More thoughts on Kate Markopoulos and Sara Alfieri

In light of the new info regarding phone calls the day of Maura's disappearance, I revisited my early interviews with Kate Markopoulos.

Kate told me that she first learned that Maura was missing when Fred called her. "I thought he was joking at first," she said. The earliest this could have happened is around 6 p.m. the day after Maura vanished, according to Fred's phone records.

But as Billy's phone records show, Bill knew Maura was not in her dorm room - and was unreachable - about 36 hours before this. In fact, he called Kate to find out where she was. Billy didn't get through to Kate until about 6:30 on Tuesday -- around the same time Kate must have spoken to Fred.

In our first interview, Kate said: "I don't think Maura fell off the face of the Earth. Maybe she was trying to do that but then something else happened."

Still, it's hard to buy that Kate didn't notice Maura was gone until late Tuesday. And she blatantly lies about other things in this interview: she claims Hoss and Maura were not close, as far as she knew, she claims everything was kosher with Bill and Maura's relationship, etc. So I just can't tell what is earnest and what is clever.

Kate also talked about how the cops were mad at her for not remembering anyone at the party (which she said was in Sara's dorm, while other people have said it was off-campus). The cops were really mad with her about that. Which tells me something else... it tells me Sara was likely not talking either. The police had no idea who was at that party other than Sara and Kate.

  1. James, when you say her roommate "afraid to say anything," what exactly do you mean? Is it their behavior or what they state outright? Do you think it's possible they just don't know anything?

    1. He is trying to get a raise and a response. The answer he got was "Not Interested", which is vastly different from "afraid". It would appear James here confused a polite decline, courtesy and well manners as weakness. Something that will not be repeated next time.

  2. 1. Why would you mention HER family when they aren't related? Isn't that shooting yourself in the foot? No way is someone going to talk to a random dude who brings up a parent.

    2. Ok this recap kind of just makes me think Maura went for a mental breather and shit went down with shady NH folk. Her saying "I don't think Maura fell off the face of the Earth. Maybe she was trying to do that but then something else happened" IS interesting.

I personally don't think a college party is related. I know it's been said A girl reported to being Maura kept looking behind her worried and there was that family who took a woman in who said she was running from some men.

The party was probably just ordinary college shit that one doesn't want cops to know about. IIronically in 2004, I had a roommate who smoked weed every night in her room. Cops were combing the neighborhood in pursuit of someone and knocked on our door. Roommate freaked out. Pretty sure the officers knew what was happening since they said through the door reassuringly that they didn't care what was going on inside.

Just knowing all about different things college students do, there are many reasons why people would dodge cops.

    2. Sometimes when young ladies need money they may resort to all kinds of things. Not saying this was the case here but didn't the former coach say there were many "trysts" with other members of the team besides him? Was there a business venture going on at that college and some were aware of it?

  3. Personally, I think the fact that it's been 10 years since they've been out of college, they're just fed up and don't want to soil a good, normally flawed person's character. To me that means people have not a clue where she is currently.

In other words, she lied to everyone else but the cops, and well, maybe what she has lied about is inconsequential to the case? Also maybe the cops know this?

    4. After what you said James about Kate not being cooperative with LE, I would like to point out one more thing about Kate not talking to the police. This was also pointed out in another post concerning Fred. Some people just don’t talk to the police. It’s a cultural thing among certain groups. Or maybe your experiences with LE haven’t been positive. This is hard for some people to understand. Also, many attorneys tell their clients not to talk to the cops under any circumstances. Not saying this is the case here, just being the devil’s advocate.

  7. James, I am highly interested in your reasoning, but I did not understand part of it.

You say, "Kate told me that she first learned that Maura was missing when Fred called her ... [no earlier than] 6 p.m. the day after Maura vanished.: So far, so good. But then you go on to say: "BUT (my capitalization) as Billy's phone records show, Bill knew Maura was not in her dorm room - and was unreachable - about 36 hours before this. In fact, he called Kate to find out where she was. Billy didn't get through to Kate until about 6:30 on Tuesday -- around the same time Kate must have spoken to Fred."

I don't follow. So Billy was calling Kate from 6:30 am on Monday through 6:30 pm on Tuesday. She did not want to talk with him, apparently, and may not have listened to his messages. Maybe he'd called before when there were lovers spats and she wanted to stay out of it.

The fact that he reached her around the earliest time that Fred talked to her does not really indicate anything to me ... unless I am overlooking something.

Even if Billy "knew that Maura was unreachable," the fact that Kate did not or did not want to talk with him does not necessarily imply - at all - that she knew where Maura was.

I am sure I am not getting it but could you explain why the second and third paragraphs point to something relevant?

