Maura Murray or Troll?

This message came in yesterday. I immediately forwarded it to the Cold Case Unit and strongly urged them to speak with Blogger about tracking back the IP.

It reads: "Have you ever stopped to consider that I don't want to be found?"

If it's a troll, this crosses a line into Obstruction of Justice.

If it's Maura, my offer stands. If you can verify that you are safe, I will happily delete this blog. Everyone has the right to start over. Right now, police are still treating this as a potential homicide. They kind of need to know you're ok.

  1. Wow. Someone would have a lot of gall to fake a line like that. I hope an answer comes from this no matter what it is.

  2. Wow. If she doesn't want to be found, that's cool. She should still tell the police she's alive and well so they can close the case and her family can move on.

    1. True, it would be selfish of her to let her family and friends worry and wonder forever. Strangers CHOOSE to devote their lives to it, so that is in them.

but family always wonders, even if/when they're dysfunction.

    1. Yep. Because it couldn't *possibly* have been a random person, messing around being a jerk, like happens with almost every case that has national attention. It just has to be someone "in on it". Just like every person who disagrees with your theories are part of the coverup.

  7. I agree, if Maura is alive, then she needs to come out and let everyone know she's okay.
If its a troll, then they need to be found and told to stop because people are legimetly trying to find a Missing Person.
It also could be someone who knows the truth and knows she doesn't want to be found. If so, then its time for the Truth...there's alot of people missing and time and energy could be put into another case.
Could it be why Fred wanted nothing to do with a book and he's over it because he knows Maura doesn't want to be found.
I think if Mauras alive, she and who ever helped her run away didn't realize what this case would turn into.
Did Maura or anyone she knows , know someone in the vicinity of the crash site.
With the witnesses not seeing where Maura went but saw other activity at the Saturn, makes me wonder if she knew someone in the area.
I have always got the feeling if the crash was staged, then that spot was picked for a reason.
I find it ironic another woman disappeared at tha same interestection and years later it was found out she was alive and had just walked away.

Can you explain who you are talking about here?

      Delete
    2. any details on this other disappearance at the same curve?

I think it is highly improbable that the crash was staged. There were many easier ways to stage an accident (like jump out of the car before it hits a tree) and the site was far from MM's base; there is no evidence she even knew the spot and she was a terrible driver; the Westmans heard the crash; and the accident was pretty elaborate for staging. Whenever guys try to make their wife's death look like an accident (happens a few times on Forensic Files) they drive on a road they normally do and veer off the side and hit something on the wife's side, they don't deliberately go fast around a sharp curve on a road far from home...

    3. Jean Caccavaro- Disappeared in 1977 and re- appeared in 1984. She was married with 5 children. She ran away to start a new life and then came back. She was dropped off at intersection 112 and Rt. 116. I don't think its the same intersection bu its pretty close to where Maura disappeared. I'm not from the area so I'm not sure exactly how close.
In 1978 Claude Moulton married Caccavaro's daughter. As I recall, they were the ones living in the A frame house.

    5. JJmcgr, have you ever hit a tree with a car or jump out of a moving car? It's not pleasant. My friend intentionally crashed his car into a tree for insurance fraud wearing a helmet. He suffered a serious concussion and ended up in the hospital. He ended up having an MRI and wasn't cleared by a flight surgeon for 6 months. Not the wisest idea to stage an accident where you can be seriously injured. Can you expand on how the accident site was elaborate? From the accident report posted on this blog in 2011, the path she took appeared as if she intentionally sheered the snow bank on the inside part of the curve at a high rate of speed and ended up on the outside part of the curve in the ditch. There actually IS evidence they knew the site. They frequented the White Mountains at least on at least an annual basis - Fred admits to this and knew route 112 quite well.

Anonymous (8:34 AM): I agree with you the accident site was picked for a reason. I believe it was chosen because of the distance off the interstate - almost exactly 10 miles (10.1 to be exact). 10 miles would have put her in Butch Atwood's driveway. It's almost as if she set her trip odometer and at 10 miles began searching for the best spot to put it in the bank.

      Delete
    6. Maura did know the area. She had grown up, camping in the White Mountains/ and in the New Hampshire area.
I believe Clint said on one of the podcast, that Maura and Fred had just went on a long hike in Oct. 03 in New Hampshire. When they reached the top, Maura gave Fred an alcohol drink.
( A Beer, I believe) And most likely they had drove right by the spot Maura crashed and disappeared from.
As I recall, early on in the investigation Fred said Maura didn't know the area but its now known she did know the New Hampshire.

