Did Maura Murray Hit Petrit Vasi?

The new information on Vasi's hit-and-run is confounding like everything else in this mystery. But, to me, it supports my opinion that Maura could not have been responsible for the accident and that her car was not involved. Here's the breakdown as I see it:

Circumstantial Evidence Supporting Maura's Involvement:

- The old messageboard post where someone "close" to Maura said she hit Vasi and then fled to avoid prosecution, and the "confirmation" from a supposed member of the family.

- Maura's breakdown at work around the time of Vasi's accident.

- The damage to Maura's Saturn is consistent to the type of damage a car might sustain in the event of hitting a body.

- There was an extra headlight taillight bulb in Maura's car when it was found in Haverhill.

- It gives Maura motive to flee.

Circumstantial Evidence Suggesting Maura Was Not Involved:

- The paint chips found on Vasi do not seem to match Maura's car

- If her car was damaged before her trip to New Hampshire she took a BIG risk leaving when it was still light out. Would she really drive with a blown airbag, cracked windshield, and dented car all the way to NH without someone getting suspicious?

- The accident in Haverhill was not staged. No way.

- There was no broken glass on Maura's car. If we're talking about a busted headlight, it would have been plastic shards and not bits of glass.

- Maura had other motive to flee and had talked about starting a new life before (in conversation with Hoss Baghdadi).

** If you have any information about the person responsible for Petrit Vasi's hit and run accident, please contact Amherst Police, Vasi himself, or this blog. **

there was NOT a spare headlight in the car. The 2 bulbs found are for tail light, back up and directional signals.

  2. JR, good to see you can take hours of work and coin and still disqualify a theory. In the end, the ANSWER is paramount, not the effort behind that discovery.

As always, we have to let the chips fall where they may. That's what's going to solve this. Egos, misinformation and posturing will only create strong headwinds against resolution.

    Keeping an open mind here.

Q: how do you explain the accident reconstructionist say she didn't hit a tree?

Q: How do you know the glass came from the vehicle and not off the street?

I am baffled that your rebuttal is so weak

I'm not sure where the whole "she hit a tree" thing came from. If you look back at some of the very first reports, it doesn't mention she hit a tree. I think because a ribbon was placed on a tree by the accident site, it was assumed. I know the Westman's have publicly stated it was a tree she hit as well, adding to the assumptions. I do agree with the accident reconstructionists, who have said the damage isn't consistent with hitting a tree. About 10 years ago I was driving with a friend in her Neon, and spun out on black ice, hitting a small--yet fairly solid-- snowbank. The damage was almost identical to Maura's car, minus the windshield crack. I tend to agree with the theory that it's much more likely it was in fact the snowbank she hit. Because a reconstructionist says the damage is not consistent with a tree strike doesn't solidify in any way that the accident was staged (or, that it wasn't). Researching the aftermath of auto accidents, I have yet to come across any damage from a tree strike that looks like Maura's. I have come across many snowbank collisions that look like hers, as well as other things, such as hitting the back of a higher vehicle with a trailer hitch, etc.

    2. the rebuttal of the rebuttal is rather weak as well. What odes hititing a tree or not have to do with staging? The closests witnesses told the podcast guys the car didn't hit a tree. Packed snow can be pretty tough if you car wacks into it at excessive speed. Most streets I travel on are not naturally covered with shards of glass. Most cars that hit something in the front end up with broken glass.

  4. If you tell us that NH LE has compared the paint samples and they do not match then I would lean much more to your suggestion that she wasn't involved.

I have heard in a few forums that after airbag deployment the car wont run as a safety measure. I don't know what this involves, the fuel line maybe?

    1. Airbag deployment generally won't prevent a car from being driven. The blown bag in front of the wheel will be an annoyance to the driver, and in any event a crash severe enough to deploy the airbags usually will cause enough other damage to render the car inoperable.
More to the point, hitting a pedestrian normally will not blow a car's airbags because there isn't sufficient deceleration.

    2. If true, that a car won't start after air bag deployment, then the airbags must not of deployed when the person hit Vasi.

  6. Were there any other hit and runs around Thurs Jan. 29 04? In Maura's last e-mail to her high school friends on Thurs 1-29 she says "Maybe I can lighten the e-mail mood, UMASS has crosswalks with pretty much railroad barriers because so many people have been hit/ had accidents. I think there were 7 last year. Not much to say about the rashes though." This was wrote exactly one week before Maura had the breakdown at work.
IMO- its ironic, there's talk about Maura being involved in a hit and run and in her last e-mail to her friends she talks about the hit and runs/ accidents.
Fred said he withdrew the 4,000 from 8 different ATM's in a day or two. Perhaps Fred really withdrew it over an 8 day period. Go back 8 days from Saturday and it would of been Jan.30, 04 on Friday. The day after Maura sent the e-mail to her friends.

  7. Thank god we can put this to rest, it was an unlikely scenario to begin with but at least now we can focus on other things (unless another nutty theory comes out, maybe alien abduction next?).

I still feel as if she was murdered. Friend, foe or stranger. Take your pick. One way or the other I don't think she is with us any more.

  8. I have never believed Maura was responsible for Vasi's hit and run. Her manager at the dorm has already gone on record saying it would have been close to impossible.

    1. The managers were constantly rotating and checking up on the dorm security desk workers. She would have gotten caught leaving her post.

    2. The second she left that dorm, her key card would have been deactivated and she would have been locked out waiting for someone else to let her in.