  10. Kate and Sara say the party was at Sara's dormroom but Billy said Maura told him it was off campus.
    * Kate doesn't remember anyone from the Sat. Night party but remembers a male walking her and Maura out that night.
    * Kate said she found out about Maura's disappearance on Sat. Feb. 14, by the track coach but
Tells James she found out from Fred. Which is it and Why lie??
    * Didn't some of Maura's teammates from track, encourage Hoss and Maura to date? Kate wasn't one of the teammates to encourage the relationship.
    * IMO- Kate knew about Maura and Billy's troubled relationship. Why did Maura's friends and family, portray Billy and Maura's relationship as perfect, when it clearly was a mess? Kathleen said in an interview early on, that "Maura came to the White Mountains to sort her relationship out with Billy." And "She doesn't believe Maura was happy with Billy."
    * Kate said she found out about Maura being missing on Sat. Feb.14 by the track coach.
She tells James she found out by Fred. Why lie about this? This isn't something most people would lie about.
    * one would think- if your best friends boyfriend is repeatedly calling you, you would wonder why and call them back.
    * Sara doesn't recall who was at the Party either, even though it was in her dormroom.
    * Sara transferred to another University, shortly after Maura disappeared. Did she make this decision before or after Maura disappeared.
*Is Sara living in another country or just visiting another country. What country is she in?
Did Sara and Kate help search for Maura?
Why didn't they appear on the Disappeared show? They were Maura's best friends at the time.
Supposedly Sara told Fred the Real Story and was told to Never repeat it. What story did Sara tell, and does Fred still believe it 12 Years later? Who's to say the story she told, is the truth.
Kate's statement " I don't think Maura fell off the face of the earth" maybe she was trying to do that but then something else happened. Sounds like Kate knows Maura wanted to disappear.
Its possible the Saturn accident was just an accident and once that happened, Maura decided she couldn't come back. Maura knew if she got in any trouble, the credit card charge wouldn't be dismissed.
Could Maura of accidently died and her friends are covering it up?
When the Truth is told, it'll always be the same. When a lie is told, it'll change overtime.
Wonder what towers Maura, Kate, and Sara's phones were pinging from On Sat (Feb. 7- Feb. 10).

    2. You'd think if her college friends had an inkling something bad happened on her "trying to fall off the face of the earth," they'd WANT to help the cops find out what happened. Unless it implicates them, or they're helping her in some way.

      WEIRD. AS. FUCK.

    3. Yes but unless she was under HUGE duress with other things, she's smart enough to know a legal charge like that isn't the end of the world. Now, disappointing her father might drive her to be irrational.

Honestly, because one of her friends allegedly told Fred the story and he asked for it not to be repeated, I kind of doubt this is related to Fred. Sounds like shady shit.

  12. Yikes. I'm not an investigative journalist so this may be me talking nonsense but I'm not sure what point there was to you bringing up Kate's father's past troubles with the law. Doesn't that just assure she won't talk to you before you've really had a chance to get started? This is a girl who has told multiple stories that don't add up. You have to stay on some stable footing with her long enough to get some kind of answers from her...or at least give her enough rope to hang herself, metaphorically speaking.

Also, I need a clarification. What is the TRUE accurate story of how Kate found out about Maura's disappearance? Here, you say she told you she found out over the phone from Fred. But I've also read that she found out from members of the UMass track team the following weekend once she resurfaced from her own mysterious disappearance that she had no explanation for. Which one is it?

Regardless, the fact remains that we still have that 7 minute phone conversation between Billy and Kate less than 24 hours after Maura's crash in New Hampshire. So I feel Kate is a liar regardless of "who" she claims to have found out this information from.

  14. I think James was trying to get a reaction from her asking about her dad. If he is a violent man its easy to assume his daughter my have the same temper.
Secondly we can get some insight into her personality. ... for example if she answered with " my dad shouldve bombed the bastard" we immediately see a red flag in our suspicion about her harming maura with intent or accidentally.
If she said " please don't bring that up, my dad wasnt himself back then" it would sway us to pity her.... but she clamped up and that is pretty consistent with what we know about her. Good at keeping quiet. So hit a brick wall there but worth a try.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Maybe Kate knew that Maura wanted to go away for a few days and knew where she planned to go. So when Billy called and had that 7 minute conversation it's possible Kate was thinking "they think she's missing but I know she's just hiding out." Then later on when the track team was informed she was missing Kate realized that now there really WAS a problem bc she knew Maura was supposed to be back already.

This could explain the inconsistency in when she found out Maura was missing. Bc in her eyes she wasn't missing technically until days after Kate expected her to be back.

The 7 minute phone call where Billy probably told her Maura was gone probably didn't alarm her if she knew where Maura was and why.

So basically, we think she found out in that phone call. But to her maybe she didn't think Maura was really missing until that day the track team found out.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That 7 minute phone call SHOULD have alarmed her because Maura's car was found stuck in the snow in the middle of nowhere and she had abandoned it, disappearing on foot. That should have been a huge red flag even if Kate knew where Maura was planning to go before she left.

Also, what logical reason would she have to mention different discoveries of finding out Maura was missing? Billy calls her 20 hours after the crash, he tells her Maura is missing and Kate plays dumb. There would be no reason for her to change her story even if she knows more than she claims.

