What Leads Have Not Been Exhausted?

Open question:

What leads remain in the disappearance of Maura Murray? What has not been fully investigated which might lead to more clues?

One thing I'd love to have is the name of anyone else who was present for the party at Sara Alfieri's dorm room the weekend before Maura vanished. Those people are out there somewhere and have not yet come forward (and if you were there and are reading this, please email me - I do not need to publish your name and we can use the info on background).

  1. There's so many, it almost seems like a pointless question to ask. I mean, what aspect of this case HAS been fully investigated? Even things we think there's no more to say on it, something else seems to always come out at some point that makes us re-examine it. I think though the ATM footage is a big one. May not be anything important on it, but if it could just be released and people can see it for themselves that there's nothing to get from it, then we could finally cross that off the list and no longer have to waste further time on it.

  2. I'd like to know where Maura's friends(Sara, Kate, Hoss ect.) were the day she disappeared. And there's always been that rumor that no one knew where Kate was for a day after Maura went missing(not sure if that's been answered.) And yeah, like everyone else I would like to see the ATM footage just to get closure on that.

  3. In my mind it is still not a sure bet that it was indeed Maura Murray at the scene in Havehill NH. I feel that the ATM video has evidence on it that may point to that being the case.

There can be no harm in showing the video to the public unless there is something contained therein that would jeopardize the prosecutions case if it was ever to come to an arrest.

We have to remember from what has been posted online that: Fred Murray has even only seen stills from said video. WHY.?

    2. I agree with you T. I think there is a lot to suggest that she was not at the scene. Moreover, it is assumption - albeit clearly suggested ones - that lead to the conclusion that she packed up her room before she left. It is entirely possible that whomever was at the scene packed up her room and that that happened after the Haverhill accident. I am not asserting that that DID happen, but only that it is a possibility in a scenario where clearly there is some deception going on among the principal players.

    3. In one of the podcasts it was stated by the guy helping search for Maura, that one of her sisters said that they saw the video from the liquor store. He remembers that someone told him what shoes Maura was wearing. If he is telling the truth, and I can't see why he would lie about it, then atleast someone has seen that video. Or atleast still photos. How else would they know want kind of shoes she had on? As far as the ATM video. I thought it was stated it was a drive up type and there wasn't much information to be gotten other then the time and that she was alone when it happened.

I think the evidence strongly suggests that it was Maura in NH. What reason would it not be Maura? Someone harmed her at Umass? If so, then it would have to be a woman about the same age, looked like Maura and confident enough to drive her car all the way to NH appearently drinking while doing so. If you assume that it was an accident in NH, then what was the plan if the car accident never happened? Drive it where and for what reason? That person would also have to know that Maura was planning a trip to that general area because of the computer searches (done by Maura on her computer) right after she talked with her father Sunday night. (Looking for places to stay) And the accident forms found in the car that someone had to get on Monday. If she was harmed at Umass, it is very unlikely that a killer is going to drive the victim's car a long distance and fill the tank was gas. Quite possibly being seen on camera and or a million other reasons for being caught with someone else's car. It would be logical just to leave the car in a parking lot or bus station. I also think it is unlikely that after doing harm to Maura they are going anywhere near her dorm room and pack her things up. Assuming that they did, then they would also have to leave the old email about Billy's infidelity. How would they know to do that? I could believe that maybe someone harmed Maura some where after leaving Umass and the car accident in NH if it wasn't for the description by Butch Atwood. If a man where driving the car that night it would swing me to the hypothesis of Something happening to her at Umass.

I am positive she is not the only person in that video in some form or fashion. even if its something as small as a shadow. that would be the only reason i can think of that they'd hold back the tape and only show fred stills of it. it could compromise the investigation if they're at a certain point with it and don't want anything whatsoever to be leaked, no matter how small.

    1. Actually I seem to recall the police said positively that there was no one with her in the ATM video. I think that was discussed in the MM podcast.