    3. It would have been a 5 minute walk just to get to her car in the student parking lot and 5 minute walk back. This was NOT the type of scenario where she could have quickly escaped undetected.

    4. It was snowing really hard outside, so bad that classes would end up being cancelled the following day. This is another distraction that would have slowed her down.

If Maura wanted to sneak into the next room, maybe get some candy from a vending machine and get back to her desk without her manager catching her, that could be easily done. But sprinting across campus to get your car then driving a mile away through a snowstorm, striking someone, driving back to UMass in a panic, parking your car, running across campus back to your work building, standing around outside at the conveniently precise moment that another resident of the dorm would have ALSO been arriving home to let her in, at around 12:30 a.m. and get back to her desk...and STILL not get caught by any of the managers? There's just no way she could have pulled this off. Maura did not have the power to teleport.

No glass being missing from her car in the police report is confirmation in my eyes.

  9. If she did hit Vasi why would she be replacing tail light bulbs? Unless she was backing up when she hit him.

  10. The paint chips were yellow. Could they not have come from scraping against the yellow painted line on the side of the road?

  11. `Okay Ok K. ~Take a deep breath & close y'all eyes. Who can give me a legit, plausible, non-cartoon Spongebob, answer whyyyyyy Amherst PD & JGunderson fought the release of this NON info to JR tooth & nail. When its much 'ado about nothing - there's something. And Vasi never been pursued/intervied by LE? And Vasi said he doesnt want to know the details(putting it behind him) But Amherst PD said its still an ongoing investigation? there's a answer to everything - what is it?

    1. absolutely PVasi is a victim. but how do know he's telling the truth? No doubt the night of the H&R is fuzzy but..... what if there was something else, something undisclosed, a relationship etc that precipitated that H&R nite. Ive always wondered about The-new-beau-theory thats been tossed around. If someone was keeping tabs on M & maybe knew there was a new beau? PV says he didnt know M ~ JR's "interview" w/Sara indicated she's still scared out of her wits about something. Maybe PV decided amnesia wasnt a bad idea...?

    2. after reading the report it is obvious that the hit and run was a pure accident. an extremely drunk guy is walking down the middle of a street and gets hit by a car (which probably was not driving that fast) after a small curve in the road.no one could have predicted he was walking on that street because he was walking in the wrong direction (away from his residence) on a street that was not on his route home or to anywhere he'd be going. Even if he hadn't been hit, he'd remember nothing of the night after a certain point. He'd have probably woke up in a snow bank and not known how he got there.

  12. Sunset at 5.07 that night. If she left to go to the nearby liquor store about 4:30 it would be close to dusk when she hit the highway

  13. Is not the old message board message about the Petrit Vasi hit being implicated in Maura's strange fate also the origin of the theory that she went to live in Canada? Is there any evidence, other than that so called "ring of truth" email and the response to it that she is in Canada?

    James...

It gets dark in Amherst at 5:10PM +-min. She leaves after 4PM so she would have had 1-hour MAX of daylight. She's also driving a Black Saturn with minimal damage from the pictures. A Saturn with a dent in the hood and a cracked windshield would not have raised ANY eyebrows. It's a Saturn after all.

  15. Well this certainly appears to rule out her involvement, so hopefully we can dismiss this. That's a good thing though, it keeps the case on track.

  16. If Maura's car was damaged in the Vasi incident, she would have been crazy to take it on a long trip.

also what would she or the car have been doing on Triangle Street? The Domino's is to the southwest on Northampton Street and can be accessed best from a highway running right to the campus that skirts the west of the town.. The car was traveling towards the campus not away from it so if it were Maura's car it was coming back from doing something in the southeast part of town (Amherst College?). This means the car would have had to have been gone a while before the accident even if the driver rushed back to campus.
Also it is interesting that the witness who saw Vasi stumbling down the street one way then minutes later came right back down the same street in the other direction. What was he doing? Hopefully the cops asked that question. Also he may have passed the hit and run car in his southerly travels going in the other direction.

    1. He was busy being blackout drunk. I guarantee you he wouldn't be able to answer "what he was doing" other than that.

    2. since the witness was interviewed by the police at the accident scene, he obviously was not blackout drunk and obviously could remember what he was doing. It seems unusual he went down the street one way and then back up the other way only a few minutes later, bracketing the actual accident.

    1. My question is... What color was Kate's car...and was she borrowing Maura's car to meet Fred and Maura at ABCs on Friday night as opposed to "being picked up" by them because her car was damaged and hiding in a lot somewhere...

    3. Interesting thought ... are you going in the direction of the staged accident perhaps being the one on Saturday night?

    4. you know, I really don't have any strong thoughts either way regarding Vasi, it is possible Maura or someone she knows, knew something more about it, How long after she went missing did the geocities post happen? why would some random troll link those particular incidents? I would wonder if perhaps the person that hit him actually made the post. I would think that more than I would think Maura hit him just based on time line.

  18. Hi James, just wanted to correct you on the light bulbs.

There were at least three light bulbs. One was a light bulb for headlights and unnumbered light bulbs for directional lights.

  19. I don't really want to be the guy who says this, as my gut reaction is that Maura didn't hit Petrit Vasi. But, as Melios says above, it's not inconceivable that she was driving someone else's car. There is also mention of a 21-year-old female on page 9 of the records.

  20. the 21- yo old was Johanna, one of the friends out with Vasi that night who lived off campus in Amherst (the street is given in the report)
