Cracked Profiles Maura Murray Mystery

Cracked writes about the "5 Weirdest Disappearances" today and Maura Murray is on the front page. Check it out.

One note: I do not think she committed suicide, as the article suggests.

  1. They also messed up on the sobbing phone call to Billy.

  2. I guess any exposure to the story is good, but hasn't the 'creepy' answerphone message they refer to been debunked as not true?

    Ps..I've pre-ordered the book!

  3. Funny that the "phone call to Billy" keeps getting mentioned in different articles, I thought that call was traced back to a number other than Maura's?

    1. It was the Red Cross arranging his leave as they do for some military officers. It was thoroughly proven if you trust Mr. Renner, which I do.

  4. Do you believe she was the person who turned up on a door step north of there? (running from 2 men I think the story went)

Thing is, Maura didn't has a "different" appearance. She blends well. And unbathed, in distress, she would've looked like any brunette.

I think someone in NH killed her.

  5. and...that is why people should do research - and check their sources. Especially a media outlet like Cracked -

  6. Yeah about that phone call Billy received where they think it's Maura, they are many sources that still suspect it was her, such as the Disappeared episode as well as her Charley Project page.

    1. I think because there's not a 'whole lot of resources or solid information about the case, there are many seemingly reputable sources that still report parts of the original investigation, suspicions, etc...even when they have been disproven. I can understand the Disappeared episode leaving it in for shock factor, but I'm going to drop an email to the Charley Project, because that information is downright incorrect. That call was THOROUGHLY investigated by police, and traced directly back to the person that called. That's not something that can be faked. Police have stated exactly who the call was from, and it was background noise on the answering machine from the phone not being fully hung up at the time of the "beep".

  7. Yes, I will shamefully admit to being a somewhat regular Cracked reader, and their articles don't always seem to be 100% fact checked. Its not surprising they would leave in the phone call as it makes the story a lot more mysterious than it already is.

  8. How many cases has the NH Cold Case unit solved since it was formed? And how does that compare to the national average ? Is it time to make changes there through public policy?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There are over one hundred unsolved cold cases in NH. To my knowledge, four cases have been "solved" but in one case the suspect was found not guilty. The other three were solved from DNA testing, and one of those suspects is already dead. So, no, they do not have a good track record for solving murders. The case they are working on now, the one getting the most attention, is the unidentified woman and three young girls found in or near large barrels in the woods behind Bear Brook State Park in Allenstown, NH.

  9. Maura sounds exactly like my ex. She is a Histrionic Personality Disorder and it felt like reading my whole relationship over again while reading about Maura and the facts around the case. She would fabricate stories, was promiscuous, told others we were split while sleeping with them, had alcohol and other problems, claimed to be suicidal and a lot. She craved attention, but not in the way that most think, even negative attention she grabbed onto because in the end it was attention. What better way to be dramatic and keep the attention than to go missing and then drop by forums and such ever to so often to drop hints and to make sure people still know her name and are searching? It's left me beyond words, seeing the similarities between her and my ex.

    1. I'm sorry that you dislike your ex but this assumption is not helpful and disrespectful. It sounds like Maura was acting erratic before her disappearance but there has not been any mention that she always acted this way and has a personality disorder. Bash your ex somewhere else.

      Delete
    2. Yes, well said " go bash him somewhere else" and don't use this case to analyze what is pure speculation regarding Maura.

    3. If you've ever dealt with a person with a personality disorder, you will see that it describes Maura. She is a classic case of BPD, just by going by the facts of her life.

      Delete
    4. BPD can be hard to diagnose even for trained mental health professionals. There is no way to diagnose Maura without a full bio/psycho/social assessment which none of us has. It does no good to throw around arm chair Internet diagnoses like that and it's disrespectful.

  12. New to the site (thanks, Cracked!) Being interested in matters geographical something struck me as odd concerning Maura's inquiries into lodgings. After being unable to rent the condo in Bartlett, NH she called the recording about lodgings in Stowe, VT. Given that Bartlett and Stowe are 100 miles apart it's rather unlikely that she was traveling north to meet up with someone. If her rendezvous were in the Bartlett area she wouldn't have looked for a place in Stowe after striking out in Bartlett, while if she'd been planning a meeting in Stowe she wouldn't have looked in Bartlett in the first place. It's more likely that she just wanted to head north for some reason and wasn't as much concerned with exactly where.