    2. I agree, there has to be more to that video. If so, had to be someone from MA. Police said public viewing it would compromise the investigation. Twelve years later what more could they hide that they haven't already? I say it's time to risk it and take a chance to blow the case wide open.

    3. I too am frustrated by the video not being released, but this is one of those times where I agree with police. They have to be able to hold some things back in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation. If they are holding it back, I would think it's because it's integral to the investigation.

Is the family supposed to wait another twelve? i say show the evidence you do have and let the chips fall where they may! I still can't get over her sister stating that even if the disappearance was do to a family member, etc. I wonder what she meant by that1

    1. Tony, I have reason to believe that this rumor is false. I think I know who started it and that person is unreliable. More importantly, I looked for the driveway in question where that person and one other person told me it was located. I checked not only the road that they specified, but other ones nearby as well. Not only are there not many paved driveways on any of these roads, but many of the roads themselves are not paved. In any case, there was no driveway that matched the description given to me.

    2. Anonymous @ 12:04 thank you for clearing that up. It creeped me out big time thinking she could be buried in someone's driveway and that the person or persons involved are related to the DA. Thank you!

And are they serious when they say they don't how she left the scene

Because those two things dog me the most. All prior events are moot to me.

  11. In addition to the likely falsehood or deception about by Sara and Kate about the party and the likely falsehood or deception by Fred in his statement to UMASS police about the $4,000 (and there are lots of puzzling elements about those stories for sure), there is the likely falsehood or deception by Fred - also in his statement to UMASS police - about picking up Kate in a student lot. This almost certainly did not happen and is a very fishy story, as attested to by two officials from UMASS parking services. This with regard to the physical layout of the campus. It simply defies common sense. So, why did he make that up? What good did it do him to say that he was in a student lot when - almost certainly - he was not? How does that fit in with the falsehood or deception about the $4k and the falsehood or deception about the party?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Please explain to me what difference does it make where they picked up Kate? I think the phone records show that Maura calls Kate or vise versa before they pick her up. Logically, I assume that they talk about where to pick her up at. If it was at a parking lot or at the dorm, so what. They both admit to going to the restaurant. I don't think that proves that they aren't telling the truth. It is the totality of both their statements that don't add up logically that leads most people to believe they are being deceptive. The question is would anyone be questioning the events in Umass if they would have told a logical story at the beginning? Telling people it doesn't matter what happened before the accident in NH just makes people look harder at the events there. Obviously they know why she left and to them it doesn't matter. Maybe we could all get behind the idea that some dirt bag grabbed her if we know what they do.

    2. What was deceptive about the $4000?

    3. I don't understand how we can make an assumption that a person is lying based on a belief that their actions "defies common sense". That is 100% subjective.

  12. Did anyone else see Maura on Sunday at her job (Art Gallery) besides Sara?
Who was driving the Red Truck with Mass Plates in New Hampshire that had passed by Rhonda Orway while she was walking to the Stage Shop?
ATM video??? Why haven't the police released it? I have doubts if it was Maura on the video and if it was her at the WBC. By showing it, it would confirm that Maura was alive and well on Monday Feb.9 04.
Who was Maura calling at Domino's after her breakdown on Thursday Feb.5,04? She had called Domino's after they had closed..
Where was Kate, Sara, and Hoss on the day Maura disappeared? Where was Kate in the days after Maura disappeared?
Who was at the "Party" at Sara's dormroom? Was it really at Sara's dormroom or was it off campus? Billy said Maura had told him the Party was off campus. So who's lieing and why?
The last 48 hours of a person's life, could hold clues to what happened to them. And here in Maura's case, no one wants to talk about her last 48 hours and what was going on in her life previous to her disappearance. Nothing before the WBC accident matters. Why?

    1. everything you asked is exactly what I have wondered since becoming involved in this case. I think that the ATM video must hold a clue either its is Maura but an unidentified person or it was NOT Maura but they do not know who it is. or other clues that we the public are unaware of.

    1. I don't see anything suspicious about him taking out several grand from atm machines. This happened on a Saturday, when most banks are open for only a few hours, and many not at all. He wanted cash because you can negotiate a better price for a car when you're holding a stack of bills.

