Update on the Montreal Sighting

Some good news and bad news on the possible sighting of Maura Murray in Montreal.

According to an employee at Chez Suzette, a Montreal Police Detective came to the restaurant to view the video tape. Unfortunately, the tape had been erased by that time by their video system.

However, the detective was able to view several pictures taken of the video from an iPhone (see above, and click to embiggen). And the man who was with this woman paid with a Visa card, so they have that info, too.

  1. Seems like another crock of porridge.

    1. ↑ The definitive post on this topic; everything else written here is entirely superfluous.

  2. I don't know. I want to believe this could be a possibility, but I haven't seen a definitive enough picture of the woman to think she's anything more than someone who has the same hair color and length (at the time Maura disappeared), and *potential* facial profile, as Maura Murray. It seems like >1/3 of all women on the planet would fit into that basic criteria. I can name about 20 women I know right now that have shoulder-length dark hair, light skin, and a slender build similar to what we all expect Maura to have in 2016.

Not to say this isn't worth looking into; it's just so vital to try and get a clearer image of the person's face than what we've seen, because the truth is Maura's "soft features" are extremely common in many women throughout virtually every city in the world.

    1. Yes, my hopes are not up. And I concur about lookalikes with general types. Ironically, one of my oldest friends could pass for Maura.

    2. I think it is her. You don't empty out your checking account, look for hotels in Burlington, VT (less than an hour away from Canadian border) and by celebratory booze unless you wanted to disappear. Urthering this is that her relationship with her fiancé was on the rocks and she was in trouble with the law due to credit card fraud). I think she had prearranged or someone to pick her up at or near the crash site.

  3. Why are these pictures taken from an odd angle? Seems deceptive.

    1. It's a photo of a 2D (flat) image so the angle it's taken from wouldn't matter all that much.

  4. offhand I gotta say doesnt look like her

  5. I have to imagine there's not much a detective can do with these photos. If the person in the photos bears a striking real-life resemblance to Maura, it's lost in the transition from video to photo of a video, in my opinion.

  6. Impossible to tell from here.

  7. Did the police say if they thought the woman in the video/picture could be Maura? Or was the picture quality, not good enough to give an opinion.
At least, they have a credit card to track. That's better than nothing.
What is it with getting video?
At least the police are taking this seriously and trying to find out if this woman is Maura or not.

  8. I really doubt that's her. The hairline is different. Also, this woman looks fairly younger than Maura would be.

    1. She could be the same age range. But people are correct. Brunettes who don't have distinguishing features in pics like this look the same.

  9. This woman looks shorter than MM. Maura is/was 5'7" if the woman in the photo is MM, thentrance the guy she is with is about 7 feet tall

    1. I'm doubtful its Maura, but who knows. I think the camera may distort relative heights and proportions, depending on the angle. There was a man killed in his hotel room by a female. They had surveillance footage of her climbing the stairs to his room. She looked short and stocky in the video. She was actually pretty tall (5'9"ish?)and slim/athletic. I was quite surprised at the difference when they published her photo.

  10. From the pictures, which aren't that clear, it looks nothing like her. Trying to add 12 years to Maura in my head and it still doesn't compute. Seems like somebody wanted attention and inserted themselves in to the case.

    1. I actually think it does softly resemble her. But from that angle, and with her looking downward, it's impossible.

Let's see if anything comes from her date's info.

    2. It's the pointy nose in the first picture that makes me doubtful. However, it's not obvious if the nose is pointy or it just seems that way from the awkward camera angle.

    3. Andy: True. Old profile photo confirms, but that was several years prior.

More recent though not a profile: https://aureliaisblogging.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/screenshot-2015-12-03-at-7-03-19-pm.png

  11. I've been following this case for months and as much as I wish this woman were Maura, I really don't think it is. From what I can see of the face, it seems a lot more angular and somewhat foreign than the available pictures we have of Maura.

I wish Kate, Sara, Fred, anyone who knows something would speak on it finally. It's been 12 years. Maura's soul deserves that closure. As much as I wish that she were alive, my gut tells me otherwise.

  12. wow. The credit card is GOOD. That should give us an absolute answer.

  13. One thing. The podcast guys have suspicious activity happen to them. There is an effort to TRY to get people to think she is deceased, even saying her case IS solvable albeit difficult.

    Who would do that?

    Sure, trolls exist everywhere.

But for people to experience shady shit in NH, to witness people in NH behaving oddly, well that could be its own story.

Also, the more I stare at this picture above, the more I see someone other than a 34 (?) yr old Maura.

  14. Here is what I do not understand. Let's just think for a moment that this is Maura Murray. So now what? She is an adult and was an adult at the time of her disappearance. She is free to do what she chooses. And this is all if she actually ran away. What if she was kidnapped and murdered?

