Is This An April Fools Joke or A New Lead?

Late last night a YouTube commenter known as "1978mackdaddy" posted the following message under the beginning of the Disappeared episode devoted to Maura's disappearance:

"If you want to find this girl it's pretty easy. She now lives in Sherbrooke Quebec with a guy named Maurice. She's been living there for years."

I strongly suspect this is an old troll coming back to muddy the waters. But it would be interesting if this person could offer a bit more.

  4. What happened to the sighting in Canada on the 12 year anniversary of Maura's disappearance? Was the guy with the woman at the restaurant named Maurice?

  5. Would definitely be worth checking out before she gets tipped off. I'm sure she (if in fact still alive) follows this or other blogs.

    1. I agree, it needs to be checked out. Maybe that's the problem with this case.. Information is easily dismissed, comments are automatically assumed to be trolls,
Yes, I think this could be a troll but you Never know. It could be the lead that leads to answers.
IMO- It wouldn't be that hard to stay hidden for 12 years, especially in Canada, when
      1. No ones looked for you there, except when James went there several years ago.
      2. The focus of the search for the missing person has been contained to one particular area. (Local dirtbag in Haverhill, NH took Maura)

      Delete
    2. There has been so much talk of her being in Sherbrooke that if she did ever live there (which I doubt) she isn't likely to be living there anymore.

      100% troll.

  6. If somebody has the time, it might be a smart idea to google the restaurants in Sherbrooke and see if there are any "restaurant staff" photos. We all assumed that Maura was probably in the restaurant/bar business.

  7. If mm is in Sherbrooke established id imagine fleeing on the drop of a dime (for a 2nd time in her life) could be hard if a house is owned etc. So get a PI there renner or murray fam and she'll be found in a few days right? Haha only if that easy.. damn trolls!

  8. No April fools joke here but ID Discovery is airing a new season of Disappeared beginning Apr 11. Figured gotta give that show a plug cuz it's gotten so many into the case. Also I never knew that MM's story was season 1 ep 6, to be in season 1 it must of stood out in there minds. It's called "Miles to Nowhere" aired Feb 8, 2010

    1. i first heard of Maura binging Disappeared last year with my friend. We watched maybe 9 of them in Season 1 and the ONLy case that stuck with me was Maura's. At that time I instinctually thought she might be bipolar.

Would explain lack of real thought, stealing, emotions, and sex drive (though the last isn't exactly a rare trait amongst humans)

    2. And the rest aren'the traits of bi-polar affective disorder.

    1. Maybe Maura had a sex change, and now she is a guy named Maurice. That would have been a good reason for her disappearance. Wacko idea? Sure. But there are a lot of those out there. Always room for one more.

  12. Look the chick had a lot of male "friends" back in her day. In fact I don't think that we know all of who they are really. That's what gives this this type of posting a creepy sense of plausibility. Now I'm not saying it's legit, just that it's plausible. Plus she was known to get around, it fits folks.

    2. It was never mentioned anywhere that Maura had any male friends so which friends are you talking about?

  13. Looking for Maurices in Sherbrooke is about like looking for Thomases in Boston. (For that matter, "Guy" is a common French Canadian Christian name and surname, so "guy named Maurice" could have been a pun.)

Seriously, can anyone believe that someone who wishes not to be found is going to announce her identity to anyone, except perhaps those to whom she is closest? Conceivably, such a trusted person might eventually have reason to betray that confidence, but there are a lot of more effective ways of doing that. Anyone can claim anything on the Net. In this kind of case, eventually someone will claim just about anything. There has to be some kind of threshold standard for credibility in looking at such claims. I don't have the kind of competence to say exactly what that standard should be, but I'm competent that a vague, anonymous claim doesn't remotely meet it.

    1. "Seriously, can anyone believe that someone who wishes not to be found is going to announce her identity to anyone"

One reason I have HUGE doubts to that comment left on geocities. Especially since I am not in the camp that believes M had anything to do with Petri. I think her emotional turmoil was related to familial romantic relationship strife and her own. She might have felt no matter what she tried to do, or where she'd go on radar, certain people would've always been up her ass.

At this point, until someone with finds her skull, or finds her, we will know nothing.

    1. Mr. Truthseeker, WHY are you so convinced that Maura didn't run away? It's completely possible: relationship problems, dorm room packed, condos researched, money withdrawn, booze purchased, possibly sighted with friends...
I understand you know the area and the creeps that live in it, and yes, it's possible that she was killed. But the girl was having all kinds of problems and clearly was going SOMEWHERE to get away (secretly?). Why do you never consider this as an option? Just curious.

    2. easy, easy on truth seeker! He has class and is def no idiot!

      Delete
    3. Classy or not, he isn't wrong. Leaving aside the implausibility that a young woman like Ms. Murray would be able to assume another identity sufficient to allow her to live and work without detection for well over a decade in a heavily populated area of a first-world nation post-9/11, it is illogical to believe that a person who has discovered Ms. Murray's current location would chose to disclose this information so flippantly and offhandedly in the public comments section of a YouTube channel rather than contacting police or family members. There is no incentive to behave in such a way.

People in possession of knowledge requisite to find a high-profile missing person will either seek to obtain a monetary award or responsibly disclose the information to authorities, even if they don't have good intentions as regards the missing person. That's just how humans in possession of valuable information behave.

  21. Sherbrooke has a population of 154,600, which is the same as my hometown.

I used to run into 36 people I know on the daily.
I'm slightly on the fence still regarding whether or not she's there. But the fact that her friend said "maybe she was trying to run away and something happened" piques my interest. Is the something the accident on 112? None of her friends acted as if she died.