  18. Do we know if either of these two were polygraphed? From what i have read the cops were frustrated with their lack of co-operation, especially regarding that so called party they attended together. It would seem a polygraph could provide some of the unanswered questions.

I have read in various places that polygraphs were used, just wondered if we know who undertook them and if Kate and Sara had taken one?

  19. Why Maura left is irrelevant IMO. She could have gotten everything she needed to start a new life and still crashed in Haverhill and been picked up by a local. Where she crashed on the road makes no sense if she were staging an accident as she would've picked somewhere with no houses around.

The accident was real. Even if Kate said "I hooked up with Billy and Maura went to NH to clear her head" or "Maura needed to run away and I got her a new ID and SS#" it still wouldn't matter because Maura got in an accident.

The only way the "why" matters is if they were driving tandem and Maura crashed. That means Rick Forcier was potentially not lying when he said he saw her later that night. Maybe Maura was running to find her tandem driver. But if that were the case then the driver and Maura must have reconnected and Maura got in their car and lived happily ever after in Canada. I say they must have reconnected because if they hadn't the driver would've come forward because Maura would've disappeared on her way to disappearing.

I find the "tandem driver, but real crash and later reconnected and started a new identity in Canada" theory ludacris, but it's a possibility nonetheless.

A large red flag IMO is Rick Forcier saying he saw her later that night. Either it's true and Maura fled the scene of the accident and booked it down the road which could still have the suicide possibility, the local scumbag possibility, or the possibility she reconnected with her tandem driver. However, if Rick Forcier is lying about seeing her, ask yourself, why would someone lie about seeing a missing women alive miles away from their house after she crashed right in front of their house?

Who was the last known person to see Maura alive? RF claimed it's him. Or he's lying.

  20. NOBODY can state 100% proof positive it was Maura Murray at the WBC scene that night. NOBODY..!

And as far as Rick Forcier goes................He is a story teller and a good one at that.

Even told his ex wife that MM came to his door that night and 'WANTED HIM'....also told the neighbors MM was a great cook and a few more.

Forcier's story has always bugged Me, especially the part where he SAW NOTHING when arriving home at 8 pm. He would have seen all the commotion from the Police, FD and EMS with all those lights flashing. I DON'T THINK SO.

  22. On Wednesday Feb.4,04- maura calls Dominos twice
    1. 12:00 am for 5 mins
    2. 12:10 am for 3 mins
    Thursday- Feb. 5 calls
    10:10- Kathleen for 28 mins
    12:07- billy for 7 mins
    3:40 am- Dominos
28 mins is a long time when your not suppose to be using your cellphone @ work.. IMO- this shows Maura's job was pretty relaxed.
Kathleen said "Maura probably faked the Breakdown, so she could get out of work." But why would she need/ want to do that when her shift was almost over?
So Maura has a breakdown at work, then calls Dominos at 3:40 am, and then doesn't use her phone again until Friday night around 6:13 pm.
On Wed and Thurs Maura's last calls were to Dominos and then she doesn't use her cellphone for almost 24 hrs both nights.
Did Maura know someone at Dominos
Perhaps, Maura was with somebody and didn't want to be bothered, so she shut her phone off. My sister n law who was in a relationship would do this.(they were having troubles) While she was with another guy, shed shut her phone off, until they were done spending time together.
On Sat night Maura calls Kate at 9:01 pm and doesn't use her phone again until Sunday night at 8:26pm to check her VM. Supposedly, Maura left her phone at Sara's dormroom Sat. Night. She used Fred's phone to call Billy at 4:49 am Sunday morning.
Who called AAA and the police in the Toyota accident?
Maura called Fred Sunday night at 11:26 pm. Wasn't this her last call, where she psychically spoke with a family member or friend?
Between Wed Feb 4 and Mon Feb.5, maura called Billy 3 times from her cellphone and once to the Ft. Sill Field Artillery Bridgade. Maura and Billy hadn't spoke very much on there cellphones,So why all of a sudden, was Billy repeatedly calling Maura on Monday before she disappeared and on Tuesday. Why was he calling Kate?
Perhaps, Maura sent the e-mail to Billy so he would quit calling and woudnt call anyone looking for her, making them concerned.
What a coincendance that on Monday Feb. 9, the one time Maura calls Billy at 2:18 pm, his phone goes to VM, because he is calling Kate at the exact moment. Did Maura know Billy was calling Kate at that exact moment because she was with Kate?
IMO- Billy's phone records are interesting

Yes, Maura might of called Billy another time, that we don't know of but the records we do have, show that Maura tried to call Billy 1 time on Monday and at that Exact moment, Billy was calling Kate, sending Maura's call to VM. Maura sent an e-mail to Billy saying she got his messages but didn't feel like talking, so why did she call him, knowing he might answer. IMO- Maura called Billy at that exact time because she knew he was calling Kate and her call wouldn't be answered.