    1. Me too! If it wasn't for the cracked article I probably wouldn't have spent hours reading up on the case too.

Maura actually grew up a town over from me and was only a few months older than me.

    2. For ironrailsironweights:

If I remember correctly, cell tower records indicate someone called her (but she didn't answer) around the time she would've been driving. If she was meeting someone & that's the person who called, maybe they knew they wanted to meet but just didn't know where yet. Maybe Maura told the person to call her at a certain time to see if she'd found a place.

      It at least seems possible...?

  13. Before the Accident
    * breakdown at work, escorted to dormroom by her supervisor Karen Marriott. She lied to Karen and told her she had a roommate. Why did she lie?
    * Fred comes to town with 4,000, that he withdrew from 8 different ATMs for Maura a new car.
No new car, no one remembers seeing them, Kate said that night Maura didn't mention anything about getting a new car. But Maura and Fred had been shopping all day.
    * Maura and Kate go to a party at Sara's dormroom. Kate and Sara don't remember anyone else that was there. Maura left around 2 am and wrecked the Toyota around 3 am. What was Maura doing in that hour? Why did she need to go to Fred's hotel room at 3 in the morning?
    * Maura calls Billy from Fred's phone at 4:49 am. Supposedly she left her phone at Sara's. Who called in the Toyota accident since Maura had no phone?
    * Maura goes to work on Sunday @ the Art Gallery. Sara said Maura didn't mention anything about wrecking her dads car.
    Day of disappearance
    * Maura Mapquests directions to Berkshire and Burlington Vermont.
    * she calls a condo place, in Bartlett, NH inquiring about a place to stay
    * she calls a hotel information line for Stowe, Vermont.
    * e- mails her professors and supervisors, that she was going to be gone for a week, due to a death in the family. Which there was no death in the family.
    * she does a search for alcohol effects on a fetus
    * her dormroom was packed up with the Art off the wall
    * Maura left UMASS for the last time
    * she withdrew 280.00 from the ATM and bought 40.00 worth of alcohol.
    * before her phone was shut off, there was a call that hit off the Londonberry tower in NH
    The Accident
    * Faith calls 911 @ 7:27 pm. She States car in ditch, I see a man smoking a cigarette on the passenger side. It has been said that some of Maura's family members told the Westmans it wasn't a cigarette but the light off her cellphone or car charger. If Mauras phone is off, then there shouldn't be any light on. Was the charger plugged in? If it wasn't then it couldn't of been the light from that.
    * the Marriott's said they saw the car back up parallel with the road.
    * Butch had his wife Barbara call 911 at 7:43 pm. She said the female didn't appear to have injuries but was shook up. Butch said she asked him not to call the police because she had called AAA. There's no service in the area.
    * witness said once butch left they saw a flurry of activity at the trunk area.
    * there was a rag in the tailpipe, that was from Maura's emergency kit(Fred made her) in the trunk. Who would of known Maura had a rag in an emergency kit in her trunk?
Police showed up around 7:53 and there was no one there.
    * RO said there was a red truck in the area with Mass plates, that acted like they were looking for someone. They passed by her, as she walked to the Stage Shop.
    * a cashier from Butsons (turned into a shaws, several months prior) said she believe she saw Maura with two friends an hour before the wreck. They bought alcohol and cigarettes and all had out of state licenses.
    * in Maura's car a Shaws shopping bag was found
    * supposedly back window was cracked, which in one of the pictures of the Saturn, you can see the back window is down a bit.
What are we missing here? Is most of it a quincendance and doesn't matter or is there a connection somewhere that has been missed?
Who called Maura within a 22 mile radius of the Londonderry tower?
Kate said she didn't find out about Maura being missing until her track coach told them on Feb. 14 04.
Sara said she found out by the news.
There suppose to be her Best Friends at UMASS, so why didn't anyone contact them to see if they had seen Maura and when was the last time they had saw her?
Why was the ATM video, never released?

    1. Where did you read the part about her looking up the effect of alcohol on a fetus and how no one saw her father nor Maura car shopping?

      This is news to me!

    2. Interesting to see this list. What stands out for me is the search for effects of alcohol on the fetus. Implies she was pregnant. Maybe she intentionally was drinking to try to abort babie and died of alcohol poisioning in the woods?