If people got desperate, like 3 searchers could go to Sherbrooke and claim an area of town and pass out photos of her. Even one person could do that and cover most of the town. Why hasn't anyone considered that?

Fred has only searched in the Haverhill, NH area.

There has been several sightings of Maura in Canada over the past 12 years.

  25. Hi James,
I agree with the majority of the comments that this is simply a joke.
I really enjoy reading your blog. Keep up the good work!
I'm very interested in other missing persons cases and I think that some of these other cold cases could really benefit from your expertise. Some of the more frustrating cases that I have been following for years include the cases of Jason Jolkowski, Lauren Spierer, Ray Gricar, and Sneha Anne Phillip. The last two have been declared dead but there doesn't seem to be any strong evidence pointing in that direction. Jason has been missing almost 15 years and it seems like there has never been a single credible lead. It would be great if someone with an investigative journalism background took a fresh look at these cases.

    1. I have followed the Ray Gricar case over the years too. Very strange. Prominent DA from county of a prominent university (Penn State).
And not in the "disappearance" category but I was intrigued by the cases of 2 US Attorneys' mysterious deaths. One in Baltimore (Jonathan Luna) & one in the northwest (Thomas Crane Wales).
And the case of Susan Reinert (dead - body found) and her 2 children (missing presumed dead) from Phila, PA area in the early 1980s. Schoolteacher, strange goings on w/other teacher & eccentric principal.
All of the above are popular for online sleuth material & one day may benefit from repeated searches & followers.

    2. There are not too many investigative journalists anymore. Maybe they are too scared to pry into the dark matters of others or the stations they work for forbid it. I don know they get death threats at times.

  27. On the live Spreecast, Clint made some really good points.
A lot of the information was Family introduced.
    * Suicide theory- When Fred learned that the Saturn was abandoned in NH, he called the lead investigator, which he left a message for him to call him back ASAP. A little later Fred called back, and told the detective that his daughter went there to do personal harm to herself.
    * Fred's pleas were directed straight to Maura not a Local Dirtbag.
    * Billy and Sharon Raush went on the Disappeared episode, talking about the phone call, the day after Maura disappeared, knowing that the police had traced the call back to a Red Cross worker.
    * Family said Maura hadn't unpacked her things yet, that's why they were boxed up, on top of her bed, and the Art was off the wall. They had been back from Christmas break for about 12 days. If Maura hadn't unpacked yet, where was she sleeping? Also, where was the clothes, she had been wearing for the past 2 weeks. She wears her clothes and then packs them back into the boxes. I don't think so...
    * All anyone said about the note Maura left on top of her boxes, was there was no new note.
When was Maura's dormroom searched? If Billy was there, it had to be Thursday or Friday. When Maura's family found out on Wed., why didn't anyone go by her dormroom?
    * family orchestrated the search of the A frame house. They had hired private investigators.
    * the brother gave the knife that supposedly harmed Maura to Fred. Fred mailed the knife to the police. Why would the brother give the knife to Fred??
On the spreecast, John said the note was Maura telling Billy goodbye. Why would Maura be telling Billy goodbye? Where was she going, when she left UMASS?

  34. I've seen all sorts of intriguing points made in the time I've followed this blog. Ultimately though the discussion of Maura's Murray's disappearance is a process of saying more and more about less and less. I don't know what kind of information law enforcement has that has not been revealed. I don't know the nature of the tip that James Renner received a few weeks ago. Conceivably, one (or both) of those sources might point to a particular scenario as being the most likely. It's useless to speculate until such time that information is publicly available. (If that ever happens.) Even then, it's highly unlikely that anything there would resolve the question. At this point, I think we have to assume that the mystery is never going to be resolved, except by pure blind luck. (Maura Murray resurfaces; a hiker stumbles across her remains; someone makes a deathbed confession that can be verified, etc.)

  37. Long time reader, first time commenter. I believe that it would be all but impossible for Maura Murray to keep herself from being found with the amount of effort that as been put into finding her. It would have taken a lot of planning, a lot of money, and the mind of a person accustomed to living outside of society for her to disappear for this long. I'm not saying that it can't be done, or that it hasn't been done, I just don't believe a young woman with her background is capable of it. Very few people vanish and are not found in short order. Richard Marsh, Northampton, MA

    ReplyDelete
  38. I wonder if it's possible that Maura could have changed her name before her disappearance. The more I've read about the case, the more I think everything was planned and the accident was staged. I've never changed my name so I don't know anything about the process, but do the police/government organizations automatically get notified of name changes? If she had changed her name just prior to her disappearance, would anyone would pick up on it? Or think twice to research it?

Also, I think that in 2004 to probably 2006-2007 Maura could've lived privately in Canada somewhere. But especially now, I don't think she could be hiding out in Canada without being discovered. This case is all over the internet and youtube.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I tend to agree. And an individual who does disappear and has the means to do so and does so successfully, doesn't usually post on the Internet or elsewhere telling where they can be found. And in any case, much as I loved reading different theories here and other places as well, I truly believe that she met her fate sometime that night or very shortly thereafter. I think she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and someone either offered her a ride that she accepted, or coerced her into their vehicle, and murdered her.

  40. If no one saw Maura, leave the Saturn, How was it Known that she was carrying a black backpack with her? Is it because one of the witnesses saw her leave the Saturn with the backpack or because her family said they didn't find her backpack? Has anyone else besides Sara, confirmed that Maura was at work on Sunday Feb.8,04?

"Authorities are, however, still looking for one item, Scarinza said. Murray's friends said when they last saw her in February, she was carrying a black backpack."

"She had a (black) backpack when she left Massachusetts," Scarinza said. "We have not been able to locate the backpack in the car or her (dorm) room. That was the pack she used at school."
