could argue the person pulled a gun on her, but I just find the odds of a chance-murderer perfectly timed, subduing her in a perfect, silent, invisible manner, very very slight.

    4. This is what I think happened. I think someone was with Maura in the car. I think she was kidnapped or under someone's control. I also think this person had accomplices that knew of the kidnapping or that were following some distance behind. The car crash was either accidental or on purpose (on Maura's part), either way it derailed the kidnapper's plans. She was told to decline help when a vehicle pulled up, maybe under the threat that if she didn't he would shoot her or hurt loved ones, etc... I think certain elements were quickly arranged (rag-pipe etc) to confuse the police. She was taken under duress into the woods by the person to get her out of sight. From here I think she might have reached a point where she understood she is not coming back and struggled with the kidnapper. I believe she was then rendered unconscious or killed and the kidnapper hid her body while slipping out of the woods somewhere, picked up by someone he knew. Either that, or they were picked up straight after the initial guy left the scene.

Wild speculation, but yeah, those are my ideas.

  29. I am sorry but I cannot just toss out option three so quickly. I would like to know all the facts about the only person to have contact with her that night at the scene. Things happen fast and then it is all a cover up from there. Just saying so many bad things could have happened don't rule anything out to quickly especially when no body has been found( that is what keeps this case so cold)

  32. I've been following this blog for awhile too and really hoped for #1, but #4 is starting to work for me.

Eric, do you have any opinions on motive for kidnapping? I would think that somebody would have mentioned that Maura was feeling threatened by someone, that would be hard to keep quiet about.

But then again, nobody is talking (friends and family).

James, in any of your other investigations, did you run into such hostility and unwillingness to help?

I could understand everyone having to be quiet because the authorities have a suspect in mind but 11 years later, no arrests and no answers. Makes me think that everyone (friends and family) know exactly what happened to her and that she's not coming back.

If they had any hope at all, wouldn't they be telling everything they knew. Right from the jump, they've been silent. They know. IMHO