Why didn't Fred get the money from a teller during the week? Maybe he was too busy at work to go to the bank. Maybe he's a procrastinator. Maybe he didn't plan ahead very well. Who knows.

People also ask why it was so urgent to buy a car that weekend when her car ran fine. First of all, just because a car can go a hundred miles or two doesn't mean it's in great shape. And besides, maybe Fred is the kind of guy who believes in dealing with a problem before it's too late. Maybe he wanted to buy M another vehicle before her Saturn broke down on her on some country road by herself at night, because that can be a dangerous situation for a young lady.

      As we have seen, sadly.

I don't understand why the story of his trips to the atm machines is questioned so much, honestly. I probably would have done everything exactly the way he did in that situation.

    2. Going to 8 different ATM's to withdraw 4,000, Is a little bizarre IMO. Most ATM'S/banks have a daily withdraw limit.
Alot of banks are open until 6pm on Friday and 12 noon on Saturday.
Fred knew at least on Saturday that he was going to go and help Maura find a new car. Why not go inside the bank or write a check?
Most people would go inside the bank to withdraw that kind of money.

      Delete
    3. I do (apparently weird) stuff like that all the time. Usually I don't want to go inside the bank, I'm lazy and wait until the last minute to do things, and half the time I have misplaced my ID which makes it impossible to withdraw from a teller.
Also, not everybody will take a check especially if it's a private sale. Haven't you heard the saying, "cash talks"?

      Delete
    4. It's not bizarre if that's the only way you can get the money out, which it would be if the bank is closed. Maybe by the time Fred got on the road it was already after noon. Some people either don't know off the top of their head what time their bank closes on Saturday, or take longer than they expect to get out the door.

Evidently Fred did not reach the withdrawal limit on his debit card. Otherwise the atms would not have given him the money.

He might have been able to write a check at a car dealership, but not all dealerships accept personal checks anyway, and even the ones that do will not give you as good a price if you pay with a check because there's more of a risk for them to receive a check than to be paid in cash. If the check bounces they will have huge problems.

Furthermore, when you have cash you also have the option to buy a car from a private person. Not that it sounds like he was planning to do that, but he could have. You just have more options with cash, and no one selling his car through a newspaper ad or Craigslist would sign over the title and hand over the keys in exchange for a check from someone he doesn't know.

Does this answer your questions? These objections to Fred's story about his multiple trips to atm machines keep getting raised and I don't understand why.

      Delete
    5. Maybe in the old days car dealers wanted cash but present-day they want to have you take out a loan so you can pay the auto company principal and interest. Cash isn't king anymore in the auto dealer. My sister just bought a car paid for with cash and the dealer explained.

      Delete
    6. I think it's interesting that he got cash out of ATMs, however it isn't necessarily relevant. As some on here have said, some people will do this under certain circumstances. I do agree that cash is king and would allow them to buy a car from a private party.

Is there any question whether Fred got the money himself or if Maura might have borrowed or stolen his card and thus the ATM visits, with Fred covering for her?

    7. for those who don't find it bizarre...Then why doesn't Fred clear that up so we can get on with our day!

  16. I really wish a psychiatrist or therapist would try to explain to everyone what might have been happening in her head and explain WHY she was leaving in the first place. I think to try to 'profile' her would really help people understand what was going on with her. She was probably bulimic, surely an alcoholic, extremely private and likely acting out sexually. She broke the law at least twice (credit card and DUI in relation to the first accident) and was likely under extreme stress. I think all of these should paint a picture of her and could really put some theories about what happened to her to rest.

This, to me, is so important yet completely missing. There's constant discussion about Maura, but did anyone really know her? Nobody who comments here knew her, or at least doesn't admit to it. Yet we all theorize what she did and assume we have enough facts to decide what her actions would be. But the fact is, we don't know her at all. So how can we debate what happened if we really do not know her to know what decisions she made in those last moments between the accident and her disappearance - and beyond.