If she was seen at Bustons buying alcohol with her friends surely they know where she was going and what she was doing and possibly what happened to her. I would bring them in for questioning.

  16. I do not buy the theory that she ran away. Although I tend to sway towards different theories every few weeks, as many other do, so I guess that statement doesn't always hold true. But something about the way this Cracked piece was written sparked something in my brain regarding the accident in Fred's car 2 nights before... almost as if that was a planned accident, and part of a "plan" that went wrong... it flew out of my mind as quickly as it flew in though, so I can't quite build upon it... but it's an angle I hadn't thought of... maybe someone else can finish formulating the thought!

I have one thing to say: I'm glad there is no statute of limitations on murder in NH, even though the time ran out on Manslaughter 5 years ago. Maybe Sara and/or Kate will be brought to trial someday. I believe they were both with her before, during and after her death.

Majority of times women are ashamed. That might explain her erratic behavior. Maybe the trip was to get an abortion and recuperate away from everyone?

    1. I gotta feeling that's exactly what the flurry of calls was about.

Not only that, she may have LOST the baby, hence the upset Thursday night. A spontaneous abortion. She was no big drinker, but perhaps she was looking online not looking forward, but BACK as the reason the body rejected the unborn in the first place. Sometimes it just happens regardless.

I think the true purpose her father was up there was emotional support for whatever reason. Go ahead, speculate. The car was secondary. He probably had reservations to get her one after Saturday morning, I sure would, but felt compelled because of whatever else was going down.

      Yeah, I know.

Wonder if Stowe, Vermont or Bartlett, NH has a late term abortion clinic there or close by.
Wasn't there a medical questionare form found in Maura's car dated Feb. 5 04? If so, this was the day of the breakdown at work.

  22. It's increasingly obvious that the story of Maura Murray, as told and retold on the Web, has left the realm of sober fact and entered the world of legend and myth. For some, it is a classic conspiracy myth. For others, it is various kinds of cautionary tale. For many, it seems a modern version of the old ballads of Tam Lin or Thomas the Rhymer, which tell of the abduction of mortals by mystical beings.

This is not to say that no-one still cares about the actual facts. Law enforcement does. I believe that Mr Renner does. But mundane realities are always at a disadvantage once they are forced to compete with myths and legends. To remain focused on the mundane realities requires an act of will, consciously made and diligently maintained.

  23. What if Kate and Sara know she's dead, were there when she died, dumped the body in the woods somewhere farther away... And then told Fred that she ran off and they couldn't ever find her....surely, by now he must be wondering if that was true....

    1. Ive wondered about this too. Supposedly Sara and Kate told fred the real story and he asked them to never repeat it. But like you said, what if the story they gave isn't really the truth.
Kate said she didn't find out about Maura's disappearance until 5 days later by there track coach on Sat.
Sara said she found out by the news. They were Maura's 2 best friends at UMASS , so Why did it take so long for them to find out about Maura's disappearance??

  24. If someone could get in Freds head and convince him not to trust those two girls, maybe he would push them farther for more info. If anyone can get anything out of them, it would be him.

  25. Sara and Kate know nothing. Leave them alone, already. If they had any important info we would know why she went to NH. Maura was not the type to talk about her problems with friends. Also, just like the Cracked story, you cannot believe everything you read here, either. One thing I have wondered, was Maura's room packed because she needed more money to stay in school? Sometimes students are expected to pay for part of their tuition, minus loans and other financial aid. Maybe Fred was getting money so she could stay in school. Just a thought.

    3. Jody, what works for me, if it's fact, is that Maura never really UNPACKED from Christmas break. Perhaps her pop was delivering more stuff. Perhaps Mr Murray was there simply to give her encouragement to stick to school, don't drop out.

I've always wondered why Maura didn't want Karen to see her room Friday morning. Was she unpacked? Packed? Did Maura not want Karen to read into whatever state Maura's room was in?

  27. Mr Renner and Mr Green--

Did anything ever come of this comment found at http://mauramurray.blogspot.com/2015/10/long-lost-articles-provide-fresh.html?m=1

    "Northampton SmithOctober 13, 2015 at 10:23 AM
I knew this clique of girls when I was working in Northampton, MA. I hung out with them now and again and am still in contact with a couple people who were other members of this group.

We have a theory, but it's been formed more by knowing a few of the people involved and less about knowing all the details.

