Woman From New England Leaves Family, Creates New Life

The strange case of Lori Erica Ruff was just solved by some astute online sleuths. Looks like this woman wanted to leave her family behind and start fresh, under a new name.

Then one day, she told her mom she was leaving for good. Don’t come after me, she warned.
The family never heard from her again. They tried everything they could think of, but Kimberly had ensured they would never find her by changing her name not once but twice.
It's not very well known, but there are certain agencies in New England that help women leave abusive situations and start a new life somewhere. I wonder if that's what Lori did.

Read the full article at The Seattle Times. It's a great piece of journalism and an odd end to an odd story.

  1. Wow! The Lori Ruff story was a real mystery to me, just like Maura's story. I'm glad they solved it, but so sad that she never had anybody to count on and was on the run for so long before she got married. She even married into a very controlling family. If she took off and disappeared at 18 years old, surely Maura could do the same.

RIP, Kimberley (Lori). I wish life had been better for you.

    1. The family wasn't controlling. The mother in law was a bit but nothing out of the ordinary for mothers in law.

  2. So she left for no real reason except she apparently got bored?

People are weird. Why not just tell people, "hey, im heading to _____ region for an adventure. Please don't follow. I will be happy and safe."

    No name change needed.

Unless someone is seriously being threatened or running from the law, a name change is stupid. Change your last name if anything.

Now, if you're running from the law, that is dishonest and sociopathtic and means you think of yourself as above it like the Clintons.

    1. Kimberley's mother remarried, and we have no idea of what the new husband was like, but I doubt Kimberley (Lori) ran because she was bored. She was running from something else. We don't know if she was being abused, either emotionally or physically. It has to be a desperate situation for a young woman to pack up and leave everything behind her. The need to change her name is so that nobody in the family would follow her or try to find her. You have to be pretty desperate to do that. This is like shaming a woman who has been raped because she was wearing a skirt that was too short and too tight.

    2. I read she left after her parents divorced and didn't like her mother's new husband, so I'm pretty sure it went deeper than just boredom.

But taking the identity of a deceased 2 year old and then all of her subsequent odd behavior w/ her husband and his family and then her suicide...I suspect Kimberly hadn't exactly been playing w/ a full deck for a long time. I mean, I feel for her but she also strikes me as someone who was a bit off her rocker. Smart, but mentally ill. I hope she's found peace.

  3. Wait, why would they search for her and disobey her wishes? That's fucked up.

  6. I can't help but think back to your post about the mysterious person who posted the following:

Maura Murray is NOT a Missing Person
Maura Murray has the right as every independent adult does to leave with her new boyfriend and start a new life. Maura is living a content and satisfying life in the Province of Quebec.
Maura's father Fred Murray never quite forgave her for being asked to leave West Point. It was his personal bragging point that he had two daughters at West Point. Maura's dismissal damaged Fred's ego and he never completely forgave her.
Maura's being asked to leave West Point and all the ensuing criticism by her father was the beginning of a certain line of thought for Maura, culminating in her leaving on Feb 9, 2004 to start a new life unencumbered by the constant criticism of her father. Maura's relationship with William Rausch was near its end. Ac- cording to Maura's sister Kathleen, they were having 'serious problems.' Maura had met someone new, who unlike William Rausch had no West Point connections and therefore was not a constant reminder to her of her failure at West Point.
On the night of February 5 2004 Maura took a break from her job at the security desk at a UMass dormitory to go and briefly get coffee and some food.
Sometime between 12 MN and 1 AM Maura driving her Saturn struck and critically injured the UMass student Petrit Vasi leav- ing him for dead.
Around 1 AM - 1:20 AM Feb 6 Maura had a complete emotional breakdown brought on by this hit and run accident. Maura's breakdown was witnessed by a student who reported this to Maura's supervisor, who then came and saw that Maura needed physical help to get back to her dormitory. The supervisor then physically helped Maura back to her dorm and recommended counseling.
Between 2 and 3 AM on the morning of Sunday Feb 8 Maura had a second motor vehicle accident wrecking her father's new car.
Fred Murray's new car was towed around 3 AM to his Hadley motel room. Maura arrived at Fred's motel at the same time as a passenger in the tow truck. Fred was not happy with Maura to put it mildly. What happened in this motel room we'll never know but I do know for a fact that there was some physical violence on the part of Fred Murray. Fred Murray has a history of domestic violence. The next day Maura left for good.
Maura needed to disguise the evidence of the Petrit Vasi hit and run by staging another accident for the purpose of covering up the damage to her car from the Vasi hit and run. She and her new boyfriend travelled in tandem to Route 112 in NH (He was already in Southern NH). The accident was staged, she left her Saturn, walked down the road to where her boyfriend was waiting for her in his car. She disappeared, her only wish is that she be left alone to live her life in peace. She is happy and contented and just wants to be left alone.

One thing that stands out for me is the detailed timelines AND the person says "they know for a fact" that Fred got physical and "Fred had a history of domestic violence". Sounds like a family member or very close friend OR even Maura. Towards the end it even sounds like a plea "to be left alone".