  17. The West Point angle; we now know there was a string of sexual assaults occurring at the time so I believe the missing key is in West Point. Someone Maura knew may have been a victim of sexual assault and suddenly disappeared. We need to track down staff who were working there when Maura was a student because that bystanders guilt may have been enough to terrorize her.....

  19. I was just reading a online story entitled "And then she was gone" about Maura by Christpher Peak. He references the "party" and states that both Maura and Kate where walked out by an unknown male. I have heard this many years ago and have since thought of it as rumor. If this is true, then who is this person and what do they have to say? It is then stated that the Hadley police gets a call from the Umass campus police letting them know about Maura crashing her fathers car. This is the first time I have ever heard that. If true, then who ever it was that made that call might have info on that accident.
I think there is still a lot of speculation in this case that can be put to rest.
    Maura's breakdown on Thursday;
Who was the person(s) who told Karen Mayotte about Maura?
Any one who checked into the dorm building that night who maybe able to place Maura at the desk during the Vasi hit and run. And for that matter, have info about what and when Maura first got upset. There had to more then a few people and surely someone had to have had asked her what was wrong.
As stated by someone else above, was she really calling Domino's pizza early that morning or was it someone working there?
    The "party";
(obviously both Kate and Sara could easily tell what happened. But realistically who would believe them at this point enless it leads to someone new.)
    Maura crashing Fred's car;
Who ever called the police that night must have atleast talked with her.
The hotel clerk at Fred's hotel.
    The day Maura disappeared;
Where was Maura all day Monday?
I have a hard time believing that Maura didn't talk with Kate about her plans.
Who was the person who stated that they saw Maura leave the dorm Monday afternoon?
    Maura's accident in NH;
Where is Susan Champy? Is she still alive and willing to tell her story?
    Who else do I think we need to hear from;
Any of the original Pi's that worked the case.
Any of the people who searched for her in the weeks after the accident and their perspective.

Maybe I am just tired of speculation but want to see a logical anaylsis with the timeline of events meshed with all of the information that has proven to be true. That would include the phone records, people's statements and all of things that James has uncovered. Maybe besides getting a fresh look at this case, we can atleast rule things out and by doing so come up with so new questions.

    - What information was on Maura’s computer and what did it reveal about her relationships, activities, and state of mind?

    - What was the source of the Londonderry ping?

-Who (if anyone) did she know at Dominoes?

    - Who were the people at other parties (not just the infamous standing-room only party) Maura had attended previously? Could any of these have become a love interest? Where are they living now?

-If Maura was meeting someone we don't know about, how would she first have made contact with them? Could it be through the gallery or her internships?

-Why did Kate say she told Fred the real story and why did Fred allegedly ask Maura’s friends not to talk?

-Has anyone at Maura’s internships been interviewed? What would they say about Maura (ie. had she seemed stressed or depressed and how was she coping with the work?)

    - Has Maura ever used drugs? If so where did she get them?

    - Was Maura wearing any jewelry when she disappeared that could be traced back to her (like a favorite necklace)?

    - Where was Maura heading and why (obvs question)? Was she meeting someone?

    - More about Maura's relationship with Hoss?

    - Was it truly Maura in the car?

    - Was Maura running away because she was scared of someone or something? Who or what?

    - Had Maura ever been suicidal?

  26. Did anyone ever think that call, that made her NUMB, was to/from a sex clinic?? We know Maura was promiscuous, with regular fellas. A closeted party girl. Is this what her friends absolutely cannot reveal?

She... Maura... found out she was HIV positive.

Maura was numb. No one died... but did she think, she was dying.. in a sense, because of the HIV diagnosis.

Here in Canada, you can go to an anonymous clinic, and then find out your results over the phone.

I really don't think she was pregnant. This was something beyond, she couldn't handle. And hence, the full pack up, giving the scrubs back, sending the email saying there was a DEATH, in the family. We all know, there was no death... but subconsciously, the DYING was her!!!?