Then you have to consider the Franzia wine box and the other alcohol in the car. How can you believe she crossed the border into Canada that night, but was drunk when she did it?! Oh, but maybe she decided to rent a hotel room and sober up for the night? Why?
Getting drunk is that important as to stop her plan to runaway mid-stream as well as also make her more visible to possible witnesses at a hotel or other places in the area?

Or maybe the explanation will be she was drunk, crashed her car, then walked to the nearest hotel to check in for the night. Then her helper came and drove her into Canada the next day. I only think that because if someone was her helper that night I do not think they would be too happy with a long delay because of drunkedness. There are classes to attend at UMASS after all aren't there? They did not plan on crashing did they? Did the friends mentioned so prominently on this blog attend their Wednesday classes? As an amateur investigator I am sure that is one question that someone had to have asked by now.

Going to a hotel is a possibility, but then there would be receipts and sightings at the hotel. Not to mention, when was the BOL put out for Maura Murray? You can see the problems. If she has a helper it makes no sense to stay in the U.S. that night. If she does not have a helper, she cannot go into Canada that night, at least not based on the evidence she left in her car. She was drunk. There are police at the border.

If it is Maura Murray, it does not make a lot of sense to me. If she is alive she did a great job of confounding people. She has not been seen for 12 years so most likely she is probably dead because of either an accident, foul play, or suicide(although I highly doubt suicide). But then again, I have not seen a drunk person call AAA. So I really do not know what to think.

  15. It's not her. Maura wears a fake mustache when she's out in public.

    1. Lol.. Being funny.. How do you know she does this?

  16. Unless Maura had a nose job (maybe with that missing $4000?!), it's not her. The woman in the picture has a prominent nose. Maura's is more a button nose.

    1. I thought Fred deposited the money back into his account? Does anyone know for sure?

    2. Do we know for sure that Maura was the one driving the car, texting, making calls from her phone and not speaking? The typewritten note to Billy left on the boxes. If it wasn't a long letter, why type it? Why weren't her friends and family deposed to find out the real truth of the days that led to her disappearance...under oath?

    3. It's impossible to confirm with these images. Point taken, however. But remember too many of the images online were taken several years prior to her disappearance. The most common profile shot was possibly a HS sophomore photo ... in a more recent shot, it's possible her nose changed somewhat. Not exactly a profile shot though.

  17. Funny, she kind of looks like Kathleen.

  18. BTW, Fred seems like the type, if he had any inkling she ran away, to go to the most likely destination and comb it. Irrational, yes, but his latest video interview showed desperation.

  19. Doesn't look like her except for the skin color and the brown hair. Otherwise the photos are way too blurry to jump to any kind of conclusions.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Why would you post that they have her credit card information until after they follow it up. SMH.

  21. Maura has prominent cheekbones and a small nose. It doesn't seem like her, but the pictures aren't clear.

  22. Hey, at least there's a credit card for the Police to follow up on. We may get a real answer with this sighting. Kudos to the person who was brave enough to report this possible sighting, opening herself up for criticism or embarrassment from strangers or LE. The truth is, we don't know the truth about Maura's dissapearance and a concerned citizen did the right thing. I just read an article on listverse about people who staged their own dissapearances all for over 20 years. It's always better to know the truth, even if its dissapionting than always wonder if you should have made that call.

    Now they don't... Hmmm

  26. The second 2 pictures look EXACTLY like ME... and every other white skinned, thin brunette... Maura didn't have very unique features. No way they're going to be able to tell if it's her or not 12 years later...

Seriously did a double take when I thought I saw myself though... And NO, I am not Maura!

  27. Hey James… you ever consider limiting your comments to people who ARE NOT Anonymous? It would really cut out a lot of bullshit. A lot of people wouldn't say such stupid and offhand things. If they still do with a name…?More power to 'em! I guess I just wonder why you put yourself through the hassle of approving all the anonsense…..

  28. Those pictures are much clearer than the grainy image from the FA's phone. When zoom in on the face on these photos, this woman looks nothing like her...at all. :-(

    ReplyDelete
  29. To me it looks a lot like her! However, it seems like it would be difficult to make a positive ID from these photos. Maybe if the FBI or another expert analyzed the photos it would shed some light.

  30. One thing that kind of immediately makes me doubt this is the height. Maura is/was 5'7", pretty tall for a woman; the woman in this photo looks pretty short, and is clearly much shorter than the man she is with.

Look how she has to crane her neck upward to talk to him in pic 1, she seems to be at least a foot shorter, maybe more. It's not impossible the guy is like 6'7", but very few people are that tall and he doesn't really seem like he's super-tall compared to other reference points in the screenshot.