    1. The mention Petri Vasi makes me view this as not credible. If this person hadn't mentioned that I might have believed it.

    2. All this person did is sew together all the mythology around this case into one running narrative, post it online and say that it's true. This person didn't tell us anything that hasn't been all over the internet for years.

I would pay more attention if someone revealed something that wasn't common knowledge, which was subsequently verified. That would indicate having inside knowledge.

    3. I tend to think that this is some ones hypothesis rather then fact. Reading through what was written in this post leads me to a few conclusions. IF TRUE, then the information in the post could only have come from Maura and is being told thru another person. I doubt if it was really Maura Murray. Who is this post written to? Her family? Friends? Who ever is on the internet reading it? What is the purpose? If it was to get people to stop looking for Maura is did just the opposite. It looks like a woman writer to me. Who is this person? If this is a true story written by someone close enough to Maura to be told that information, then it can only be a few people. Well, I think we can rule out Fred and Billy. Neither of them would write their prospective in such way or use of language the writer did. I also think we can rule out Kathleen and her sister Julie because of the line as referring to HER sister. The only other woman in the case who Maura would confide the information in the post is Kate and/or Sara. The writer states that Mara LEFT with her new boyfriend. Then later states that they travelled in Tandem (but he was already in southern NH) Which is it? They left together and travelled in tandem or that they planed to meet up. Those are different things. I think that with James getting some of the info released in the Vasi accident that I then to rule out the whole angle the writer is selling. There is nothing tying Maura to that accident. It is just supposition to explain Maura's breakdown that night. As far as Maura staging the car accident in NH. I seriously doubt it. It someone wanted to hide the accident damage they could have safety done so without putting their life on the line. And to crash a car right in front of some houses where you would have to expect the cops to show up. What was the plan after she purposely crashed her car? If it was staged, is was obviously a blunder because she left the car. If she hit Vasi, then the only piece of evidence would be the car. The last thing you would want to do is hand it right to the cops!

    4. I have always thought she ran away, and when this was posted originally it resonated with me. Also agreed: Something was not right between Fred and Maura.

  7. Minor correction: Kimberly/Becky Sue/Lori was from suburban Philadelphia, not New England.

  8. Id still bet1the-farm that the phone call at the dorm desk from "my sister" was telling M "its GO time". whatever had been planned - it was time to be implemented. Could have been sooner than anticipated OR just the reality of it all - may have been overwhelming & she brokedown/checked out. ~Well oiled machine peeps ~ random creep OR atrociously bad luck on Rte112 just doesnt fit ~based on alllll the events from the troubles/leaving WPoint to Going-off-the-Grid prior to 2.09.04

  9. Obvious difference here being that this woman told people she was leaving... so this really wasn't a mystery at all. Only unknown was where she ran off to. Maura on the other hand seemingly told no one. Or at least no one has fessed up to knowing.

  10. Interesting case and proof that self disappearing can be done.

Just trying to brainstorm what Maura lead us to Maura now if she is alive. She liked to run and hike...what else? She worked in an art gallery--was art an interest of hers? What type of music did she like? Would she have a child by now? Would she have returned to nursing or would she be in an off-the-grid type job? (ski instructor, waitress?) Does Maura have any interests or hobbies that haven't been mentioned? Would she be married by now? Could she be using her real full name, or perhaps just her first name?

Also, what was Maura's middle name? Could she be using that as her first name??

Was the Canada Curves location ever visited so staff could be interviewed to see if she did work there? Was there ever any follow up with the music store witness who described seeing a "sportive" Maura in the store?

Anyone got a line on a good PI in Canada??

    1. Geez, my writing errors! "What might lead us to Maura now..." I meant to type.

I definitely am curious about Maura's middle name. Also, could she be living under the assumed name of her sister or one of her friends or another student at school or one of her jobs that Maura would have crossed paths with and/or stolen ID from? If I were a PI I'd consider looking for people with these names living in Canada. Then again, Maura could even be living under her real name...it's been done before.

I wonder if border control between the US and Canada has recently been alerted; for example, has the BOLO (be on the look out) been brought to their attention? Has anyone given them flyers recently? If Maura is alive in Canada perhaps she travels to the US every now and again. An age progression image, photos of her sister, or both, might help someone to recognize her.

I respect her right to live where she chooses, but she could be in someone's bunker too so I don't think it's wrong to seek answers. I assume most of you are of the same mind.

  11. I followed the Lori Erica Ruff case as well so good to see it has been solved.
A story like this shows that there is still the possibility that Maura Murray could still be alive and out there somewhere

  12. I'm fairly sure there is still more to Lori Ruff/Kimberly McLean. I can't imagine someone going through the work she must have went through - identity theft followed by multiple identity changes - just because she didn't get along with her parents. Those are the actions of someone who was scared of something.

    1. Not really. I have often thought seriously about doing the same thing and it really just came down to me wanting to get away from people I just didn't like.