I know of someone who got HIV in the late 90s. They went off the handles.. went missing for periods of time, drinking, drugs... contemplated suicide etc. They came around, but unfortunately, he is no longer on this earth today.

When you asked the men, who Maura had the orgy with, in the pool.. did you ask, if they used condoms? Though she would of found out after of an HIV diagnosis.

Bet my life, it wasn't the first time, she was living the college life, and the EXTRA curricular activities, college has to offer, for a young curious gal.

Ever look into the campus doctor/nurse clinic? Or off site clinics?

Ok. I will probably feel the wrath of this one. But this has been on my mind for a year.

I could be mistaken--maybe some healthcare professionals could weigh in on this--but I don't think they would give such results over the phone in the US for liability reasons.

    2. If that were the case, why would she say, "My sister"? Incidentally, your theory seems to be one of many on this site that seem to just be the result of letting your imagination run wild with scenarios. There is not a single shred of evidence to indicate that Maura was HIV positive. If you have a theory it needs to be connected to evidence, otherwise it just serves to muddy the waters and waste people's time reading it.

    3. Depends on the state. When I lived in California, you can go to an Anon Clinc. They give you a reference number, and you call in for your results over the phone. F you had something, they would suggest a follow up test.

This happened in many states, I'm pretty sure. It was to make things easier for those wanting to get tested for HIV & STD's. Many are afraid to be seen, walking in/out of a sex clinic.

It is something to keep a open mind about. STD's in college are rampant. As common as flu.

  27. I never really see anyone discussing that she was kidnapped and still being held somewhere to this day. It's not so far-fetched. Look at the girls in Cleveland held for 10 years within two blocks from their houses, or Jaycee Dugard held in a backyard tent for 18 years. Could someone have found her that night and taken her, and she is in basement or cellar someplace? I would look closer at that creepy guy in the video on youtube. Did the police actually search his house?

    1. What probable cause would the police have to search his house? Making creepy videos is not probable cause. Of course she could have been taken and is still being held somewhere. crashed her car, started walking down this dark road at night, dazed and slightly drunk, wandered too far into the vehicle lane, and was hit by a car?

Then the person driving the car panicked, grabbed her body, and took it with them? Since they are completely unrelated to her life, no one could possibly know what happened unless they came forward...

    1. I hadn't thought of that, but I don't think it sounds very likely. Why don't you email this theory to the Missing Maura Murray podcast and see if they'll discuss it? It's a lot more plausible than these Hollywoodesque disappearance theories.

    2. Same person here as Oct 10, 7:29 AM.

Sorry, I made a mistake in my post. I meant to say that theory *does* sound likely. I don't know how I got that backwards. But you see the in the last sentence I said it sounds plausible. That's what I really meant to say.

    3. Haha. No probably. I figured it out. I did send it to the podcast but haven't heard anything. I'm sure they get all kinds of stuff so who knows?

  29. Far from a lead but ~ I always wondered what could be gleaned of the purported comment made by FM to BR shortly after the unsuccessful NH search... (Not verbatim but) FM told BR, he (BR) could go-on-with-his-life now. ...Smells like a pretty COLD & FINAL thing to say only days into the investigation. Fairly certain that was disclosed yrs ago in a post on this site.
    Anyone else recall?

    1. Yep. Fred told Billy to bugger off, and get on with his life.
I would love to know more about the relationship between Fred and Billy.

Is it possible that Billy slept with Kate... and this was the snowball effect. Fred knew this, and told Billy his 2cents.

      Who knows.

But why no family search in years now...

  30. Does anyone know the exact brand and style number of the little black bag Maura carried? I'd like to know what it looked like. Product photo or link???

  31. Could she be in witness protection due to something she heard or saw and that's why the police are mum?

  32. Does Fred know about the Umass cabin??

If so.. why hasn't he searched there. With his old team of searchers.

Family has pretty much moved on with their lives, as it seems.

Man... if it was child, or even my friend, I would still be out looking every weekend I have off.

The closure from the family and "friends" really disturbs me.