    1. My only retort to that is, the time between her accident and her vanishing is SO short. Now, if the accident was REAL, her adrenaline might have been going and she just got lucky with a car driving by and she would've hopped a ride with anyone. I mean, a school bus did drive by and cops were mentioned. She would've been feeling emotions.

Look at it this way if she was up there to clear her mind. She wrecked her car. She pleads with one person to not call the cops.

What was she planning to do since she didn't want the cops called? How would she have gotten home? By hitching a ride with a stranger, where did she plan to go if she had every intention of returning to Mass?

This definitely does point to runaway the more I think along this line.

ESPECIALLY if that story of of woman wanting shelter an hour or so north of there is Maura

She could have sweettalked a random driver to taking her somewhere or wherever they were going and then she went on foot.

Were there any locations of interest the date of the comment? Also, do you use Google Analytics? (I'm assuming so, as most bloggers do), and of so, same question- what location info are you getting from around the time the comment was posted? Have you ever considered transfering this over to a different host, like Wordpress, which allows you to see ALL IP addresses with each comment? You could host the site on wordpress, and just place a redirect on this web address so you'd be able to keep the same web address, but it would just show people the wordpress site. Is there a

  21. Probably a troll. Trolls are ignorant and actually a little sociopathic.

But let me comment on this:
"Everyone has the right to start over"

SOOOO, a person who molests 120 kids has a right to undergo full facial reconstruction, change their name, and start over?

    Get what I am saying?

We have a justice system for a reason. I am not saying I believe most people in jail should be there. Most should not. A couple teens in my town are currently being tried in a vehicular homicide case where their actions caused the death of their friend. They covered up evidence that were drinking. They NEED some sort of help, hopefully not actual prison or long

    Your generalization is BAD.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He meant people who actually CAN start over? And unfortunately, yes. This is America. Those are the rights handed down to us by the Founding Fathers. Everyone has rights. EVERYONE. Most people in jail for child molestation of 120 kids will never see the light of day. I don't think they have the means to start over. No jail I know offers plastic surgery. His generalization is absolutely true and accurate, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't talking about child molesters. Considering this is a case of someone who was undergoing great personal stress in her life and had every reason to want to start over. Sorry. No disrespect. But most people who start over start over for good reason. 120 kids...yeah. Don't think that guy would A: want to change who he is and B is not who this blog is about. That's not what he meant. I agree with your last paragraph, however. But it's the farthest thing from a bad generalization. Every American has rights.

  23. I doubt this is her.....I mean if she doesn't want to be found she wouldn't have put it on a blog because IP addresses are so easy to get. This would defeat her whole purpose of starting over somewhere......IF that is the case.

  24. Shaun Hornbeck did respond online in an online forum but I highly doubt that that is the case here. I would think that it is more or less a troll.

As far as the statement being an Obstruction Of Justice, I'd have to say that would more or less fall into a grey area. Yes you could track down the IP address and machine code and confront the person but at most they'd probably get a slap on the hand for being a bad troll. They're not really destroying evidence or doing something to halt an investigation, they're just being an annoying troll posing as Maura.

I've been following this blog for some time and still have no conclusions about what happened to Maura. I do agree that she was trying to leave her old life behind or maybe even go to the ski resort at the end of the road to get away from everyone for a while. There's so many puzzle pieces which is why this case is so intriguing to everyone. If she is in hiding, she has done a very good job of doing so by cutting off all forms of communication. I would have to eventually contact my family somehow to let them know I'm okay.

Which is more or less what happened to Alden Olson. He upped the game from troll to harasser. But the cops told Renner they could do nothing until Olson "showed up on his doorstep". I've seen this repeated many times elsewhere. I don't know how a restraining order would be applied here; I'm sure JR looked into it.

  27. I agree with the folks who think this is someone just playing sort of a sick practical joke. I don't really think she's alive, but I think if she were, and wanted to be left alone, she actually wouldn't have sent this and risk blowing her cover. I doubt that the person that sent this realizes that it could be considered an obstruction of justice, they probably think its just a sort of teasing, harmless, so sick, prank.

  29. Definitely a troll, but don't waste your time or energy pursuing "obstruction of justice" claims. Whatever authorities you report this "crime" to might get quite a kick out of the idea, though.