There were two cars along for the ride from the beginning. I think Sara was driving Maura's borrowed car and hit Petrit Vasi.

I don't think Maura knew that this had happened and I think she was upset because her car was damaged and she was already in trouble with her father/the law.

Once the three girls (Sara, Kate and Maura) got together and talked over the situation I think they planned to drive the Saturn to NH, dump it and then return home in the second car.

This would explain Maura buying a large quantity of alcohol and looking for rooms that housed more then one person.

I believe Sara, Kate and Maura alternated driving the two vehicles. I also believe that as the drinking, driving and stress of the night continued that Maura and Sara (probably, but not neccesarily) got into a physical altercation. I also believe that the mystery phone call came from the tandem car.

I believe that Maura was driving and that Sara was in the back seat lying down. I think that as they were arguing Sara (who was known to be physical) attacked her from behind causing her to crash the vehicle. This also would explain why there was no damage to the passenger side's windshield. It would also be possible that Sara was passed out in the back and Maura simply crashed the car, although the Sara that I knew was quite the hot head when she drank.

When the bus driver stopped to check on things I believe Maura was unconcious and he spoke to Sara. I think that they had been following Kate, who would have been past the site at the scene of the crash. She doubled back, picked up Sara and helped move Maura into the car.

At this point, I think that the two of them probably thought Maura was ok, but probably started to freak out about the hit and run and combined with the alcohol (drugs?) decided she was dead and got rid of the unconscious/dead/injured body because there was nowhere to get medical help way out there (and it is in the middle of nowhere) and they were already spooked over the hit and run (maybe Kate was in the car as well?).

Once an injured person was left out in those elements they wouldn't last long. I also think that the missing alcohol was moved from the Saturn or it was already in the other car. As for the body not being found it may have been moved by wildlife or it may still be there or (I doubt it) it may have been moved.

It would be interesting to know if the coke bottle had been fingerprinted or if it was picked up without care due to this not being a homicide/missing person investigation right away.

One thing I so know is that Sara was a smoker. Kate and Maura were not. I seem to remember reading something about a witness seeing someone smoking in the car.

Anyway, not sure if any of this is true. It's odd to have something like this happen to someone you kind of knew a little bit.

Last time I ran into Sara I can tell you that she is nothing like she was back then when she was kind of hot."

    6. I agree. The person who wrote this comment, might have some insight on how Kate, Sara, And Maura were. Maybe knew some of the other people they all hung out with.
(Perhaps some of the people, who were at the Sat night Party, that Sara and Kate can't remember anyone else that was there)
Interesting they say Sara was a Smoker. ( Butson sighting of three women an hour before the crash, they bought alcohol and Cigs, and the back window being cracked) which most people don't have a back window cracked unless someone is smoking, exspecially in the winter, and then Faith originally said on her 911 call that she sees a man smoking a cigarette on the passenger side. I find people's original statements to be closer to the truth then later on statements that have changed from the original story. Perhaps the police told Faith to say that's not what she saw.
When Faith made the 911 call, she wouldn't of had any idea to not say what she saw. JMO

I was rereading original statements and early media articles yesterday. Faith Told a reporter years ago that she never said it was a man. She didn't say or know who it was, just that it was a person and possibly lit end of a cig in the car.

    8. Oh wow!! That sounds very plausible. Maybe the friends could have lied to Mr. Fred about what happened to Maura? Maybe he believed them and he thinks it was a boyfriend who took her and it was their friends doing? This case has so many twists and turns!

    9. Kassandra- in the 911 call log, it says Faith Westman says she can see a man smoking on the passenger side. This is what the 911 operator wrote down as Faith saying. Yes Faith later said she didn't know what the red light was and whether it was man or not.
But why would the 911 operator put this down, if it wasn't what was said?
Maybe the police told her to not talk about it, or maybe she was tired of people telling her that's not what she saw. Believe it was said that Mauras family said it wasn't a CIG but the light off the phone or charger.

      Delete
    10. A light from a cig that's being smoked would change in depth of color when the person inhaled. It would get brighter as they inhaled. A light from a cell phone or charger would be a consistent color. Also, a "flurry" of activity around the trunk sounds like more than one person to me. Just some thoughts.

  28. LOL, there is no way wildlife moved her 100-something pound body before searchers could find it. The only possible animal, besides a person, that could do that (and it likely wouldn't) would be a black bear and that time of year the bears are hibernating.