  30. I have to admit, not knowing what transpired or why or where she is would be perfectly alright - I do hope to come to this site shortly and have it deleted :-) The knowledge (hopefully there will be a last post stating it) that she is OK will be great news and a happy ending to a cold case I have been completely intrigued by since I saw it on the first episode we watched of Investigation Discovery's "Disappeared". It was the first investigative show we saw with so much mystery that simply did not have a conclusion. My Wife and I were totally shocked when it ended without any answers. Would love to finally have one.- and a good one at that!

As far as the poster, if anyone has ever watch an investigative documentary, then you know often times, a perpetrator will often stay close to the case, even offering tips or information to the police. This is an attempt to keep an eye on the investigation to see if they are getting close or if they can give false information to the police to lead them in a different direction. If Maura is alive and disappeared to start over, I would not doubt she is keeping tabs on the investigation to see if anyone is getting close, especially if she does not want to be found. From her traning at West Point, she may be keenly aware that IP addresses and phone numbers are easily traced, as well as post marks, so she may have been really hesitant to reach out to law enforcement all these years. But as a person gets older, they tend to mature in a lot of ways - she could have just gotten tired of keeping track or frustrated at it and finally said something. However, it could have easily been a troll as well - for a variety of reasons, most already mentioned...

    ReplyDelete
  31. I've got to believe it's a troll. Assume for a moment that Maura Murray really is alive, and living a low-key life somewhere. Why would she make contact with a person who is a high profile investigator to the case? That wouldn't make any sense at all. It would alert everyone to the fact that she is still alive. But right now, no one knows one way or another with 100% certainty whether she is alive or dead.

Also, if she really wanted to not be found, all she'd have to do is contact the police and let them know there was no foul play involved in this case, and she wants to be left alone. After all, it's not a crime for an adult to disappear.

So unless this person can offer some type of proof to the contrary, it's a troll. So let's keep on looking for her or getting closure one way or another. If by a (very) slim chance that this really is Maura, then the best way to get everyone to stop looking is to alert the police and tell them to call off the investigation. It's that simple. But I'd be willing to bet money that this isn't Maura. So no chance of that happening.

She could have notified the police already, which is why they haven't released much info, her friends are silent, maybe the Westmans were told "Hey, she's alive and trying to escape from such and such problem. It might be her (Hi, Maura!) 😃

    ReplyDelete
  34. Also, how can Maura get in touch with you for verification if she doesn't want to be found? In this electronic age, it's difficult not to be traced.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Makes no sense that this obstructs justice. If right now no one is confident a crime committed then how can obstruct something that didn't happen.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A crime doesn't have to have been confirmed as having been committed to be obstructing justice; if you are interfering with a police investigation into a potential crime, you are obstructing justice. It doesn't matter if Maura ran away, or she was abducted and killed, the fact that the police are investigating it as a possible crime means that if you are purposely giving false information or getting in the way, you are obstructing justice.

The term justice doesn't just imply that someone is or will be charged with a crime. Justice would also be the satisfactory resolution of a case regardless of the outcome; which would also include finding a missing person alive who had left of their own accord.

First of all, there are ways to block those pesky identifying things such as IP addresses, but also what you really have to consider is what WOULD get someone to come out of hiding if they intentionally disappeared? Probably someone asking questions and getting a little to close to possibly finding the answer and you. Like, oh I don't know, maybe James? So it's not out of the realm of possibility that she would take the risk to post if she felt like she were in danger of being discovered. If she's going to do it after all these years, this could very well have been the catalyst..

  39. For what it's worth here is my theory on what happened to Maura....

I think she did hit Petrit Vasi on February 6th and that is what caused her to be so visibly distraught on the job. I think that when she said "my sister" maybe she meant she wanted to call her sister, considering from what I have read the 2 were pretty close and confided in one another and the fact that she had just spoken with her sister a few hours ago. I also don't believe there ever was a party on February 7th I think that was completely fabricated, if anything I think maybe Maura told her two closest friends about hitting Petrit Vasi and the 3 of them got together to figure out what to do. I think Maura's 2:30am drive to her father's hotel room was so that she could confess what she had done, especially if she had been drinking, I don't know about anyone else but when I get drunk I can get sentimental and reflective sometimes, as you all know alcohol lowers your inhibitions so after a dose of liquid courage she decided to tell her father about Petrit Vasi. The accident with her father's car on the way was just an unfortunate accident that cemented in Maura's mind that she was in too deep and needed a way out. Fred and Maura formulated a plan for Maura to disappear vs facing serious charges for the hit and run of Petrit Vasi. From that point on several things were done to throw people off the trail so to speak (ie: searching online for places to stay, packing up dorm room and so on). I do not think that Billy was involved I think the email left for him was to make him believe that she left because he cheated on her. Everything was in place to make it seem that she just wanted to get away for a few days. Fred told her to put the rag in her tailpipe so that she would be able to drive her car to her getaway destination and then the accident on Rt 112 happened........ from this point I think she fled from the scene on foot and hitched a ride at some point. From here it could go one of two ways the person she hitched a ride with could have killed her or could be holding her captive somewhere (which after the Ariel Castro case is not out of the realm of possibility unfortunately) or she could have continued to hitchhike, taken buses, whatever to get far enough away that she was able to start a new life. Either way I think her father and her 2 friends knew about the plan to disappear which is why they have been so tight lipped about everything. It was self preservation. They knew she committed a crime and assisted her leaving to avoid prosecution, therefore incriminating themselves. If they admitted the truth they could be charged as well. From everything I have read and seen Maura's family and friends are NOT acting like a family looking for a missing person. If that were my daughter I would do whatever it took, talk to whoever I could, whenever I could to bring that person home. I would not be concerned with airing family dirty laundry if it meant bringing my daughter home, leave no stone unturned. This was not the case for Maura. Obviously the family had to do something, especially after the accident on Rt 112, so they did just enough not to cause suspicion (and failed in that respect imo) and to the casual observer seemed to be desperately searching for their daughter. I call BS.

    1. My favorite theory is that she was never in the car, she fled prior to the accident in a car purchased the weekend before and someone else ditched that Saturn. Kinda my own story I made up but it could work, I mean really who was the last person to confirm seeing her that isn't a friend or family? He manager at the call center? We have found out the boyfriend was pretty awful and maybe this thing wasn't supposed to snow ball like this and was just meant to be a way to get away from the boyfriend. They tried to ditch the car where no one would notice and then bam this thing goes viral.

    2. I completely agree with this, though, I would add that I think that Sara and Kate were traveling with her. I agree that the accident on Rt 112 changed the original plan which is why Fred changed his tune from "please come home" to "a local dirtbag grabbed her" after talking with one of the girls.

    3. Give me the motive for running away. - Tell me why she will leave family and friends behind.
Tell me how she got a good fake ID - or did she plan on working grunt jobs for cash her whole life, and was planning on never getting arrested again? To get any half way decent job a background check is needed.
Tell me how someone who as it seems has got caught doing everything little thing - now is able to pull off this great disappearance.
This great disappearance is so important that the only thing she needs to make it work is alcohol? Doesn't take many belongings and as it seems leaves her computer behind - so she can be tracked.
A runaway theory makes no sense unless you think she just ran away from her crash site to avoid police and ended up too deep into the woods.

I've strongly thought this is well. Whatever it was, she didn't have a breakdown over a call.

Then, apply JR's notion or abduction. I seriously doubt she simply ran in the woods. Even if she was intoxicated, she would have eventually gone for help.

May The Murrays find their daughter.

    5. The motive for running away was that she hit Petrit Vasi leaving him seriously injured and fled the scene - this is a very serious crime that most likely would have resulted in jail time for Maura. I honestly don't think she did leave friends and family behind - I think they were all involved in the plan for Maura to disappear which would explain their secretive behavior. It would not have been that hard to get a fake ID or even assuming someone else's identity. It happens more than you think. The alcohol was to throw everyone off the trail, just as the searches on the computer were. There is no way that she could have disappeared that quickly without a trace without a vehicle being involved. The police arrived within minutes and there was absolutely no trace of her, no footprints, nothing. She was picked up by someone now whether that person helped her or harmed her is the BIG question but her intentions to run were quite clear after you look at the big picture.

    6. Further, I'm a bit flabbergasted at the possibility she did hit Vasi and fled. It's not just the obstruction of justice, it's if she had to go to trial she'd have a good case: Vasi was drunk (I think) and she couldn't react in time. It's not as if SHE was drunk. She had nothing to gain from fleeing.

Incidentally, I've read Massachusetts has a hit and run problem overall.

    7. Thank you. Just makes no sense . She's not out there living a secret life, though I wish she were.

    8. She may have had a good case had she stayed at the Petrit Vasi scene instead of leaving...and with her other accident coupled with being on probation she could be facing some serious charges. Petrit Vasi was in a coma for a month so this was not a minor accident from my research he still suffers the affects of the accident to this day. That's a huge motivation to want to get out of dodge imo.

    9. It seems to elaborate, why didn't she just walk out the door never to be seen again, instead of all this drama?

  41. If she is alive, I'm sure she is familiar with this blog. If Maura wanted to make herself known through this blog, she would have done it before now. It seems logical that not wanting to be found, she has chosen to remain completely silent.

    This is obviously a troll.

  42. My psychic powers tel me that Maura is neither alive nor dead. This message comes from someone who is acting on her behalf. I have had many dreams about this case and my dreams have told me that Maura was abducted by someone who has a lot of ties in the law enforcement community. These people are complicit in a large ring of human trafficking and it goes higher than anyone can imagine. Maura was not alone when she left Massachusetts and she was long gone before the accident in Haverhill. The neighbor who said that the girl inmaura's picture is not the girl he saw was correct. This elaborate scheme has been performed thousands of times and there are high level officials covering it up. No one will ever get close enough to the truth without sacrificing their life, that you can bet on. There are lots of trolls lingering on any site related to this who will purposely lead you in the wrong direction. And people who get too close will face constant threats on their life and their families. Anyone investigating this please be careful. Maura Murray is never coming back, and the more pressure certain people feel the more her life is in danger, as is the life of anyone who gets too close in this investigation. -this is just what my psychic senses tell me. I could be completely off,(this would be the first time). Just be careful.

    1. Sounds as if this was posted through Lori Bruno.

This analysis seems a follow up to the podcast with much more specific information. What do you think, JR? Look into this?

These "trolls" should be handled a bit differently here, as the "obstruction of justice" still stands. Further, they should be thoroughly vetted.

  43. Ask Kate and Sara. I suspect them knowing alot more to this than anyone else and certainly more than they have told in the past.

  45. If that really was Maura.... how would you feel? Were supposed to be her friends. But when she speaks up we say she's a troll.

    Just a thought,

    Trolled N Dupeified

  46. I get your point, James, about the person who sent this email crossing a line. But it is not obstruction of justice. I can't find the NH statute online, but generally and uniformly across states and under federal law there are common elements: (1) a judicial case must be either in progress or pending; (2) the accused person must know that there is a case proceeding or pending; and (3) the accused has to corruptly influence the administration of justice.

For one thing, no judicial case proceeding is in progress or pending. It is widely agreed across jurisdictions that an investigation is not a judicial proceeding (i.e., different arm of government.)

More importantly, even if there were a judicial proceeding in progress, I don't think any court would say that an email to a journalist is corrupt tampering with administration of justice. Statutes generally point to trying to influence juries, bribing prosecutors and stuff like that.

I do know from reading an NH case that the NH statute is quite narrowly defined, so - at a minimum - NH does represent a broad exception to this overall paradigm. Maybe this email is a crime under some NH statute, but not obstruction of justice.

    1. Pssst John ... good post but you should've sent this to JR privately. No aid or comfort for the troll. Follow John Smith's advice here: Make 'em uncomfortable.

For the record, you're among the top 3 contributors here, thanks.

    2. Posing as a missing person who is presumed to have been murdered is tantamount to confessing to a crime, which is very much obstruction of justice.

    3. I am pretty sure it is a troll, if Maura wants it to be known she is alive, I think she would do it another way, I think if the cold case squad could release just a bit more info that was not made public, it could quicken their investigation.

  47. I have no idea of the relevance of this, but I have noticed that Disappeared never plays the Maura Murray episode! I know this because I always record and watch for the repeats, but they never see that episode. I wonder if for some reason they were asked not to play it? For example, the police have evidence that she is living in Canada or something?

  48. It's not obstruction of justice, not even close.

  50. It can't be disproved it's not Maura, which means it can't be proved it's a troll, if we just knew her style of writing it would help.

  51. I'm just wondering why it's presumed she went to Canada, when she told her track coach she needs to run away to Mexico? Is it because her car is found in proximity to Canada?

  54. Back a few pages ago, one commenter talked about a black, frozen knapsack filled with books having been found at Pemigewasset Overlook. These coordinates are quite close to there, for what it's worth.

  55. James has been reaching out to Maura to contact him for years. Why is it so unfathomable this could have been her or someone close to her? I doubt she's completely unaware of James' efforts. We unfortunately live in a society that automatically assumes anything of shocking context can't be true. Am I saying it's her? No, of course not. I don't know. No one does. But I don't think it should automatically be dismissed as troll work just because there are trolls out there. From what I believe, Maura is out there too. There are good arguments for both sides, but it shouldn't be automatically dismissed. Great work, James!
